Freire and Baldwin: Similarities in Thought Despite living in the same time period, Freire and Baldwin have distinctive ideas. A couple of the ideas that they both touch upon, even briefly—although don’t always agree with each other on the subjects—are education, and one’s place, and the feeling of being an outsider. These two ideas are touched upon frequently in Baldwin’s The Discovery of What It Means to be an American and Freire’s The “Banking” Concept of Education. Despite being born within a decade of each other, Baldwin and Freire lived very different lives that might have contributed to the differences in the details of their thoughts. Baldwin talks about role and how one must change their place in the world in order to appreciate one’s role in society, while Freire talked about how the teachers in the schooling systems needed to change their roles in the lives of those they taught. Baldwin talks about his place in the world and how isolated he felt from the people of America. He had to leave America to find his “role— as distinguished…from [his] “place” — in the extraordinary drama which is America, [he] was released from the illusion that [he] hated America” (Baldwin 2). Going to France released him from the role he thought he was stuck in. Freire adds to this idea when talking about the role of students and teachers who “instead of communicating, the teacher issues communiques and makes deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat. This is the “‘banking ' concept of education, in which the scope of action allowed to the students extends only as far as receiving, filing, and storing the deposits” (Freire 1). Freire discuses the solution to this problem by using “problem-posing education, which breaks with the vertical characteristic of banking education [and] can fulfill its function of freedom only if it can overcome the above contradiction. Through dialogue, the teacher-of-the-students and the students-of-the-teacher cease to exist and a new term emerges: teacher-student with students-teachers” (Freire 6). According to Freire one of the main problems with the ‘banking’ is “the banking approach to adult education…will never propose to students that they critically consider reality” (Freire 3). Baldwin also talks about his role when he says that while in France he started listening to Bessie Smith to “ re-create the life that [he] had first known as a child and from which [he] had spent so many years in flight” (Baldwin 1). In “The Discovery of What It Means to Be an American” by James Baldwin, written in 1961, he tells us he grew up in the United States but moved to Paris, France. He description of the differences of bring an American writer in Europe and the feeling of being released from American social norms and adjusting to European way of life through his experiences. Baldwin goes to describe his personal experiences as a writer, talking to people from all classes and parts of Paris. He tells us of how these experiences make him a better writer and how it changed his views on the “American Dream”. Baldwin goes on to tell us of the difference of his profession being seen as less suspicious and lack of a “fixed” society in Europe

Baldwin’s father died a broken and ruined man on July 29th, 1943. This only paralleled the chaos occurring around him at the time, such as the race riots of Detroit and Harlem which Baldwin describes to be as “spoils of injustice, anarchy, discontent, and hatred.” (63) His father was born in New Orleans, the first generation of “free men” in a land where “opportunities, real and fancied, are thicker than anywhere else.” (63) Although free from slavery, African-Americans still faced the hardships of racism and were still oppressed from any opportunities, which is a factor that led Baldwin’s father to going mad and eventually being committed. Throughout Baldwin’s essay he strategically weaves narrative, analytical, and argumentative selections together. The effect that Baldwin has on the reader when using this technique is extremely powerful. Baldwin combines both private and public affairs in this essay, which accentuates the analysis and argument sections throughout the work. Baldwin's mind seems to be saturated with anger towards his father; there is a cluster of gloomy and heartbreaking memories of his father in his mind. Baldwin confesses that "I could see him, sitting at the window, locked up in his terrors; hating and fearing every living soul including his children who had betrayed him" (223). Baldwin's father felt let down by his children, who wanted to be a part of that white world, which had once rejected him. Baldwin had no hope in his relationship with his father. He barely recalls the pleasurable time he spent with his father and points out, "I had forgotten, in the rage of my growing up, how proud my father had been of me when I was little" (234). Throughout his literature, James Baldwin discusses the issues of racial inequality within America and discusses reasons for the conflicts between races, proposing his solutions to the problems. One of the most important and recurring motifs between his works is the idea of history; the history of whites in western society and its origin in European thinking and the history