For most athletes, their coach as the biggest influence on there competitive experience. A Sport in America survey found that coaches are a leading positive influence on today’s youth. (The Importance) Across all major sports groups, coaches rank as the number one positive or negative influence on youth today. Because of a coach’s selfish expectations and negative impact many players feel trapped, and lose passion and their commitment for the game.
At their best, coaches can help their players improve their skills, perform to their best ability, develop strong character, and gain confidence. That is, if they can maximize the positive value of the sport, and they can enhance the fundamental motivation to play sports. The values of the sport

Youth Coaches are the kid’s first influence to sports; they have the impact on weather they stay out for sports or not. Often, kids are to worried to make a mistake because they think there coach will bully them. Coaches often use fear to motivate a player, but fear is a mental killer to a kid’s confidence. If a coach of young kids is unfair in attention and playing time, youth can become discouraged and stop playing the sport. Also, if a coach has an undesirable attitude and displays poor sportsmanship, it can rub off onto the players and they can begin expressing the same actions. Subsequently, when a coach forgets about making sure the kids are having fun and starts caring more about winning it takes the fun away from the kids. This may also turn the kids focus towards winning and not having fun. Finally, if your coach as a kid on your team that player may receive more playing time, and will be treated more significant then the other kids. Unfortunately, this is a big impact on if kids go out for a sport or not. Kids don’t want to sit on the bench and watch the coach’s son make the same mistake again and again and not get into trouble, but if someone else makes the same mistake they won’t play for the rest of the …show more content…
Ultimately, everything that a coach could say or do poorly, this is how the team may perform during the game. However, if a coach expressed positive sportsmanship, the team or players have a better chance of playing at a higher level, and play with sportsmanship. Also, if coaches aren’t focusing on just winning, but more about learning and enjoying the game, the kids are more are likely encouraged to stay out for the sport. Studies have shown that kids don’t care about winning they care about learning the game and having fun. Coaches who have a positive attitude towards the kids, and show them how to play the sport while having fun, are will more likely stay out for the
In order to see outcomes in this area of improvement, we as coaches must re-evaluate not only our athletes, but, in addition, our coaching styles. Of course, we all want to tell ourselves that we are great coaches and it's the athletes who are not following direction...
Coaching is an integral part of helping achieve one’s maximum abilities. Dr. Gawande (2013) explains that, “Coaches are not teachers, but they teach. They’re not your boss—in professional tennis, golf, and skating, the athlete hires and fires the coach—but they can be bossy” (p. 3). It is difficult to say what is the exact function of a coach, however, they help bring forth another point of view different from our own and they also help bring about the right mindset in order to subdue a weakness.
In a growing trend that reaches to all corners of the athletic world, coaches are being forced to cope with the added stress of disgruntled parents. More and more they are required to defend personal coaching styles and philosophies, uphold team decisions and go head to head with angry, and sometimes violent parents. The pressure has gotten to the point where coaches all over the country are quitting or being forced out of their jobs by groups of parents. High school athletics should be about learning and having fun, and when parents cross the line between cheerleader and ringleader everyone suffers.
Coaches should have an arrangement of fundamental abilities that they depend on to produce a positive outcome. Definition of a coach from the American Heritage Dictionary, Third Edition (page 167) One who trains or directs an individual or team, to train or instruct teach a team. The goal behind coaching is to exhibit the ability to get the most out of everyone on the team. It should be a goal to bring out the greatest potential from every team member. It’s insane how many players do not even know their true potential. Successful coaches assess these individuals and the team to advance them to the next level of sports. "The Little Book of Coaching, Motivating People to be Winners" by Ken Blanchard and Don Shula (2001) gives a great acronym of the word C-O-A-C-H. The acronym breaks down as follows: Conviction Driven: never compromise your beliefs-Overlearning: practice until it is perfect-Audible-Ready: know when to change-Consistency: respond predictably to performance-Honesty-Based: walk your talk. This acronym should remind you of your job as a coach. A good coach
The goal of every coach is to create an environment in which his athletes can flourish. Performance anxiety is a coach’s worst enemy simply because it can have a negative impact both mentally and physically on athletes. The mastery approach to coaching is a cognitive-behavioral intervention designed to promote a mastery-involving motivational climate (Smith, Smoll, Cumming, 2007). How a coach handles his athletes is essential for their confidence and ability to overcome any level of performance anxiety. Critical or punitive feedback from coaches can evoke high levels of negative affect in children who fear failure and disapproval, thereby contributing to a threatening athletic environment (Smith, Smoll, Cumming, 2007).
