Geography is the study of Earth and how people used the resources. We study geography to understand what goes on in the environments around us. Geography is always in our lives, even when we do not realize is. Geographers study geography all the time and see why people put things where they are. There are 5 themes of geography; location, place, region, movement, and human/environment interaction.
As Americans we live in isolation, surrounded by advertisements, electronic screens, fast food, the internet, etc. We live these lives while thousands scream out in hunger and thirst begging to nourish their families. Living lives in excess, often unknowingly supporting a system that is not sustainable, breeds capitalism, and unplugs us from the rest of the world. Having been raised in a typical suburban home my ideas of culture were going to Olive Garden or walking by Riverside in Minneapolis. However, Geography 111 has challenged what I believed, truly allowing me to grasp that I am not part of solution I am problem that spreads neocolonialism, capitalism, and western culture wherever a profit can be made. Allowing me fantastic experiences that aided in personal development. One such experience occurred after grade 10, and it ignited the travel bug inside me. I went on a one month exchange to france where i got to not only improve my language skills but I made some incredible friends and got to see an entirely different part of the world. My family lived in Aix-en-Provence in southern france so while i didn't get to see any castles I did get to go scuba diving for the first time. During my stay the family also took me for a week to Corsica and another week in italy. This experience was not only incredible for sightseeing but also i learnt a ton about a new culture and gained a sense of independance after being away from home for the first time and surviving a month an entire ocean away from my mom. I would have never had this experience and I certainly would not have adapted so well into their home had i not taken 9 years of french

There is nothing quite like traveling, going someplace new and finding out more about the world and yourself. Anyone can become a traveler it just takes a little bit of faith and courage. Traveling across the world or even across the country is a learning experience. When you are a traveler you see how people live and how different cultures work. I am very lucky that I am able to be a traveler and see this
