What does it mean to be courageous? The dictionary definition of courage is “The quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, etc., without fear; bravery”. The dictionary says to enable the mind to face a danger, for example, a 21-year old named Tommy had just came out of a burning building and he realizes his 10-year old sister is still inside. Tommy doesn’t wait for firemen to come, he gets the courage himself to save his sister even though he can get hurt or killed. This story talks about an act of courage the character gets and saves his sister’s life by putting himself at risk. To be courageous means to stand up for your friends or to stand up for yourself.

Courage is when you know you’re beaten. The character Atticus, for instance, who was a seasoned lawyer acted courageous defending Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson was a black man who was accused of raping a white girl. Atticus was appointed to defend him. Jem was happy because he thought his father had won the case but Reverend Sykes loathed telling Jem “Now don’t you be so confident, Mr. Jem, I ain’t ever seen any jury decide in favor of a colored man over a white man…”(Lee 208). Atticus was sure he wasn’t going to win the case, nevertheless he gave it a try. That didn’t stop Atticus from trying to defend his client Tom Robinson. Another part in the novel when Atticus was courageous was when he shot at the man street dog. Heck Tate the Maycomb Sheriff was not as courageous as Atticus so he handed Atticus the air rifles and with one shot Atticus took down the street dog. Miss Maudie says “I saw that, One Shot Finch” (Lee 97). Atticus was referred to as one-shot finch because of his shooting skills. The other incidence in the novel when Atticus portrays courage was when he was not scared when Bob Ewell threatened him. Bob Ewell was the man who accused Atticus’ defendant Tom Robinson of raping his daughter Mayella. Atticus thought Bob Ewell threatened him as some sort of revenge, but unfortunately Atticus was wrong because when Bob Ewell said ...
To be courageous you cannot be deterred by possible outcomes that may involve danger or pain. To be courageous you have to be more than brave you have to be undaunted and have a heart of a lion. Through Harper Lee’s novel To Kill a Mockingbird courage and determination are embedded through the character’s actions. Atticus Finch, a lawyer in Maycomb County, explains to his son Jem, “I wanted him to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and see if through no matter what.(Lee 149)” Through this quote Harper Lee is trying to convey that, real courage is more than appearance it is a significant action
Courage is a action that you do when you are overcoming obstacles or fears. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, by Mildred Taylor there is a very courageous girl named Cassie Logan. She stands up for her family no matter what obstacles she faces. She stands up for what she thinks is right. Cassie proves her courage by standing up at the Barnett store, standing up for Little Man, and standing up to Lillian Jean. Cassie Logan stands up for what she believes in. She is very strong because she is so opinionated. She stands up for her rights about being black. She is very fearless. She knows that what is happening is wrong, and she knows that she will do anything in her power to try to make a difference.
What is courage? Ernest Hemingway, an American author, defines courage as “grace under pressure.” “The Leap” by Louise Erdrich is a story narrated by the daughter of one of its characters, Anna Avalon, a former trapeze artist. Anna displays many acts of what I’d call courage in this story as her daughter claims that her mother has saved her life at least three times. In this story we get to see how her mother saved her life multiple times and just how calm and collected she is. Anna Avalon fits under Ernest Hemingway’s definition of courage.
Courage is the thing which can be found in a child to an old man. It needs a lot of courage to take out courage from the heart. It is like a brain. It depends on the person, how and when he uses it. This tiny word has the power to convey the whole gesture of a person. According to Harper Lee?s genius ?To Kill a Mockingbird?, Courage is when you know you are licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through it through no matter what.
In the literary work, Speaking of Courage, Tim O’Brien highlights the trying struggle of a post-war solider attempting desperately to integrate himself back into American society. Paul Berlin’s trials and tribulations exemplify the “dominance of a citizen culture in the United States,” as mentioned by Dr. Decker in class. American society does not allow for the soldiers we have sent off to fight to return as warriors.
“Courage - a perfect sensibility of the measure of danger, and a mental willingness to endure it.” Courageous people understand the danger that they face when they act how they do. That is what courage is all about. Many historical events occur due to people having the courage to do what they think is right, or because of those who use their courage to do what they want. Having the courage to stand alone in one’s beliefs may be one of the hardest thing a person can do.
Courage is when you keep on pushing, and pushing, until you get to the next level and don’t let anyone get in your way ,no matter what happens. In the book Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry By:Mildred D. Taylor, there is a sassy young girl named Cassie Logan. She is always sassy and she stands up for what she believes in and never lets anyone let her down. Cassie shows courage when she stood up to the Simm’s, when it was the first day of school for Little man, and when Cassie helped T.J. whenever he was hurt very badly. Cassie’s actions show that she isn’t afraid to stand up for her beliefs and her actions also show that she is very brave and wont let anyone stand in her way.
The dictionary definition of courage is bravery or boldness. In the set texts of Little Women and Treasure Island, courage is defined through the interaction of the characters, the situation and their reactions to it. Thus, there are different aspects of courage explored throughout the texts resulting in either in physical or psychological pain or a mixture to the characters.
To be courageous, it doesn't mean you have to save a city, or fight against an evil villain (although being courageous). To be courageous, all you have to do is be brave and express yourself. In the book "Jasper Jones", Charlie shows courage by doing just that! The book “Jasper Jones”, written by Craig Silvey that has been awarded the Michael Printz Award, starts off with the main character, Charlie, who soon to his un knowing, is being called upon by someone knocking on his window. He looked over and saw him… Jasper Jones. Jasper was considered by the town as a hooligan, a good for nothing, a criminal. But, Jasper needed his help. Charlie, then, goes with Jasper and starts what would be an adventure of twists and turns, truth and
What is bravery to you? How would you define it? How would you describe your own bravery? This word can be talked about and shown in many different ways. Bravery can be when you go out of your way to do something good for someone or to help them in any way. Being brave can be nothing like being fearless. Some may understand that bravery is being terrified to do something but doing it anyway. You could be scared. This could put yourself or your life in danger. You may have to have some courage and support to do this. Being brave is showing you're willing to go above and beyond for something. You never know when your going to have to step out of your comfort zone and sacrifice something in order to be brave.
People are dying. Right next to you men and women being blown to pieces and shot. This is something that little of us have experienced, but the men a women who have have a tremendous amount of courage. Courage is one of the most important characteristics a person can have. Without courage we as humans would not be advanced as we are now. If the writ brothers did not have the courage to invent the firsts plane and fly dangerously high above the ground we would not have the ability to get to foreign countries without weeks of travel. Doing something that scares you is hard, there's no doubt about it, but if you can power through your fears possibilities are endless.
I used to believe that acts of courage were only demonstrated by heros; firefighters, police, men and women in the military. Almost 3 years ago, my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. One minute life is normal, the next, your whole world is turned upside down. A question that lingered in my mind was, what makes an ordinary person courageous? After facing a life changing event, I learned that courage cannot be measured by the scale of its significance. Courage is often compressed into a single definition, but there isn't truly one individual annotation of the complex word. What makes courage so elaborate, is it’s different meaning to everyone. To someone, courage may be getting out of bed in the morning. While for others, it's public speaking, or skydiving. Courage can be defined merely by a person’s thoughts on the matter, since a definition for the word does not necessarily exist. However, courage is not limited to just actions; Courage is also finding strength in a difficult time. Fear is an aspect that is found in almost every example of courage. Stepping past a fear, and facing an unknown
