In recent discussions of college football sensation Leonard Fournette, a topic of heated debate has been rather football players should be required to attend college before entering the N.F.L. The current rule in place requires that players be at least three years out of highschool(Knowlton). This generally means that high school players must attend college for a few years before going to the N.F.L. One side of the argument is that this rule should not be in place because it prevents able athletes from joining as well as puts their dreams a risk as they could potentially suffer a career ending injury in college. The opposing side says that this rule provides the N.F.L with better, smarter, and more mature players. I agree with the latter argument for the said reasons and also due to the fact that the rule benefits both college and professional football. Leonard Fournette is described as “not only the best player in college football…[but] the most dominant”(Walters) as well. The running back for football powerhouse Louisiana State University has N.F.L scouts and analyst raving about his talent. The only problem is, he is not eligible to be a professional yet. The longer we “keep a few more [players] in college for another year or so,...we hope they might learn a couple more life lessons”(Brennan). Football players have to be more mature than the average person. They have to handle being under the spotlight constantly in college, being scrutinized for every wrong decision, and then they instantly become millionaires upon arriving in the N.F.L. The average person would not handle this situation well. Rather you like it or not, these guys are role models for kids. The more mature they are, the more likely they will lead a respectable life in the public. Yes, there will always be individuals who never completely mature, but we should not judge a hundreds of players by a few
A big part of NFL’s hold on players is their contract and money. Thousands of young men aspire to be on a professional team, just for the fame, money and title. They are not made aware of the lasting conditions that come with playing football and their everlasting effects. If anything NFL has gone out of their way to discredit the newer research that links playing football with CTE. CTE stands for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which is a disease that has the same effects as dementia and Alzheimer’s, except for CTE leaves tau protein deposition in distinctive areas of the brain, which is what separates C...
While in college, football players live like normal college students. Most college athletes are rewarded scholarships for playing sports. This doesn’t make them different from other students though. They go to class, and live like every other college student on campus. This differs very much from life in the NFL. While in the NFL players make millions of dollars, and become celebrities. Unlike college football players, NFL players don’t live like regular people. They usually live in mansions, and have an abundance of riches. Because of this, it is easier for fans to relate to college football players.
The next step Pride of Pickens Band needs to make is to gain its purpose again. The band has the talent and can understand what task they need to complete, but that does not mean it is going to complete the task with all its effort. If you ask any kid why he or she is in marching band, most of them could not give you an answer. There is really no reason anyone is in marching band; they are just doing it to do it with no real strive for it. The Pride of Pickens lacks pride in what it does.
Some argue that good enough athletes should enter the professional draft because of financial issues. Others argue that athletes who stay in college have a chance of getting injured before they reach the professional level. College athletes should stay in college for four years before going professional because then they will have developed the essentials to head into the draft. The choice to stay in college to get a degree will help athletes be more prepared in their professional sports careers, establish a career after their professional career, help them transition to adulthood, and produce educated individuals. (or mature individuals with more knowledge)
Imagine this you are the star player on your college football team and you get your fifth concussion causing you to be out of sports the rest of your life due to health reason and when you are 40 you get alzheimer's causing you to have life brain problems and having to spend lots of money in rehab and you never feel the same ever again and are in major det and only your are in and out of jobs because of your brain so your wife has to support you with the money to help cure it while you get lost easily when driving and can't remember stuff from the day before like why am I one this plane while heading to get therapy for your brain. This is why college athletes should be paid they should because they are too busy to have a job, The NCAA has enough money and They can put in salary caps so everybody get paid fair. But other say they shouldn't because it ruins their sentimental values and family history. Firstly they
The players have become employees of the NCAA as much as students -- employees with no compensation, which not only violates common decency but perhaps even the law.
Throughout the country young men and women are losing their priority for an education. To attend a university should be a highly cherished privilege, and it should be an even greater honor to play athletics for the university. Therefore, the writer supports the decision that the “student” comes before “athlete” in student-athlete. Playing for pay should be considered a job for “professionals”. In the rulebook, the NCAA views college athletes as armatures. This statement sums it up best. When athletes go to college, not all of them go in with the mindset that athletics is going to be their future job....
The schools should not be paying them a salary, but rather allowing their athletes to receive money for their likeness, and/or time. Now not every player is good enough to be promoted like others, it would raise the playing field in college football. It’s very selfish of the NCAA to promote these players and making money off of them with compensating them. When you look at it; it’s si...
