The robotic technology development is gaining momentum in the 21st century. A robot can be defined as a machine that performs different tasks and can be programmed by humans (Pangka, Hui and Yan 2013). The qualities of robots such as tirelessness and lack of emotionality makes them perfect task performers. Robots are used in many spheres such as domestic service, military, and healthcare. There are also several types of robots used in medicine. Robots can be used as nurse assistants, patient companions and also robots can perform some easy surgeries or assist surgeons. The purpose of this project is to describe the impacts of using robotic technology in medicine. Robots accomplish procedures less riskily and with greater accuracy (Golub and Tkacheva 2011). One example of using the robotic technology in medicine is a humanoid robot NAO which is aimed at healing children with autism by interacting with them. Despite some limitations and the novelty of this robot, the application of the robot NAO into medicine has significant benefits and is probably the most effective solution for autism.
According to Shamsuddin et al. (2012b) autism is considered as a spectrum disorder because it covers a wide range of symptoms and different levels of impairment or disability

Firstly, NAO is very expensive and most families who need it, therefore, will not be able to buy it. Secondly, little research was done on this topic because of its novelty, so it is difficult to predict will NAO have significant impact on the medicine development. Another disadvantage is that NAO robots cannot perform a particular task and has some limitations related to the movement and gestures, so NAO cannot walk fast. Finally, the robot is comparatively new and not widespread, so the people in certain parts of the world are still unaware of an existence of this
The main type of assistive technology of the future is the use of personal care robots. These robots are machines that resemble human-like characteristics/intelligence. The robots will be controlled by voice command and assist seniors in daily tasks at home, such as activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living (Bernard, 2014). Robots allow for the opportunity to resolve dilemmas of understaffed nursing homes or assisted living communities, providing care to older adults whose names are on a waiting list for facility care. A robot, known as the Paro Robot, has been developed and tested within the field of long term care. This therapeutic robot costs $6,000.00 and was developed by Japan’s Advanced Institute for Science and Technology (Older Adults, Technology, and the Future of Long-Term Care, 2015). The steep price of this robot further allowed for the creation of a cheaper form of robotic care that will be used for the future of long term care. Japan’s Advanced Institute for Science and Technology created the $100.00 robot pet, which can be used as animal therapy. This type of therapy confers lots of benefits to the health and well being of older adults, without the risk of infections, bits, etc. These robots
Robotic Surgery is an emerging technology that utilizes purpose-built robots to perform surgical procedures on patients. At present these robots are not autonomous, they are controlled by a surgeon at all times.
... Namely as a doctor you need people skills and compassion you can’t have a robot just simply say “Hello Mr. Smith my scanner reads that you have cancer and that it is terminal you have 3 months.” You need someone who can feel empathy for another human being who knows what it is like to life jump up and smack them in the face. Another problem that it could have is if a patient who is terminal tells a doctor to let him die. The Mat would cause a conflict between the first and second laws of robotics. The robot must obey the order of the human who is either requesting euthanasia or is refusing medical treatment but by doing so they would break the first law which does not allow them to harm a human either directly or indirectly. So there are in fact some issues with M.A.T.-A but there is still a considerable benefit to their implication throughout the medical field.
The term ‘spectrum’ reflects wide variation in challenges and strengths passed by each person with autism.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be detected early in a child’s life. ASD is a developmental disorder classified by problems with social interaction,
Because autism symptoms vary in degrees and severity, autism is considered a spectrum disorder; each individual falls somewhere within the spectrum depending on their specific symptoms. Though autism affects a small percentage of children, the number of those affected is on the rise. There are different types of autism including Asperger’s, a mild form of autism in which the individual affected becomes obsessive over interests, and Rett syndrome which affects mostly females and is marked by the loss of communication skills. Asperger’s is on the higher
“Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. With the May 2013 publication of the DSM-5 diagnostic manual, all autism disorders were merged into one umbrella diagnosis of ASD. Previously, they were recognized as distinct subtypes, including autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome. “ (Autism Speaks, 2014) Autism affects many children. My niece at 3 years old was diagnosed with autism. She funtions quite well. She can communicate fully, unlike others, some may never be able to fully communicate verbally. Like most with my niece she has a routine and if anything major alters her routine it can cause a meltdown. With the proper coping methods autism can be managed with Special Education teachers and school psychologists.