The process of becoming a great Coach requires a mix of intelligence, time, hard work, dedication, and knowledge of the sport that someone is coaching. Coaches have the opportunity to impact the players life in a huge way. Most players want to look up to their coach; because that is how influential that they can be in life. The goals every year of a coach is to win a conference championship and win a major championship. The goals vary every year for certain teams and coaches. A reason to become a coach could be the influence that coaches had on one’s childhood growing up, as coaches are usually looked at as great role models. (Foster)
Matosic et al. (2015) conducted a study to examine the relationship between personality antecedents and coach interpersonal styles from a self-determination theory perspective. Often, coaches play an extremely influential role in the lives of the athletes that they are responsible for. Motosic et al. stated that coaches exert a major impact on athletes’ “well-being,” “performance,” and “motivation” (p. 1). The researchers claimed that previous research had acknowledged the influential role of coaches by studying outcomes of coach interpersonal relations, however, previous studies had failed to examine any possible antecedents associated with coach interpersonal styles. Considering this, Matosic et al. attempted to address this gap in the research literature by formulating a study that examined the relationship between a personality antecedent and coach interpersonal styles. Self-Determination Theory provided an
To be a successful coach, the first thing a coach has to do is become well acquainted with the athlete. The coach should get to know the athlete’s life outside of track. If the coach does not know the person as an individual then he would not be able to coach them. According to a collegiate track athlete, “a track coach should not only improve your running, but he should improve your way of life” (Jones). I believe that statement is true. A coach needs to have that close personal connection with their athletes. Like a teacher would have a connection to a student. With out that teacher, student connection the athlete will not enjoy learning nor will the coach be able to teach the athlete. In fact, a coach is a teacher, and the athlete is a student. That should be true for all coaches, not just a track coach.
Also, the best way to rid of any chance of these incidents as a whole is by addressing them before they can happen. This can easily and cheaply be done with a universal program for people who are about to become a coach. This would ideally be a kind of training for coaches. For this to work, we would first have to introduce the idea to all sports programs and make it common practice to have prospective coaches go through training. Then, the administration would have the coaches go through seminars held by the administration where they go through the step-by-step to resolve issues with players as well as other useful coaching techniques.
Coaching is a very complex and demanding profession. It requires many technical and personal skills (Chamber, D., 1997). All coaches have their own style of teaching. There is no right or wrong method of coaching. Nevertheless, the coach’s philosophy determines his or her coaching aims and objectives, while having a huge influence on the athletes and it’s surrounding environment.
One negative aspect is that individual will miss out spending time with his or hers family due to putting in long nights of watching film, trying to fix their defense or offense by adjusting their players spots, or even spending time with their players after practice or in the off season getting them stronger (“https://careertrend.com/disadvantages-being-coach-1624.html”). There are good ones to your helping these men and women become better player and people. There playing the game they love and also learning a life lesson. There may be some people you don’t like on your team but at the end of the day you gotta work with them to get the win. That individual teach those kids sportsmanship.
These days, there is too much pressure on children who participate in organized sports because of the unnecessary parental involvement they experience. A growing concern amongst those involved in youth sports is that certain aspects of parental involvement become detrimental to the development and experiences of young athletes. Early emphasis on winning, making money, and the disruption of education can exceedingly affect ones desire to further participate in a sport later on in his/her life.
Coaching, however challenging, is a great way to influence the lives of others while also building their character. For as long as there have been sports, there have been people teaching the sport to the players and making them better at it. Coaches must have certain qualities in order to obtain success. One must also look at a coach’s motivation for his job, his passion for what he does, his methods for coaching, and how he became a coach in order to fully understand him. There are many questions someone may want to ask a coach about his profession if they are interested in coaching.
In today’s society being a coach can be extremely complicated especially compared to earlier years. Coaching requires not only many technical and personal skills but also has to include positive psychology that will affect all athletes regardless of gender, age, and race. After reading various articles this leads me to the question, what is a coach? How do coaches differ from one another? In addition are we forgetting the importance of not only coaching but the sports psychology aspect of coaching overall? Regardless of what you may have read or heard I believe not only do all coaches have their own coaching style but every coaching technique and style is different. Coaching styles and positive psychology are two techniques that can provide
The coach becomes a motivator and a facilitator of growth or athletic skills. This growth will ultimately lead to the attainment of individual and group goals. For the sports team, the coach will lead its members’ growth in developing training, providing encouragement, and monitoring their progress. The player will become more skillful in the game. More skillful players win. Sport coaches will assess their players’ overall strengths and weaknesses by placing the player in a position which accentuates their positive attributes, in an attempt to overcome any negative aspects.