of the American Negro, whose history is just as American as his white counterpart’s. The importance of these histories as being one combined “American history” is integral to the healing process between the two races. The 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court decision is a landmark event for blacks and whites alike, and the events following three years later in Little Rock, Arkansas mark the beginning of a long journey to fulfill the promise of equal education made by the Supreme Court. The 1957 events in Little Rock quickly became the nationally covered story of the Little Rock Nine, a legacy that still lives on today despite a James Baldwin prediction made in his essay “Take Me to the Water.” Specifically, nine African-American students were given permission by the Little Rock school board to attend Central High School, one of the nation’s top 40 high schools, integrating a formally all-white campus. The same consistent, expressive voice introduces Ms. Angelou's effective strategy of comparison and contrast. By comparing what the black schools don't have, such as 'lawn, nor hedges, nor tennis courts, nor climbing ivy,' reveals not only a clear illustration of what luxuries the white schools in the forties had but also how unjust the system was. The adults at the graduation focus on the differences that were previously left unspoken. The black principal's voice fades as he describes "the friendship of kindly people to those less fortunate then themselves" and the white commencement speaker implies that" the white kids would have a chance to become Galileo's.... and our boys would try to be Jesse Owenes..." The author's emotions vary from the first proclamation that "I was the person of the moment" to the agonizing thoughts that it "was awful to be a Negro and have no control over my life" to the moment of epiphany: "we are on top again."
James Baldwin writes about two African-American brothers growing up in Harlem, a black ghetto in New York, during the 1950's. During this time black people were forced to live in a world of prejudice, discrimination, poverty and suppression. The life of a black person was very difficult; many opportunities afforded to whites were not afforded to blacks. Sonny and his brother lived in the projects and had many obstacles to overcome that white people didn't have to. Sonny chose music to outwardly express his suffering, his brother chose to bottle it up and keep it inside, but this is the common thread they both shared. Suffering is also shown in the story when Baldwin says "it came to me that what we both were seeking through our separate cab windows was that part of ourselves which had been left behind" (P 47). I think this quote means that both Sonny and his older brother want to retrieve some of their past so that it can help them cope with what has happened in their lives. If Sonny and his brother can both cope with what has happened in their lives and get over it, I think t they both can start moving forward and putting this behind them.
In his work, “A Talk to Teachers,” James Baldwin poured out his point of view on how he believed American children should be taught. Throughout the essay, Baldwin focused on a specific race of school children: Negros. Perhaps this was because he himself was an African American, or even for the mere idea that Negros were the most vulnerable for never amounting to anything — according to what the American society thought during the twentieth century, specifically the 1960s when this piece was published. With the focus determined, the reader is able to begin analyzing Baldwin’s main appeal through the essay. At first glance one could argue that the essay has no credibility with Baldwin’s lack of not being a school teacher himself; however, when further evaluated one could state that whether or not he was a school teacher has nothing to do with the fact that he establishes his credibility, he appeals to morals, emotions with authority, and values, which thus outweighs the possible negativities associated with his argument.
After an incident in a restaurant in the United States where they refused to serve him, Baldwin no longer felt like he wanted to live in a place where he was oppressed. When he was speaking about being in Paris, Baldwin said that he no longer felt the same menace that he felt when he was in the United States. This gave him an opportunity to breathe, to feel like he belonged and could focus on understanding the world in a different way. He felt less observed, because no one really cared what he did. From the narrator’s life in Harlem that he loathed, to the drug problems and apprehensions that Sonny was suffering from, to the death of his own daughter Grace, each of these instances serve to show the wretchedness that the narrator and his family had to undergo. The story in relation to Baldwin possibly leads to the conclusion that he was trying to relate this to his own life. At the time before he moved away, he had tried to make a success of his writing career but to no avail. However, the reader can only be left with many more questions as to how Sonny and the narrator were able to overcome these miseries and whether they concluded in the same manner in the life of Baldwin.
