Our society puts a large emphasis on attending college because our cultural ideology states that a person must attend college to better themselves. Higher education as a means to success has become an institutionalized norm. However, college tuitions costs are increasing continuously, making it difficult for students to afford the tremendous costs of tuition. As a result, community colleges have traditionally provided an alternative for lower income students. Tuition is much cheaper, acceptance is easier, and class schedules are very flexible. Part of the issues students face comes from the ideals of the college system. Similar to the ideals of our country, the values of colleges are fed by the idea of competitive individualism: if you work hard enough, you will succeed. But this is not always possible. The Structural Functional perspective view of this issue states that the reason people fail is because they aren’t trying hard enough. The resources are all there, they just need to be used. But that is the problem, there isn’t enough resources and the actual opportunities of community colleges do not reflect the promises that are made. In contrast the conflict perspective states that community colleges are another way that the rich gain power over the poor. Similar to Karl Marx’s view on religion, it can be seen as a way to give the poorer people hope and make them think they can climb the latter to success. Instead, some students may end up worse off than when they started. People don’t always finish their degrees and are racking up a debt for nothing, and it often takes longer to finish a degree at a community college than it does at a university. Poor advising, trouble getting into classes, budget cuts, and poor funding all contribute to dragging out student’s schooling and turning a two year program into a six year event. Many people have realized the benefits of attending a community college instead of a university. Community colleges are working to give students more resources to help them succeed in their courses. And money has become available through scholarships and automatic discounts for specific students. But colleges need to continue to work against budget cuts and low funding. They need to continue to provide many resources for their students. An issue that continue to pervade is a low focus on graduating. Community colleges often focus more on getting students to attend their colleges rather than getting them to graduate and get degrees. Colleges need to set a more degree-oriented focus and offer more support to students to help them with career planning, advising for what courses to take, and discouraging students from taking courses that do not count towards their
While universities require their applicant to be somehow professional before they admit them, community colleges allow their students to enter the college experience as rookies-inexperienced- and give them the opportunity to reach professionalism. Addison herself writes “you will grow up with your first English class a bit more with your first psychology class, a whole lot more with your first biology, physics, chemistry”(257). Addison’s point is that community college are built in a way to help its student start from where they finished high school without having to get use to a whole new environment. How can we expect an adolescent to focus on their studies while they have a lot of changes going on in their life? Is it even possible for them to succeed with all those changes going on in their life? In Addison’s perspective, that is why community colleges still matter, because they can help those student, who have to learn to live like adults while their academic success is not affected.
In the article “College is Not a Commodity. Stop treating it like one,” Hunter Rawlings explains how people today believe that college is a commodity, but he argues that it’s the student’s efforts; which gives value to their education. Rawlings states that in recent years college has been looked at in economic terms, lowering its worth to something people must have instead of earn. As a professor Rawlings has learned that the quality of education has nothing to do with the school or the curriculum, but rather the student’s efforts and work ethic. One major decision one must make after exiting high school is whether to go to a university or go to community college. In the article “Two Year Are Better Than Four,” written by Liz Addison. She expressed her opinion on the significance of community colleges in comparison with the university. She stated that community college do not receive the acknowledgment and appreciation that they deserve. “what’s the matter with colleges?,” (Addison 255). although, there is a lot to agree with within the article there are some faulty statements that two year colleges don’t offer the best education possible and that community college are more engaging and individualized for a student and the price is also much less expensive than a university education.
In “Two Years Are Better than Four”, Liz Addison argues against Rick Perlstein’s article “What’s the Matter With College?”. While Perlstein questions the value of college as it currently is, Addison argues that the “community college system is America’s hidden public service gem”(Addison 257). By way of that, she defends the value of college. Unsurprisingly, as with most situations, the truth is somewhere in between ends of a spectrum created by these two articles. While I agree with Addison’s idea of community college being an accessible starting point for everyone, she fails to appropriately represent the unique culture often found in these types of colleges. Also, I think that she also fails to look at the overall purpose of attending school and then neglects to acknowledge the benefits of a four year university.
