There are a lot of topics that can be compared and contrasted. Whether it be animals, cities, novels, movies, etc. The topic that is being compared and contrasted is movies. The two movies are called The Dark Night, and Beowulf. These movies are considered two epics that have similarities and differences. Whether it be from the villains, the heroes, the landscape etc.
The Dark Night has many similarities compared to Beowulf. Both movies have a hero, which is Batman and Beowulf. For both heroes, community is important. They would protect the town, also they would make sure everybody is safe. The heroes fight someone or something that no one can fight. Batman fights the Joker because people are scared of him, and cannot deal with him, while Beowulf defeats Grendel because the people of the town cannot fight Grendel, because he is too strong for them.
The hero not only fought the villain, but also created another. In Beowulf, Beowulf was set out to kill Grendel’s mother. When Beowulf approaches Grendel’s mother, he becomes inattentive by her beauty. Beowulf had an intimate moment with Grendel’s mother, and gave her a child. In The Dark Night, the mob had killed Harvey’s wife, Rachel. Once Harvey found out about Rachel’s death, Harvey went out to kill those that were involved. Harvey flips a coin, burnt side the person

dies and the shiny side the person lives. The villains destroy anything in their path. There many differences between the movies.
The Dark Night is actor portrayed, while Beowulf is an animated film. There is a difference in how many villains each hero fights. Beowulf had fought multiple villains. First Beowulf began fighting Grendel. Once Grendel was killed, Beowulf sets out to assassinate Grendel’s mother. The last villain that Beowulf fought was the dragon. Even though the dragon was Beowulf’s son, the dragon created disasters throughout the town. On the other hand, Batman had one villain, which was the Joker. Then again, Batman had to take care of Harvey. Harvey was murdering innocent people, which did not deserve to get
hurt. Love can come into play as well. Batman tried to get the Joker to say where he put Harvey. Batman found out that Rachel was with him. Once Batman found out that Rachel was with Harvey, Batman demolished the Joker, and stormed out of the room. Batman loved Rachel since he was a kid, but Rachel sent Batman a letter telling him that she was going to marry Harvey. That letter made the decision on who Batman is going to save. Batman does not let love get in the way of duty. One the other hand, Beowulf let love get in the way of action. Beowulf was told to execute Grendel’s mother, he was stunned by her beauty. Grendel’s mother told Beowulf he would not have to execute her if he gave her a child. Not knowing what Beowulf was getting himself into, Beowulf gave her another child. Another difference is their pledge. Batman has a rule that he will not kill anyone. The Joker attacks Batman, hoping that Batman will break the rule. While Beowulf does not care who is in his path. For example; while running away from the dragon, Beowulf hoped off the horse. The horse fell down, as well as the guy behind Beowulf. Beowulf does not care about others around him as long as he kills the villain. In the movie, there are tokens that are presented. In The Dark Night, there is a coin that has two heads. Harvey held onto this coin. Once Harvey was saved by Batman, he suffered from critical burns. Harvey has burns on one side of his body, and also the coin had burned on one side. The token, in Beowulf, is the horn. The horn guided Beowulf through the tunnel. The horn brightened, giving Beowulf enough light to see, but once Beowulf heard a commotion, he threw it, hoping to attract Grendel’s mother near. The horn attracted her nearby. Beowulf gave Grendel’s mother a child. Once Beowulf returned to the kingdom, the king found out that Beowulf gave Grendel’s mother a child, and the king committed suicide. Beowulf is now pronounced king. The horn returned back to Beowulf, which then creates the villains action. The horn represents the king’s child. On main differences is the villain’s appearance. The villain in Beowulf was gruesome looking monster. On the other hand, the villain in The Dark Night is human. Also the settings were completely opposites of one another. The Dark Night takes place in Gotham city, which is a nickname for New York City. Beowulf takes place in Europe, dealing with the Normandy people, where it is bitter cold. Comparing and contrasting a movie, is hard at first, but the point is to think. There are many similarities and differences. Whether it be a dog and a cat, two movies, two cities, etc. The Dark Night and Beowulf, had many similarities and differences. Whether it would be from villains, heroes, actions, etc.
After reading the epic poem Beowulf and watching the movie The 13th Warrior, I find that the differences greatly outnumber the similarities. However, the theme of good versus evil reflects the values of the Anglo-Saxon people in both the poem and the movie. Numerous differences exist in the poem and the movie including the characters, the bloody battles, and the deaths of the heroes.
Since the beginning of time, fairy tales, stories and legends have shared a common theme where good and evil are played against each other. In the story of “Beowulf”, translated by, “Burton Raffel”, there is a hero who plays as a good character, and there is also a demon who rules the dark side. The hero Beowulf, agrees to take a journey to conquer the evil monster Grendel. But when Beowulf is trying to defeat the beast, Grendel fights back, causing integrity and generosity to vanish. The common theme in various tales like in Beowulf is, good vs. evil.
