There are many things to be thankful for: your food, the roof over your head, the fact that compared to most, you live an amazing life. Everyone is thankful for those things, it would be odd if you weren’t. I decided to write about something that surpasses the prior things with flying colors- people who inspire you. The essay is about Malala Yousafzai, my brother Thomas, and Cousin Debbie. All three of those people mean something to me. I am incredibly thankful for each and every one of them. I am inspired everyday to push forward, even if I feel like giving up. One person that I am thankful for is Malala Yousafzai. She is a girl from Pakistan who has surpassed many hurdles in order to become a female activist for girls rights. She doesn’t …show more content…
One person that I am truly thankful for is Thomas, my eldest brother. Although we don’t get along every day of the week, I wouldn’t know what to do without him. He set the bar for many things in my life, such as my academics, my sports, and my overall successfulness. One day, I was in the third grade, I came home crying- sobbing- an overall mess because I convinced myself I was failing to meet Thomas work ethic. My parents assured me I was fine and that I was just as smart, but ever since I always strived to be equal if not greater. He may not realize he does this, but he is the reason I am who I am. Even when I was having trouble with old friends he stood up for me and made it clear I was his kid sister and was not a force to be reckoned with. Thomas has made me strive to be great and has given me a sense of integrity. I have a feeling I’ll do great things, and I owe that all to …show more content…
She is my father's cousin, but she is more than that to me. I am very thankful for my immediate family, but Debbies special. Although she is not my grandma or my aunt, She has somehow managed to find a nestle in my heart that is closer than most. Debbie is the definition of kick butt. She wears the leather, she acquires a great sense of style, red hair, and a very, very witty sense of humor. She has a I’ll-kick-your-butt-but-then-make-you-laugh attitude. If I had to spend an hour talking to someone about something, it would most likely be her. One day we decided to go get our nails done at a local salon, and she couldn’t stop cracking jokes. Trying not to laugh, but miserably failing is the only thing I remember feeling. I feel that when I am old, wrinkly, and sitting in a wheelchair, she is one person I will definitely remember. Every morning that she has slept over the previous night I can always find her sitting on the porch doing her crossword puzzle and drinking coffee. I’m not the only one who has this feeling either. She cracks both my brothers up more than anyone, my parents love her company, and my dogs would rather her pet them than any of the Knobels. Everyone is thankful for Debbie, it's impossible not
...er family and all of her loved ones that she had what it takes to be put to the test and pass it. Even though her journey was not smooth, Gabby managed to push through. Gabby Douglas is an inspiration to me and many others because of all of her wonderful achievements and fantastic ability to shine even when it is dark.
My mother and father where great role models in my life and I’m very grateful to have them as parents. Life is so great with them that I really don’t want to leave and I know they don’t want me to leave either. They have treated me so well and I can’t thank them enough for how I turned out as a person. I am grateful for how my dad pushed me so hard to be a nice and kind person. Elders really appreciate well-mannered men and woman. I wan to thank my mom for everything she has done for me as a child. I really appreciate all the love she has given me and how supportive she
The Five Elements of a story and novel are the theme, the plot, the setting, characters, and conflict. However, each element should rely and emphasize each other throughout the story. A prime example of this is found in the short story, “Thank You, Ma'am.” The story was written in 1958 by Langston Hughes. It is about a poor boy named Roger, who tries to steal a woman's purse. The woman, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones, responds, however, in a very unexpected way. Mrs. Jones takes Roger, who tried to steal from her, to her house and shows him kindness. So the first theme of “Thank You, Ma'am” is 'be kind to everyone, even if they don't deserve it.' But, then, Mrs. Jones later reveals to him that she, too, used to be just like Roger, and that she used to steal and do worse things than that. Thus, the second theme is 'you can always work past and issue and
Heroes are needed in every aspect of our lives. If we didn’t heroes rights, our outlook on life would not be the same. Now days, parents tell their kids to dream as big as they can and just believe that one day their dreams will come true. If we did not have heroes who had achieved their dreams, those kids would not be motivated to achieve theirs. Just like Shannon Faulkner had the courage to reverse the odds and enter an all male Citadel, many young girls will have the courage to do the same.
Thanksgiving is undoubtedly a holiday to celebrate family. It also celebrates many other things, as the name suggests. Thanksgiving is a holiday to give thanks for the things that a person has rather than to wish for more things. Accomplishments and shiny cars are not part of the essence of Thanksgiving, as these do not have the inherent humbleness expected of the holiday. This air of humility and frugality, harkening back to the days of the pilgrims and Native Americans, is probably what lead Ellen Goodman to describe the holiday as a suppressing of individualism. However, the rift between individuality and family that Goodman describes in Thanksgiving is not as deep as she makes it seem, and Thanksgiving Day is hardly the only day of the
In the short story Thank You Ma'am by Langston Hughes, the main character Mrs. Jones is kind. In the story a young boy named Roger tries to steal from her. She catches him, confronts him, realizes that he is poor and has no family and immediately takes him in. She cares for him, teaches him right from wrong and feeds him. She gets him back on his feet with what she could give and sends him off back into the real world. Mrs. Jones is kind because she teaches Roger a lesson, she helps him, and she wants a good future for him.
