One of the major downsides of social media involves children and teens. In an academic journal Doug Fodeman stated: “To students using Facebook, there is a false sense of privacy.” Since social media users aren’t interacting face-to-face, they feel anonymous, therefore causing a lack of social responsibility in their mind. This can lead to some very negative repercussions, such as stolen bank accounts. Many children do not fully understand that nearly anything posted on the internet can be found in some way, causing a security risk. Where the security risk begins, is when a user adds a hacker as a friend. Informal studies show that teens accept 44% to 87% of friend requests from strangers. If a hacker becomes friends with someone over social media, they can then see nearly everything posted by the victim unless manually set to not show certain information. If the user is not careful with what information they share online, hackers can collect enough information over time to guess passwords for accounts to do all kinds of damage such as stealing bank accounts, installing viruses, or even identity theft (Fodeman). This major downside of social media is made worse for people who do not know what type of information is safe to share on the internet. Not only is there a security risk, but social media can be harmful for people’s social lives as

“The internet has 3.17 billion users. 2.3 billion of those people are users of social media. Every person has about 5.54 social media accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter , etc. Facebook and Whatsapp handle about 60 billion messages per day” (Smith). These are just a few statistics on how many people use social media and how often they use it. I myself am an active user of social media. I have Twitter and Facebook, Instagram and other accounts even. Social media can be used for good and bad purposes, just like everything. Social media can help things like communication with distant relatives and friends, games and pastimes, having a place for all of your memories and photos, and advertisements for things a user might be interested in. Social media can also have big effects on things like businesses, education, and your everyday life. “In 1995, newsweek published the now infamous article titled, “The Internet, Blah!”
“Social media, a web-based and mobile technology, has turned communication into a social dialogue, and dominates the younger generation and their culture. As of 2010, Generation Y now outnumbers Baby Boomers, and 96% of Gen Y has joined a social network” (Qualman 1). Social media now accounts for the number one use of the Internet, and this percentage is rising bigger every day (Qualman). As a consequence, people are becoming more reliant on social media, which has a led to a number of advantageous as well as unfavorable effects. The world is more connected today than it has ever been in the past, and this is all because of growth in technology. What has yet to be determined though
Social media is so popular that according to a recent article published by forbes.com, “72% of American adults are currently using social media sites; that figure has gone up 800% in just 8 years”(Olenski). Social networking was originally created to simply reconnect people with old high school pals, but in recent years it has evolved into a completely different operation. When social media first originated it was also intended for adult usage, which has in recent years expanded into the usage of all ages. Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
In the age that we live in, social media has intergraded with college student’s daily lives and how much time is spent on social media. Social media is neither inherently bad nor good it all depends on how it is being used. “Social media are increasingly mobile, smartphones and tablets give users instant and around the clock access to social media and other web functions.” (Martinez-Aleman) When college students access sites on social media like Twitter or Facebook and get side tracked then social media is bad because it effects their education. However, when it is being used to communicate with their peers or professors then social media is a tool of good. Some researchers believe that the social media helps college

From people constantly checking their Facebook page to people posting pictures on Instagram, social media has changed people’s behavior and the way that they communicate with others. Social media includes websites such as Facebook and Twitter. This essay will focus on the causes and effects of social networking on the daily lives of American citizens.
The correlation between the development of youth and social media has become blatant. Although few of the consequences are favorable, the majority have displayed a negative impact. The drive social media can implement on youth is exceptional. The pressure and strain social media can place on our youth is an enduring force which leads individuals to question themselves as a person and feel inclined to fit a norm expressed in media and social media of our society. The underlying force social media can play in the lives of the youth is astonishing and is a force that must be dealt with and controlled, for it not only holds the power to give an individual strength, but also to break them down.
Today’s generation in America is widely affected by social media, but the real question that millions want the answer to is what is the real impact? “76% of American adults online use social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, as of July 2015, up from 26% in 2008. On social media sites like these, users may develop biographical profiles, communicate with friends and strangers, do research, and share thoughts, photos, music, links, and more. ” Social media has been the cause of countless problems, but also the solution to numerous issues which is why it is so hard to decide if it is more helpful than it is a burden or vise versa.
We live in a world that has become addicted and dedicated toward social media and it is driving America’s youth into the ground. Teenagers and adults are so wrapped up in social media that is runs their lives every day. Constantly people are checking their phones for the latest on social networks. They have to see pictures, tweets, statuses, comments, likes, and the list goes on and on. Even though people have different opinions on whether social media has a positive or negative impact on society, it can be said that social media has a positive effect on society as a whole because it lets people communicate with each other easily, it has been said to improve education among children, and has helped improve the economy in the world. One of the main reasons why social media has positively affected our society is because of how it has made communicating with people much easier. “Today, four out of five active internet users maintain at least one social media profile” (Moe, 3). Using these websites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and etc., people talk about everything with anyone from what they are planning to do, to what they are eating and much more (Moe, 24). We can also send private messages to other users of these websites about personal matters that you just want to discuss with them.
Although social media has provided todays society with instant forms of communication and ways to connect, it also created a new standard for living and has caused problems for many groups of citizens in all walks of life and has caused society to re-think its usage. There are two views about social media, either. It is a positive addition to society and its benefits outweigh the risks, or that social media causes more harm than good and it’s usage should be limited. Some of the ideas that are central to the idea that social media is a benefit to today’s society are that social media encourages increased communication with friends and family, provides fast access to breaking news and other information, and helps businesses attract new business and correspond more quickly with their existing customers.
There are about one and a half billion users of social media worldwide. It can be used to meet new people, find old friends, chat the day away, join interest groups, or even to share pictures. Social networks were mostly created so people could meet and find new friends. What most users of social media don't know, are the dangers of using social media. One example is when you meet a person online, because they are not always who they say they are. If someone is not who you may think they are, who could they be? They can be a stalker or a person that wants to steal your identity; which could be done easily thanks to new developments of new technology. Also thanks to new technology it is now easier for people using your information to track you. Posting personal information can risk your family and friends lives. Social media can be used as a weapon against you. It can even lead to a kidnapping, or even someone's death. Many people use social media to help to waste time, but could also become an unhealthy addiction. Also social media can damage your future. When you are a teen you tend to post pretty much anything you want. This is dangerous because you can post too much personal information. What most teens don't realize is that what they do on social media now can affect them for the rest of their life. It can even come back to haunt you in the future. Social media is dangerous because it makes it easier to be stalked, identity theft to happen, kidnappings and murders, and also can ruin your future.