As the United States of America gets older, so does the presidential election voting system. The argument to change this method of voting has been becoming more and more popular as the years go on. It has been said that the Framers of the Constitution came up with this method because of the bad transportation, communication, and they feared the public’s intelligence was not suitable for choosing the President of the United States. Others say that the Framers made this method because they feared that the public did not receive sufficient information about candidates outside of their state to make such a decision based on direct popular vote. My research on this controversial issue of politics will look into the factors into why the Electoral College exists and if it is possibly outdated for today’s society. It will look into the pros and cons of this voting system, and it will explore the alternative methods of voting such as the Direct Popular vote. Many scholarly authors have gathered research to prove that this voting system is outdated and it does not accurately represent the national popular will. Many U.S. citizens value their vote because they only get one to cast towards the candidate of their choice in the presidential election. Based on the Electoral College system their vote may possibly not be represented. Because of today’s society in the U.S. the Electoral College should be abolished because it is not necessary to use a middle-man to choose our president for us. It is a vote by the people, all of us having one voice, one vote.
Fans have such a love for college football, completely different from NFL but paying athletes just like professional ones would change that different environment for both players and fans completely. Fans love the idea that they are watching these young men play with passion and love for the game. University alumni like to see these players have the same loyalty to the schools that they had when they attended. It resembles a big family, which is so different than a professional team that is technically playing simply for money for the organizations. Collegiate sports is not a career or profession. It is the students' vehicle to a higher education degree (Mitchell). Like many say, “you play for the name on the front, not the back.” It is a common argument that that professio...
I believe that college sports should be considered a profession. Athletes deserve to be paid for their work. College athletics are a critical part of America’s culture and economy. At the present time, student-athletes are considered amateurs. College is a stepping-stone to the professional leagues. The NCAA is exploiting the student- athlete. Big-time schools are running a national entertainment business that controls the compensation rate of the players like a monopoly (Byers 1).
Playing a sport in college is equivalent to working a full-time job (Thomas). There are rules that allow major-college football coaches to only demand twenty hours of the players time each week (Wieberg). However, studies show that those athletes are doubling those hours per week during the season (Wieberg). Other sports are putting in the equivalent of a full time work week (Wieberg). Some NCAA officials are concerned with the amount of time spent stating that beyond forty hours is inhumane (Wieberg). Most of the athletes compete and do whatever it takes to succeed, so they enjoy spending countless hours on sports (Wieberg). Many athletes even have struggles in the classroom because they do not have enough time to study. Student-athletes at top Division I schools think of themselves as athletes more than students (Wieberg). Less than one percent of college athletes actually make it professionally (Wieberg). That means these kids should focus more on their education than on athletics. In reality, these official...
Even the waterboy gets paid! NCAA football is a billion dollar a year empire, in which coaches, executives, school presidents, board members, athletic trainers, athletic directors, equipment managers, Waterboys, towel boys, ball boys, and even team mascots all receive a chunk of the revenue. Everyone gets paid except the athletes, who don’t receive a dime of the money. That’s because it’s against NCAA rules to pay college athletes with anything other than an athletic scholarship; anything else, and it’s deemed as an improper benefit, thus making an athlete ineligible if he/she were to accept. The NCAA defends its rule of “no-pay” by claiming that all its student-athletes are “amateurs” and not employees; therefore, they’re legally not compensated. The argument over whether student-athletes should be paid or not, is particularly unsettling within the sport of football, because NCAA football is the most popular and profitable sport of all college athletics. The NCAA’s discrepancy over whether it should pay its players or not, currently has the association fighting a lawsuit filed by former UCLA basketball star Ed O’Bannon, who’s suing for compensation on behalf of former Division I football and men’s basketball players. The lawsuit challenges the NCAA’s use of student-athletes’ images and likeness for commercial purposes (PBS.org). In recent months the argument has been geared more towards whether current student-athletes should be paid or not, particularly football players, who like former Texas A&M star quarterback Johnny Manziel, provide the athleticism and entertainment that makes NCAA football the million dollar empire that it is. So, should college football players be paid?
When applying to University there are multiple steps which lead to many frustrations and stress. Everyone from the top student to the student who is forced to apply, deals with these frustrations. In my experience, I threw things, abused my computer, and my eyes may have watered from the frustrations of course. Not only is the process hard, filling in every form, obtaining letter of recommendation, but the four years that you spent trying to come up with the information you are providing was hard.
NFL players need an education in case of injuries or if they can’t play for any reason. Players can have a degree in any type of subject. If a player wants to play in the NFL, he has to attend a college or a university that has a good football program. Some players come from high school but most players come from a four year college (Field 11). If you have a son that is going to be in the NFL who wants to play linemen, he has to be about 6’8” tall and weigh around 350 lbs. Players have to know the game. They can’t hope to be a NFL player if they don’t understand how to play the game (Green 174).
