The major cause that led to the rebellion of the colonists is the increased taxation without getting proper representation from the British. Before the Revolutionary war broke, the British had faced a skyrocketing national debt, and King George III, in his wisdom thought that by increasing the taxes to the colonies, he would solve the national debts. One of the major acts that were passed was the Sugar Act of 1764. The Act imposed taxes on sugar and sugar products such as molasses among other products that were imported outside the British Empire into the colonies. However, there had been the passage of the Molasses Act in 1733, but it had not taken root for two reasons. During this period, the business of shipbuilding was taking root at the colonies, and the colonies had printed their paper currency. It led to some American colonies forming their fortunes, and the British felt that the American economy was getting out of the control of the Britain. The British canceled the colonial script and exchanged the money for a half with notes from the Bank of England. And as Franklin remarked, ‘In one year the conditions were so reversed that the era of prosperity ended, and a depression set in, to such an extent on the streets of the Colonies were filled with the unemployed’ (Middlekauff, 2007). It was this disillusionment that underlined the start of the revolutionary war. The Quartering Act was also passed, in which the American colonies were supposed to provide quarter services to British troops, which raised resentment levels as the soldiers were interpreted to represent British interests. The Stamp Act, which imposed taxes on all the legal documents in the colonies led to an outcry, with the Americans feeling that it was not fair to have such taxation without any representation.
