Some people may say that West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet are different, but that’s not true. West Side Story is an interpretation of Romeo and Juliet’s Balcony scene because they both talk about the sun, moon and the stars, in both someone like Maria's father and Juliet's nurse is constantly calling to them when they are on the balcony and finally the both confess their undying love to one another.
In Both Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story in the balcony scene, they both talk about the stars and how bright the world is. In West Side Story it says “ ….for here you are and what was a world is a star….the world is full of light with suns and moons….the world is wild and bright….shooting sparks into space….a world is a star….” This is

A line from Romeo and Juliet that Romeo happened to say was “By love, who first did prompt me to inquire” Also there is a line in West Side Story that also helps show this spoken by Tony that says “And there's nothing for me but Maria Every sight that I see is Maria” There is plenty more lines in each of theses pieces that both people confess how much they love each other. Both these couples did not know each other for very long so for both the plays to have a way where they both confess their love is suspicious. Also in both these scenes the man who is Romeo and Tony in both plays they are the ones who approach the girls who are on the balcony. Some people might say that this point isn't very persuasive because, in many movies, plays and musicals love scenes that get shared all the time. That love scenes happen particularly early on in after the couples have met. But there's a catch. In both of the plays, they use the balcony. Romeo and Juliet is the famous play written by William Shakespeare, that is famous for its balcony scene. This play is the play that almost everyone knows because of how much the balcony scene is popular. West Side Story has a balcony scene that is so close to this that it can't be
Throughout the course of the play Romeo and Juliet and the novel Lord of the Flies, there is a common motif of light versus dark that affects the way characters grow and view the world. Contrasting sharply between the two written works is the usage of this idea. In Romeo and Juliet the light is treated as a problem that will bring their forbidden love to “light” whereas the darkness provides a covering for their rendezvous. In Lord of the Flies it is the opposite, with the darkness being representative of the boy’s hidden savagery as well as providing fear of the unknown while the fire, a symbol of light, provides safety in warmth and food as well as the ability to see through the dark.
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both tell a story of two lovers who can not be together because of a feud. The characters in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story are similar in their actions but are different in family background and their attitudes. Two characters that are similar, but different are Tybalt and Bernardo. The two characters had different attitudes and family backgrounds.Tybalt’s attitude was more daring, while Bernardo’s waited for the trouble to come to him first. Even though, Tybalt and Bernardo both come from different backgrounds, they have hatred toward the other side and the actions toward their enemies were the similar, which cost the lives of others and themselves.
In comparison, Romeo and Juliet story can be compared to West Side Story. For instance, the dance held in both stories is where the lovers met. The common trait between the love of Romeo & Juliet and Tony & Maria was it was forbidden. Both Romeo and Tony angered their friends because they neglected them for their lovers. Also, both Maria and Juliet completely disagree with their arranged marriages. However, the difference between these stories is only one lead to the death of both
The archetypal tragedy of two star-crossed lovers, separated by familial hate, is a recurring theme, which never fails to capture the minds of the audience. It is only at great cost, through the death of the central characters that these feuding families finally find peace. This is an intriguing idea, one antithetical. I have chosen to analyze both Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet and Laurent 's West Side Story. The purpose of this essay is showing how the spoken language is utilized in these different plays to meet differing objectives. The chosen scenes to further aid comparison and contrast are the balcony scenes.
Romeo and Juliet, (R&J), and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, (AMSND), are two different genres with but have the same basic plot: Two young lovers can’t wed and the girl is to marry another man who is preferred by her father, so the couple meets at night and plans to run away. Both couples have gone against the wishes of their authority figures but it doesn’t end well for Tybalt, Paris, Romeo, or Juliet. R&J is set in Elizabethan times, and the Chain of Being would have been disrupted by their actions.AMSND has fantastical elements that interfere with fate and these elements such as fairies and cupid, would have been understood to be higher on the chain than man by its attendees of the time. Is it the force of celestial bodies that makes R&J a tragedy and AMSND a comedy?
West Side Story is the story of two lovers from rival gangs who cannot be together. This musical was heavily inspired by William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The music was a combination of jazz, pop, and classical which was influenced by Aaron Copland, which was Leonard Bernstein's friend. This
The play West Side Story, by Arthur Laurents, is based upon the play Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Despite a few differences, both works, in essence, have the same plot. The source of violence in Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story is the ever-present hatred between families and between gangs, although, because of the "star-cross’d lovers" motif in Romeo and Juliet, the hatred plays a larger role in producing the ending of West Side Story than it does the ending of Romeo and Juliet.
The language used in these two scenes is quite different. In Romeo and Juliet the majority of the scene is of the two lovers confessing their undying love for each other using beautiful language and many metaphors. They also discuss marriage and serious commitments to each other. In Westside Story, this scene is spent singing to each other, which I find, makes it more romantic but has less tension. They also don’t seem as serious about commitment towards each other.
West Side Story: The musical West Side Story is based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This musical was possible due to the efforts of four people, Leonard Bernstein, the composer, Jerome Robbins, the director and choreographer, Arthur Laurents, the playwright, and Stephen Sondheim, the lyricist. After Rodgers and Hammerstein II’s Oklahoma! West Side Story is considered as the most significant musical. The theme of this musical was different than the contemporary comical musicals in the sense that the plot had a tragic ending.
Love is a beautiful thing, it always works out in the end. Everyone is always happy and no problems occur. West Side Story, a musical by Leonard Bornstein based on Shakespeare 's Romeo and Juliet parallels a love story of two star-crossed lovers. The play takes place in 1961 in New York City. This musical displays importance because it shows that nothing can overcome the power of love. This play is based on a love story between the main characters of Maria and Tony. Theses two are from different gangs that trouble to get along. They are from different gangs that do not get along at all. Roughly two hundred blocks make up Manhattan’s West Side, which stretches from Central Park West to the Hudson River. For the most part, the street youths
Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story share many similar themes. Romeo and Juliet both chronicle a story of overcoming prejudice and hatred, forbidden love, and defying stereotypes that nobody thought could be broken. The two stories are similar in a multitude of ways, even though their settings are centuries apart- Romeo and Juliet set in the 1500’s, and West Side Story set in the 1950’s. Romeo and Juliet and West Side Story both teach a lesson of how prejudice can teach you how to hate, and how one of your rivals may be the one who helps you remember how to love.
Romeo and Juliet is the play by William Shakespeare which is famous for its tragedy. The novel that is similar to the play is The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald. They are both similar in the way they ends; both protagonists die at the end. They are also similar in the way the plot leads characters to the death. Both literature pieces have several factors in the plot which leads characters to death. One of them is the action of others. The Baz Luhrmann (1996) version of the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene has a better representation of what romantic love is. The movie is set in modern time in a fictional place named Verona Beach. The actors who portrayed Romeo and Juliet are near the same age, where they both have similar experiences due to that. It is important in a relationship for both people to have similar experiences, so they can talk and relate to it. While, in Zeffirelli’s version of the balcony scene, Juliet was portrayed by a younger actress and it is evident that because she is younger, she lacks the experience that Romeo has. This is scene during the kissing scenes where Juliet in Zeffirelli's version did not know what to do, while in Luhrmann’s version Juliet knew what to do and how to react. It is
West Side Story came out in 1961 as a melodramatic musical that took place in New York. It takes the same theme as Shakespeare's, Romeo and Juliet, in that it is about two lovers whose relationship is not accepted by others because of conflicting backgrounds.