Evil" present in many of today's literature pieces, have more than likely been influenced by the epic poem Beowulf. The first of its kind, Beowulf exemplifies well-written literature that has made such a big impact on film, text, and general media. It has influenced many writers' styles, and has been the foundation for many films in the media. When we turn on the television, we often see movies or shows that showcase the theme of a godly hero, whose strength and highly profitable talents help him to defeat the villain. Heroes such as Batman, Spiderman, and Superman, all resemble Beowulf and can easily account for most of his character
Although there are many similarities, the few differences between Beowulf and Batman are quite evident. The epic hero Beowulf received rewards for his intrepidness and heroism. For example he received wealth and was later made king. He was primarily interested in glory, which eventually led to his death at the claws of the dragon. On the contrary, Batman’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne, already has wealth and power, even though this is not of great importance to him...
The two heroes both fight for good causes. They put their lives on the line to protect others. They are also brave and strong in mind and body. However, beyond their similarities Beowulf and Superman are extremely different.
Batman occurs in a time period and setting location different from Beowulf. Batman takes place in a city named Gotham city that resembles much of that in modern New York city. Gotham is a modern city congested with buildings and people. Beowulf setting is in Denmark during a more medieval period with a less number of people. Another Difference between both heroes is their personality. Batman is more of hypocritical man who cares for the good of the people. Batman also does not believe in killing people no matter the situation or the individual. Overall Batman is more of a modest man who does not care for fame neither does he care for money. Batman uses a mask so his face remains concealed and free from the public and his enemies. Beowulf is more of an arrogant character with lots of pride and unafraid to kill, he likes to show off and only fights battles that have rewards for him. Often the rewards being money and fame. Batman relies on knowledge, gadgets and his sidekick Robin unlike Beowulf who relies on strength and agility with little to no weapons and no combat partner. Comparing batman with Beowulf bring out a great differentiation between both, nevertheless still having similarities and being
To begin, we can examine the physical appearances of the two heroes. From the get go, we see Beowulf as a very powerful man. We see emphasise of this through the drawings of the novel. We see how muscular he is and the overall aura. He is relaxed and in control every step of the way.
Many people believe that Batman is the world’s greatest made up hero and detective, he only does things that will help the world. People loved the comics of Batman so much, they turned it into many serious of movies. Batman is a modern day hero, however back in the 7th century the poem Beowulf was the world’s greatest made up hero. Beowulf was originally an epic poem, then turned into a novel Beowulf a New Telling by Robert Nye. Beowulf was the first English Literature to be written, written around the 7th century. The original Beowulf is extremely hard to read so, long ago someone that new Old English decided to translate it so people could read it easily. The most popular translations is Beowulf a New Telling by Robert Nye. Beowulf is a story
...ash between good and evil. Beowulf is a representation of a Godly figure, possibly Christ, whereas his enemies represent figures of darkness, possibly Satan. Due to his battle with Grendel, Beowulf realises the true abilities of Gods power and develops into a more Saint like character who is more concerned with giving help rather than Gaining fame. He seeks Gods guidance, but looks to pagan ideals when he deems so. Although he never completely takes complete advantage of Gods power, he does earn the fame and glory that he fought bravely for.
In the famed epic, Beowulf, the author creates a vivid sketch of the struggle between light and darkness. He highlights these topics and metaphorically reveals light’s eventual victory in Beowulf’s battle with Grendel, in Beowulf’s first skirmish with Grendel’s mom, and with the imagery created at the beginning and end of days.
Throughout the story, Beowulf fights three battles against frightening monsters. Beowulf, the prince of the Geats, was a well known warrior with extreme strength who makes a promise to protect his people under any circumstance. In the poem, his strength is tested, but he uses it to save many people in battles against: Grendel, Grendel 's mother, and a dragon. Before, during, and after each of these battles Beowulf shows many similarities and differences in his actions.
... their, “fate”. Beowulf takes with him the greatest of warriors when he goes to fight the dragon and they all falter, it is because there is uncommon valor and bravery within Beowulf, it was the same with Batman. “Gotham not only has a mayor, but a police commissioner, a police chief, and squads of officers, but it is Batman who defeats the city’s dragons”. (Beowulf to Batman, Rollin) Beowulf fulfilled two of the roles in Gotham, he was the mayor and Batman. It was this that made him great and it was his fate that led him to do it.
Beowulf fought many monsters in his life including Grendel and his mom. He fought Grendel to protect the people of Herot. As an extremely strong person he decided to go fight monsters that no one had dared to. Using his strength, Beowulf had won the battle.“ He twisted in pain, and the bleeding
In the beginning of the novel, we find that that a mysterious creature attacked Hrothgar, the king of Danes and his army. In response to the situation, Hrothgar decides to call Beowulf who happens to his nephew. In this account of the story Beowulf is the hero to the Danes. He defeats the monster and it's mother. In contrast, in the novel Grendel, Grendel tells the story from his perspective. He describes to the how he wanted to be friends with the humans. In hi attempt to communicate, he is unsuccessful and finds himself being attacked. After trying several more times to befriend the humans, he deices to carry out his plan of being what society ‘wants’ him to be.
Beowulf never really uses his weapons, he tends to throw them aside when he comes into contact with them. He chooses the difficult way for most of his battles, which usually works out for him. Batman on the other hand uses technology and weapons in almost every single fight, however, he does use hand-to-hand quite often as well. Batman has his Batmobile which contains built in machine guns, flames, and bombs. He has his own lair, which is a dark and quiet cave known as the Batcave where he stores his suit and weapons. Beowulf does not have a secret identity or a suit to protect him from evil. He goes out with the mindset that he could die in his next battle, but he still risks his life