The right and privilege to higher education in today’s society teeters like the scales of justice. In reading Andrew Delbanco’s, “College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be, it is apparent that Delbanco believes that the main role of college is to accommodate that needs of all students in providing opportunities to discover individual passions and dreams while furthering and enhancing the economic strength of the nation. Additionally, Delbanco also views college as more than just a time to prepare for a job in the future but a way in which students and young adults can prepare for their future lives so they are meaningful and purposeful. Even more important is the role that college will play in helping and guiding students to learn how to accept alternate point of views and the importance that differing views play in a democratic society. With that said, the issue is not the importance that higher education plays in society, but exactly who should pay the costly price tag of higher education is a raging debate in all social classes, cultures, socioeconomic groups and races.
Although community colleges struggle with low retention and transfer rates, Everett (2015) mentioned that community colleges created opportunities for first-generation students through five divisions of admission (p. 52). The intention of this article was to address the five divisions of access provided by community colleges for first-generation college students which include: financial accessibility, geographic accessibility, programmatic accessibility, academic accessibility, cultural/social/physical accessibility and also the problems faced by these students after admission.

Community colleges has played a big role in helping middle and lower income families who can 't afford to go to 4 years colleges ,the chance to educate themselves and their children. It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). These expectations have led to students being unhappy and stressed, and have pushed them into a school or a job that they don’t particularly care for.
With tuition rising every year, students face the challenge paying the debt achieving a college degree comes with. “Student debt surpassed credit-card debt in June 2010 for the first time in history, rising to about $830 billion — or nearly 6 percent of the nation 's annual economic output”(Clemmitt, Marcia). Not everyone has a ton of money just laying around. Being that financial trouble is the biggest problem for students, they begin to question whether college is worth it or not. In recent years, students have taken out loans to help with expenses. Most students choose to attend a community and junior college to help minimize the debt. Even after graduating with a degree, students still face the struggle of finding a job in this economic time. For higher class families this may not be a problem to them. But for the middle class and low income families, they face tougher times being that they don 't have the financial help like higher class families do. For the middle class and low income families, it makes more sense attending a community and junior college rather than a four year university.
The American Education system needs to check their purpose and refocus students back on the reason for furthering their education. Although, many colleges are known for many amenities and student activities, college students need to focus on the issues at hand and conquer them with knowledge and compassion for humankind. Americans need to realize that student debt is a national crisis, and the best way to make a change is be involved and responsible for every cost during your education career. As the high school chapter is coming to a close, many students have to make a decision that will affect the rest of their lives. Hopefully, for many that decision is to enroll in a college and attain a higher education. However, as tuition costs rise, students have to take a second look at their options for a better future. A community college is that second look for many because it is the less expensive option. From 2007-2009, enrollment for community colleges has increased by 24 percent (“College costs and the CPI”). Why does community college students struggle to get their diplomas? Throughout my research I was questioning what cause college students strive to get their associate degree or transfer to a university; from my personal opinion and observation, this issue can be addressed. According to the article “Uncluttering the pathway to diploma”, there are several reasons that community college students face a very long road to graduation. Are the factors of late registering classes, lack of right academic advising, attendance policies and wide range of course selection, the main reason for the struggle of community college student?
Many high school graduates often get accepted to a four-year private or public college/university, yet choose to go to a community college in hopes that they will save money and stay away from debt. These students often plan to go to a community college for two years and transfer, often, with an associate’s degree. Yet most of these students do not even make it to their second year of community college. The average dropout rates for community colleges is at a staggering thirty-nine percent. That would mean out of one hundred students, thirty-nine would drop out; that is over one-third. There are many reasons as to why dropout rates are so high. Students often drop out because they are unengaged in the classroom and they do not have enough time to truly commit themselves to school. When students drop out, they limit themselves to future career opportunities and limit their earning potential.
