Human connection and relationship are very important in people’s lives. As psychologically proven in researches, people are social animals and they need to socialize. Being connected sometimes can give one a meaning of life and define it. In Barton’s short story, “Short Days, Dog Days” the main character Miller is very distant from his own family, neighbors, and others. When he says “The way I see it, we ain’t got nothing but short days now (89).” Miller refers to how mortal people are and how meaningless their lives are. His ideas are based on the actions and relationships of Miller having with his wife, daughter, dogs, and others, which are not healthy. However, readers would very much disagree with those ideas. People find meanings as they …show more content…
Miller apparently does not appreciate his daughter Margaret being a lesbian. When he describes her outlook as her hair “looked like she’d just got it cut at a men’s barbershop by a drunk barber” (92), he demonstrates his indifference or negativity toward her choice. If he unquestionably loves her, he would love her as who she is, regardless of how she looks or what she believes. Plus, he does not really communicate well with her about what he expects and or wants of her. If he would try to have a real talk with her, it would affect her feel connected with him emotionally and want to relate to each other. Miller would become as intimate as possible to his daughter like Margaret used to think her dad was the greatest man in the world when she was a kid. Margaret changes her perception of the man during adolescence after being seen by mother as the same woman while her parents were getting worse. This could be the one of reasons, if she has become a lesbian. Especially since adolescence is still growing, parents care and their behavior is the most important to their children. It is because children see, hear and learn from their parents. However, Margaret was not nourished enough from her mom and dad because her parents were not in a good relationship and family conversations were cut off. Therefore, the inter-family gap got worse between
However, the most compelling item in Miller’s early section is the note left in Harris’s diary. It says that there was nothing that could have done to thwart what was to happen. Also, it was observed that their parents were not at fault for their actions – they had been raised fine. The administration did what they could, and it would seem unreasonable to place laws on PVC pipes for they were a “select case” and “don’t think [that] this will happen again (Miller 422).” Their actions are according to Miller, are without motive or meaning. Moreover, along the way, they became lost in the struggle, like McCandless, in finding their way to mortality while being misguided (Miller 422). This misguidedness was because of the type of culture we live in – the world of reality shows, video games, constant media attention on the bizarre behaviors of others, and all other
The Millers appear to be permissive parents; therefore, the Millers seem to support Kevin in his behavior and his maladaptive ways of coping. Permissive parents are high on warm; subsequently, they are low in setting demands, rules, and guidelines. Kevin is obliviously gifted and talented, and
“I believe that the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were” ( Tragedy and the Common Man). Arthur Miller follows his Millerian conventions of tragedy in the writing of The Crucible. Often literature uses tragedy to display a depressing theme represented by the tragic hero.
word alone. Miller shows how judgement affects us and how quick we are to jump to it
In the end, Miller did a fine job getting his argument across and keeping his audiences attention throughout his essay but his lack of emotional appeal and his usage of fallacies made his paper weak. Miller made his paper stronger by including similes and using a fast-paced tone without confusing terms or boring wording. Finally, I believe that Miller could have included emotions to make his paper perfect but without it he only used sentence structure, a fast-paced tone and appropriate terms for his audience to make his paper intriguing.
Miller’s life paralleled The Crucible in many ways. The characters in the play had many traits that resembled his. He and the people of Salem were censored by the frenzy of the times they were living in. The hysteria and the mob mentality exacerbated the anticommunists’ and the witch-hunters’ philosophies. The Red Scare affected Miller in the same way the witch hunts affected the people of Salem. As long as there are people with authority in the world, there will be challengers of authority. Censorship will always be used to make others conform. A majority of the public is and always will be easily influenced by hysteria and the mob mentality. Miller used his own experiences to write The Crucible, a play that describes universal behavior and the human condition.
She indirectly causes the dysfunction in the family because Biff and Happy see their father as someone that should be successful, but he only has dreams that he’ll never reach, and Linda just helps him along. Miller is trying to tell us that we should not enable people to be someone they’re not, and that we should tell them like it is. If we don’t, then dysfunction will happen. So, if you ever see someone enabling someone else, try to stop it. They might be trying to be nice but they’re just hurting the person they’re enabling, because everyone should be living in

Factors that can fuel loneliness are abundant: depression, trauma, social rejection, loss, low self-esteem, etc. The aspect of human connection and interaction is a psychological requirement for all people, even to those who push others away. These elements of isolation are presented through three methods in a 1938 novel of friendship. John Steinbeck uses indirect characterization, discrimination, and conflict to demonstrate the effects of loneliness and need for companionship in his novel Of Mice and Men.
Arthur Miller states in his essay, "Tragedy and the Common Man," " . . . we are often held to be below tragedy--or tragedy below us . . . (tragedy is) fit only for the highly placed . . . and where this admission is not made in so many words it is most often implied." However, Miller believes " . . . the common man is as apt a subject for tragedy in its highest sense as kings were" (1021). It is this belief that causes Miller to use a common man, Willie Loman, as the subject of his tragedy, Death of a Salesman. Miller redefines the tragic hero to fit a more modern age, and the product of this redefinition is Willie.
to terms with what was really true of the gap between herself and her mother:
Writers may use literature as a vehicle of social criticism. In which ways does Arthur Miller criticize society?
Florio, Thomas A., ed. “Miller’s Tales.” The New Yorker. 70 (1994): 35-36. Martin, Robert A., ed., pp.
Arthur Miller was a good man, and with a good man comes character strengths. He always put forth the effort to judge a man by his rightful position and his fair play. He also attempted to judge a man by his moral sanity and his welfare of the community (Foner and Garraty, 1). Miller never judged someone based upon a first impression. He made great attempts to know people thoroughly before finally judging them. This was one of the greater strengths he posses in life. This helped him build the reputation that stuck with him over the years and that he became known for.
Throughout this powerful novel, we observe the injustice in societal rejection and the pain caused by this. However, another extremely dominating theme involving the need for friendship surfaces again and again in all of the prominent characters. The Creature's isolation reveals the effects that loneliness can have when it is the strongest feeling in one's life. Taken as a whole, while the ability to care for oneself is important, people will always need someone to be there when the road gets rough.
