Reflection: In my short story I used a variety of techniques such as metaphors, similes, symbolism of the phone as a shield and protection from the ‘outside world’, as well as visual and sensory imagery, rhetorical questions, etc. This helped to bring my response together as using a variety of techniques allowed me to articulate my ideas easier and in a more descriptive way. The idea of my story was about a person who used to be the victim of cyber bullying, and is now seeking revenge by cyberbullying her classmates and eventually gets found out. I used visual and sensory imagery in my response through “I was once their victim, the target on which they threw their daggers, which crushed my soul.” This helped to shape the meaning of my story as it was a visual representation of how much pain the protagonist felt through the power of others’ words, rhetorical questions such as “was I really that untouchable?” and “but how did they know? Who knows?” helps to reinforce the purpose of my story as it makes the reader think about what the question is asking rather than just saying it. Symbolism is found in both my story and Robert Olen Butler’s short story, Salem. In my story the symbolism of an object is represented by the protagonist’s mobile phone which to her symbolises immortality and safety “I felt invincible, nothing could harm me behind the safety of my screen.” In Salem, symbolism is shown by using a cigarette packet, “We are to find ant objects that belong to dead American soldiers and bring them forth.can name its remaining unnamed dead” the cigarette packet in Salem helps to connect objects to people and characters to give the characters their sense of identity which is what influenced my writing as I use the story to demonstrate the protagonist’s online
