The Negative Effects of PED’s on the Sporting World
“Cheaters never win.” This adage describes my thoughts on the topic of PEDs.
Performance enhancing drugs have an overall negative effect on the world of sports. When athletes use PEDs they are not only cheating themselves, but also the people who look up to them. Cheaters have changed the sports world permanently and have negatively impacted the youth of today.
Professional athletes have a lot of pressure to be good role models for youth.
Youth are very impressionable and will mimic the athletes they look up to. They may copy their shot style, touchdown dance, or even their style of clothing. If youth will copy these things, what

A-Rod was suspended for the entire 2014 MLB season because of his 162-game suspension. Major League Baseball first sought a 211-game suspension, but arbitrator Fredric Horowitz got the suspension reduced. Prior to Alex Rodriguez’s steroid scandal, he was widely considered to be a shoo-in for the Hall of Fame. Now, even though he has Hall of Fame numbers, it is certainly questionable whether he will get in or not. A-Rod has certainly not only let down those that look up to him ,but also the use of steroids and cheating has ruined his reputation and possibly his career (“Strike Out? Should Steroid Users be Banned From the Hall of …show more content…
Rookies may look at an MVP caliber athlete and try to emulate his lifestyle. Athletes are pressured to win, “no matter the cost.” This pressure may come from coaches, teammates, or even family members. Olympic athletes may be the most impacted athletes when it comes to the need to win attitude. An olympic athlete has one shot at glory; one shot at winning a medal for his or her country. This shot only comes once every four years, so they are certainly pressured to perform (“Top 10 Pros and Cons- Drug Use in
Performance enhancing drugs affect so many people that don’t even realize it. Fans of the game, coaches, university leaders and of course athletes are the major groups of people that can be affected the most from the usage of performance enhancing drugs. Numerous studies have stated that an athletes drug use in sport could be credited to a complex interaction of personal and environmental factors (Judge). Athletes hold themselves to high standards for themselves or maybe even family members they must provide for. Athlete will do whatever it takes to strive in their sport because in most cases personal success can lead to better opportunities such as the National Football League or maybe even the National Basketball Association. Overall, individuals can be affected in a positive manner through the use of performance enhancing drugs. Furthermore, the use of performance enhancing can do nothing but help athletes. Also, some college athletes need performance enhancing drugs more than others. Not every athlete comes from a well provided family and knowing that can plaque athletes to where they’ll do whatever it takes to be successful. With this in mind it would totally be unfair if only one or a couple of athlete used enhancing drugs however if every athlete were granted the right to use performance enhancing drugs there
For those who've never heard of the term PED's, Performance enhancing drugs are any supplements that are considered to allow one perform better in their respective sports ,such as anabolic steroids and HGH( Human Growth hormones). The effects of these supplements can range from expediting muscle to increasing one's stamina. PEDs began to become the center of controversy when the I.O.C set up a medical commission to oversee the fight against doping, which ultimately lead to the ban of PED's in professional sports. Stemming off from the I.O.C...
Some people, such as Vince Lombardi, argue that the win is all there is. They say it motivates them to do well and will help them reach their dreams and give them the desire to achieve their best. Whereas others, such as Elizabeth Larsen, argue that the emphasis on the win is too great. Larsen says, “Some athletes take anabolic steroids as performance-enhancing drugs to build muscle and endurance.” So according to Larsen, kids are under such a great pressure to do well, that they resort to steroids could greatly affect them later on in life; emotionally and physically. (Dying to Be Strong). So then is the the issue is whether the win is the most beneficial element or is it how they play the game becoming too hazardous?
Performance enhancing drugs are not fair in sports. First off, they are a form of cheating. Most athletes work in the weight room and sacrifice their time. They work hard to use their natural talents and abilities, PED’s give the players an undeserved and unfair edge over his or her peers. “It is not fair to those that are naturally talented or work hard to remain in shape for another to come in and take the spotlight because they have decided to take the easy route” says a individual from Debate.Org. Along with giving the player a trump card, so to speak, it gives the whole team an advantage. Therefore, the whole team or organization is now cheating! “Hard workouts can not have the same benefits as PED’s, this makes the users have an advantage.”
The truth is, they do produce side effects and irregular muscle growth. By banning the use of performance enhancing drugs, just like steroids, sports competition will have a much healthier and fairer environment to participate in. Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports The use of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs is a common trend that is currently fascinating athletes all over the world. Athletes who are using these drugs are damaging the sport and harming their bodies at the same time.
