In recent years, a growing number of parents may send their children to study abroad. The university of Cambridge had nearly 1,000 Chinese students, who study in undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in engineering, sciences, mathematics, international relations, economics and finance, and administration (BBC news, 2011). These parents believe that their children may become more autonomous, because their children have to look after themselves and manage their finance (Topuniversities, 2014). However, there are some difficulties, such as foreign language problems, teaching methodologies, exam and social network need to be faced, when they study abroad for the first time. For example, In the Western countries, teachers are likely to suggest students to study in a group (Samuelowicz, 1987). However, in Asia, teachers are not focus on teamwork, they prefer to require students to carry out their own work. In addition, teachers demand students write down notes as what they have said and recorded the board. However, in Western countries, students gain knowledge from seminars or team discussions. It means that eastern students may be accustomed to gain knowledge as passive recipients in class. It seems that overseas students have less experience to study in groups and gain knowledge positively (Samuelowicz 1987). Moreover, Asian students usually take advantage of the ability of observation, imitation, repetition, recitation and other related methods to study new knowledge (Henry J, 1976). Therefor, it is probably difficult for Asian students to be united in action as local students at the beginning of study in Western universities. Another difference is that in Western education, teachers usually provide a list of reference books or videos related classes to help students preview what they will learn. In comparison, Asian teachers rarely give students academic materials to prepare their lessons. In Asian countries, students are not obliged to make presentations in their studies. However, in Western countries, the presentation is regarded as a measure to examine what students have studied or whether they have prepared for the courses (Stephen Lin and Molly Yang, 2009). Asian students possibly feel nervous during the presentation. It means that they are scared of making mistakes and being under the spotlight. In addition, they care what other students have thought about their presentation. For instance, when they offer the idea or introduce the topic, they expect to attract others’ attention and obtain a sense of identity. When they make mistakes they would worry to be considered "very stupid" for their audience. In some situations, presentation anxiety may have some serious impacts on the health of international students, such as dizziness, stomachache and rapid breathing. (King’s college London).
King’s college London points out that international students may breathe deeply to make themselves relax before doing the presentation. Furthermore, students are encouraged to take advantage of some psychological suggestions, i.e. “I can do it better” and “Do not worry about them”. Few people are fearless speakers. As students, we generally feel the rumble of butterflies in our stomachs, but the most we have to lose is a good grade.
A: I am very comfortable when I am delivering presentations. Throughout my years in high school, I learned a couple of tips on giving a presentation. I learned that every presentation should be approached differently. The most important tip I learned was to be yourself. When I have fears, I usually listen to music to calm me down.
This helped so much because the students were able to concentrate and listen when the evaluations were of benefit to them especially if it could count on their grades learnt that presentations are so important because you get to learn so many things as you present from your fellow peers.
During my demonstration speech, I was affected by my speech anxiety. Some of the viewable symptoms were the shaking of my hands and also the stuttering of speech. I was able to control myself and relax after I started getting into my information. I did use some of the suggested relaxation techniques to relieve my anxiety. Before I got up to speak I thought confident of myself to help give me courage and confidence.
I believe that, if I feel nervous in the future, I will not be afraid of this emotion like what I did before. This course provided me knowledge on how to make me relax. Little by little, I have gained the confidence of combating the fear of public speaking in this course. All these precious experience will continue benefiting me in the future. Lucas devotes a section of chapter one to talking about the history of public speaking stating that every culture has some word equivalent of the word speaker. Lucas then goes on to tell the similarities and differences between public speaking and conversation. Stephan Lucas then goes on to explains in this chapter that nervousness and stage fright are among the leading causes for the fear of public speaking. But he then assures us that nervousness is normal, and a welcomed part of speech giving. Lucas proves his point by saying, “If you feel nervous about giving a speech, you are in very good company. Some of the greatest public speakers in history have suffered from stage fright, including Abraham Lincoln, Margaret Sanger, and Winston Churchill” (Lucas, 2012 pg. 9). Lucas says that you should not run from your nervousness, but instead try to turn it into a positive nervousness. Lucas then goes on to give six ways to turn the negative nervousness into positive nervousness. For my “How to do” speech my goal was to share with the class an interesting and informative way to learn something new. Due to the speeches time limit, I knew I needed to be well prepared. I wanted to be less nervous before and during my speech. While presenting I was nervous, but I didn’t really have time for these feelings to sink in because I was focused on the information I wanted to share with the audience. I enjoyed presenting in the second group of speeches so I could see my peers different types of speaking style. The audience seemed alert and interested in my topic which made it a little bit easier for me to speak, because there weren’t any distractions in the room from people not paying attention. International students face many different challenges when studying abroad. This is due to many factors. First they are living in a country very far away from their own. The country they are studying in also has a very different way of life than theirs. Also the laws in foreign country are much different than the laws in their own country. Due to that they face a lot of problems trying to adapt to this new culture. Me personally as an international student in the US studying in ASU have faced three particularly difficult challenges that I was able to overcome through time. In this essay I will explain how international students can overcome tough challenges and situations.

After my high-school graduation I did not know which university should I go to? Should I go to a university in my home country or at one in other country? At that time I did not know the answer for that question, and I did not know which choice could be better. I needed some advice or someone to tell me the better choice, and in my life I did not know a person better than my dad on giving advices. He told me that the better choice would be to study abroad, and I will tell you how he convinced me.
In order to convey this idea towards anxious students anticipating a mentally taxing course, I’ve developed three tips to prepare the upcoming prospects for a semester of public speaking. First, it is integral that the student does all the work assigned to them within the time allotted without slacking. This will give the student ample time to prepare, making room to edit last minute tweaks and changes to the speech, as well as room to practice properly. Secondly, practice the main content of your speech as much as possible and expect to forget minor details. Once you have the important points memorized, you can always adapt on the fly to external and internal distractions. Also, try speaking aloud to a corporeal being, an audience of one is always better than an audience of none. Lastly, design each speech around a topic that you are passionate about. If you are truly interested or connected to your topic, the passion shows to your audience. Your speech will flow better when the audience believes that you believe in what you are saying. Imagine walking onto a plane and travelling 3,000 miles across the ocean to spend the first semester of your college career in a completely different place than you’ve lived your entire life. Well, that was something that I personally experienced about two years ago. I got accepted to Arcadia University, and into their “FYSAE” (First Year Study Abroad Experience) Program. It was probably the most exciting, yet nerve-wracking thing that I had ever done in my life. I got on a plane and went to the UK for a full four months as a new freshman in college. When I was leaving my home, family, friends, and job I was anxious and sad to be leaving, but once I arrived in the UK I could not contain my excitement. I studied at Stirling University in Stirling, Scotland. The semester that I studied abroad was probably the best time of my life. In those four short months, I experienced a different culture, ate new foods, made lifelong friends, travelled to other places, learned to understand an accent that sounds like a whole other language, and learned to be independent. I accomplished all this while learning and taking a full course load (and getting good grades) at the university.
During the first two years of BSc, there will be several students who are still in the process of figuring out if they want to pursue their major degree in Science or some other disciplines. Quality of teaching and delivering the subject is therefore one of the most important factors that will help students to decide.
