Pablo Escobar? Who is he what did he do and what did he stand for? On 1st December 1949, in Rionegro, Colombia, Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born into a middle-class family as the third of seven children and raised in the nearby city of Medellín. Pablo Escobar is speculated to have begun his criminal career as a teenager, allegedly stealing gravestones and sanding them down to resell them to local smugglers.
Escobar ultimately became involved in many illegal activities with a man named Oscar Benel Aguirre. The pair sold contraband, Stole cars, bought and sold fake lottery tickets and ran other petty street scams. In the early 1970s, before entering the drug trade, Escobar allegedly acting as a thief and bodyguard, earning supposedly $100,000 US dollars by kidnapping and holding a Medellín executive for ransom. …show more content…

Pablo saw the drug trade as untapped potential, there was very few competitors to face so he thought he could control the trade. Pablo decided to buy 14kg of cocaine paste in Peru, which he refined in a laboratory in a two-story house in Medellín. This is what is noted as the first step towards building his infamous empire. Pablo had already set up trade routes from his smuggling days so getting the narcotics to America was easy. When Pablo started, he smuggled the cocaine to America in old plane tires, and the pilot of the plane could earn as much as US $500,000 per flight. Pablo Escobar was successful in America because there was a demand for Narcotics. Once cocaine got to Miami it took off, creating an ever-increasing market for Escobar’s product.