My father has been a great influence in my life. The reason why my dad has influenced me is because he was able to raise me. My dad raised my two brothers and me by himself because my mother passed away. The day when my mother passed away was hardest time for us all. My brother and I were in waiting room with a friend of my Dad’s. My Dad came out of my mother’s room with worried face. My Dad told us that mother was not feeling well, so we
There are people who look up to someone for what they accomplished or attempted to accomplish in life. Everyone has to know of a person who they admire for their dedication to something. An inspiring person is someone who does something that a person likes to know they did and would like to know more about that one person. They would want to follow their similar steps to achieve some of their own goals. My inspiration is Martin Luther King that accomplished to do a lot of his community. He was a person that spent his years fighting for equal rights of his people. He had an ability to speak up for what right and did not give up easily. No one else had so much voice like King to convince a number of people to march alongside him even though they were at risk for getting seriously injured (Wilmonth p.336.).Although most readers of law had argued that it is unfair for discrimination to continue and there should be something done about it, examination shows that Martin Luther King Jr. uses his eloquent words and his power of persuasion to prove to people no longer have to deal with the injustice in this environment. Martin Luther King Jr. is a result of the combination of bravery, motivator, and selflessness.
The first person I want to talk about is Malala Yousafzai. Malala stood up for girls to have education. Since she has been standing up for her cause, she has been conquering obstacles along the way. For example, the Taliban had shut down her school
When Malala Yousafzai speaks the world listens. She couldn’t have reached such a position without the encouragement of her father, her remarkable intelligence and her ability to overcome obstacles. True success lies in the satisfaction of knowing you made the effort to become the best version of yourself( Wooden,34). Malala Yousafzai is the product of extreme circumstances, but it is her choice to speak out when others were silent that has made her who she is today. Her conviction to her mission to achieve universal education is what inspires me. She is truly a beacon of hope for our generation.
There are numerous heroes among us and for the most part those heroes are usually unknown to the world. These heroes just go about their day like everyone else except with one difference, they would put their lives on hold so they could help the less fortunate any way they can. Sacrifices must be made and most of the times these heroic acts go unrecognized and unheralded. Nevertheless, many of these heroes do not care and are not in it for the praise, in fact most of the time all they want to do is just help because they can. A good example of this is a woman who is one of the most beautiful women in the world. She has all the fame and fortune a person can dream of but instead of doing what most famous people do, she spends her free time in foreign countries helping to make refuges have a better life. This woman does not do the things she does, for praise and fame but instead, just wants to help out of the goodness in her heart. Even though she does not do what she does to get praise, people praise her anyways. She is one of the most influential figures in today’s society. Well-known humanitarian, Goodwill Ambassador, actress and devoted mother, Angelina Jolie stands out as a modern day hero.
I want to thank Jacob, for being my big brother. I also want to thank him for his funny jokes, his scary video games, him and I laughing until I’m about to pee myself, and making me a better student, and a superior version of myself. Jake as also changed me in ways I didn’t even know he could, and he is a true strong, admirable teenager. Jacob Evan Martin is my changemaker.
“Courage [is] not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it” (Nelson Mandela). Nelson Mandela was president of South Africa and fought to end apartheid for his people. Unfair child labor practices drove Mother Jones to work to enact laws that prevented the abuse of children in the mills. And Malala Yousafzai has created a movement to support girls’ education rights. Despite the fear and resistance they faced, these three individuals worked tirelessly for their causes. Mandela, Mother Jones, and Malala all had to persevere and overcome obstacles to enact change and achieve the human rights they promoted.
The kitchen is congested with cumin, pepper, and bitter leaf. If you start chuckling, singing, or communicating in any way you will choke because spice particles compose most of the air now. This is my living room three times a week when my mom doesn’t go to work the night before. It is how my family functions. My family has enkindled me to live my life immersed in culture. From helping my mom cook our dinner of Jollof rice to attending fundraisers until early dawn to build primary schools in the motherland. I am grateful for my family, because of them I have cultivated my early interest in culture, and now I will maintain that interest with me well after my secondary education years. Although I can say I have attained a substantial element from my family, they have limited me in my life for too long. Often because of preformed notions or ideals my parents had, they would not permit me to explore a passion I held. Additionally, at times I could only pursue an interest meagerly because of my obligation to watch my siblings or accompany them at their activities. My parents also expec...