Imagine a world of sports without the worry of steroids. Now picture one where everyone is on them. Which is the better way? Thousands of years ago Olympic athletes saw the greatest achievement was simply taking part in such a special event. A lot of people argue that the use of steroids is sports is cheating. It is giving an unfair advantage to athletes over those who aren't using. But a counter argument says that a wealthy athlete has an advantage anyway. These individuals have the ability to buy the best trainers and virtually have no worries. This can be considered an unfair advantage but is still allowed by all perfesional sports. For good or for bad what is steriods doing to our world class athletes and entertainment around the world?
The journal article, “What does sport mean to you? Fun and other preferences for adolescents’ sport participation” claims that fun, social aspects, masculinity, and identity are the main reasons youth participate in sports (Skille and Østera˚ s, 360). Oftentimes, athletes forget they are on the same team, and they start to form cliques or groups based around who has the best bench press or 40 meter dash time. As a result, teammates start to compete with each other instead of working towards the same goal. For instance, one coaching journal article claims that “moral reasoning” in youth is determined through “collective norms” or group behaviors that the coach has a hand in influencing (Shields, LaVoi, Bredemeier, Power, 748-749). A proper coaching environment should therefore revolve around a fun, supportive, and collective environment where success is encouraged through the full support of the team. This support can further be developed through proper positive mindfulness and code of conduct guidelines set forth by the coach; for instance, hazing should be discouraged and proper communication and helpfulness among teammates should be
Athletes are often pressured from an early age to be better than the rest. In sports such as football, baseball, basketball, and soccer, the need to be “great” is becoming a dominant factor in the world of sports. Regardless of which sport is chosen, the stigma to be great is slowly surpassing the main goal of sportsmanship among team players. With the notion that being great is the key; many athletes, both amateur and professional, are relying on steroids to help bring them to the top of their game. Steroid use can cause damaging effects to the body and preventing this may save the lives and careers of current and future students. This essay is written to explain the problems of steroids in sports and the solutions in which to help deter or stop this problem.
Introduction I want you all to ask yourselves how far you’re willing to go to be the best at the thing you do most. For some people, the choice they must make is going to be a very big one with very real side effects. I’m sure many of you watch professional sports and the Olympics. I’m a very big fan of sports and I researched this topic because I find it incredibly interesting how far these athletes are willing to go to be the best at their craft. Although I have never done them, I passively gain knowledge about performance-enhancing drug usage in sports and the effects it has on the body every day.
These days, there is too much pressure on children who participate in organized sports because of the unnecessary parental involvement they experience. A growing concern amongst those involved in youth sports is that certain aspects of parental involvement become detrimental to the development and experiences of young athletes. Early emphasis on winning, making money, and the disruption of education can exceedingly affect ones desire to further participate in a sport later on in his/her life.
Many Athletes are willing to do whatever it takes to become a professional. One of the easiest ways to enhance natural ability is through performance-enhancing drugs or, PEDs. PEDs are substances used by athletes to increase their performance. The use of PEDs in athletic competition can date back to ancient Greece. Athletes use PEDs to run faster, jump higher and recover at an increased pace. Many athletes are pressured into using PEDs by coaches or managers and are not thoroughly educated the harmful health issues that can come along with taking performance-enhancing drugs. A rising issue is if performance-enhancing drugs should be allowed in professional sports. I believe that in any professional sport, the use of performance-enhancing drugs by athletes should continue to be banned because this rule will help to keep athletes from abusing these harmful drugs.
Performance enhancing drugs might be beneficial for athletes in present time, but have horrific long term consequences. PEDs have many types of negative effects on the human mind and body. These various types of drugs affect how you act and body features. PEDs should not be used by any competitor in any competitive sport or activity.
As Shannon indicates athletes are slowly taking in that role of building those key characteristics. For instance the role of being a leader and owning up to their responsibilities.
Secondly, performance-enhancement impacts the future generation of upcoming athletes. Professional athletes are role models to many world-wide. They are a symbol of inspiration and motivation to young athletes. Upcoming professionals look up to their determination and love of fair and true sportsmanship in successful athletes. Allowing performance enhancing drugs in ...
Overall it is clear that the need to use performance enhancing drugs is outweighed by the consequences and issues caused by performance enhancing drugs. Sporting events such as the world cup, the Olympics or the World Series make young children feel inspired and encouraged about what they could achieve through dedication and hard work. I feel it is important for the sporting industry as well as the athletes to return respectability to the sport. By