I chose the Da Vinci Surgical system as my topic because I am interested into going to physical therapy or into the orthopedics field after undergrad. Surgical equipment is highly important due to the hundreds of accidents that happen and also the high percentage of diseases. As these incidents occur it is important to consider the safety of the patient when it comes to cutting into their bodies. With the invention of the Da Vinci Surgical system it helped with vision and different viewpoints of the patient’s body and also improves precision. It is important to have a machine or tool for more than one type of surgery, one to use on patients with different injuries or diseases. Overall, this surgical system helps improve and help further research how precise and how in control a surgeon can be.
The medical field has revolutionized the health and well being of society. Throughout the decades, the medical field has been through sweeping changes that leave society astonished. It seems like each year that passes by, there is a new technological advancement that modernizes the medical field. Not only do these advancements modernize medicine, but they in return aid doctors, nurses, and specialists by improving their effectiveness within the field. About ten years ago, the da Vinci Surgical System was introduced to hospitals and the medical field, in general because the FDA had finally approved the system within the United States (Dunkin). The da Vinci Surgical System, also known basically as robotic surgery, introduced the use of a surgical robot, which is operated by the doctor himself using a controlled manipulator (Declan et al.). Prior to the invention of robot-assisted surgeries, most surgeons simply did a typical laparoscopic surgery on a patient. Laparoscopic surgery is “a type of surgery performed through several small incisions, rather than one (or more) large ones as in standard "open" surgery” (Schmitz). Through the development of superior technology, such as the surgical robot; it brought about changes that effected doctors, patients, and the medical world.
Autism is a disorder characterized by significant problems in communication and social functioning. Autism is actually called Autism Spectrum Disorder and encompasses a broad range disabilities such as Asperger syndrome, Rett’s Syndrome, and Pervavasive Development Disorder (Dunlap & Fox, n.d.). There are also varying degrees of the disorder from low-functioning (no communication and no social interaction) to high-functioning (some communication and inappropriate but existent social skills.)
I know autism when I see it. For those not familiar with autism, Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, defines autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees (hence, a “Spectrum” that includes both low- and high-functioning individuals), by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors.
Biomechanical engineering is driven by needs similar to those of biomedical engineering. There is always a constant need to improve medical equipment while keeping it cost efficient. These are the two main needs for all biomedical engineers. Biomechanical engineering is specifically dedicated to applying the scientific of knowledge mechanical systems and engineering to biology and the human body. One of the many needs that drives this biomedical subfield is society’s need for more advanced equipment and machinery. Some recent advances show this need. In the last decade, biomechanical engineers have invented and innovated new robots and machines that can assist a surgeon in surgery or serve as an artificial liver. These machines satisfy the need to improve and innovate new equipment that can save lives and improve how people in the medical field perform their
...d decision-making capabilities robots have to offer, they can be used for complicated surgical procedures in the very near future. Precision handling and perfection in surgical tool alignment are vital for surgeries that occur at the micro scale (like neuro surgery).
In today's society, robots come in different types and qualities, and robots’ use was mainly in the laboratories and factories; however, that has drastically changed where their uses are changing at a high speed. In addition to that, they have spread throughout the world. The main function of robots is to replace the work that people used to do, or perform tasks that man cannot. A robot is a mechanical or virtual device that uses a computer program, or electronic circuitry, to carry out its functions. In modern science, robotics refers to the study of robots is robotics, which deals with designing, constructing, operating, and using robots and computer systems for controlling and processing information and providing feedbacks. However, as much as robots replace human labor, individuals or organizations can use them in dangerous environments that might be harmful and beneficial to humans. Therefore, to understand the logic behind the creation of robots, one should learn the pros and cons of robotics, in the current society. This is because people are using this technology without having a deep understanding of its effects. However, an objective evaluation of the use of robots, in the modern society, shows that they have a positive influence on human beings, but if the robots were overused, it could lead to a negative side. which shows why human beings should use robots wisely that will result an improvement to their societies and own lives. Robots have become interactive equipment whereby they have become part of human life. In this regard, people use them directly or indirectly to enhance the quality of their lives. However, Sharkey argues that there are ethical issues that arise because of using robots to enhance hu...
Robots are one of the artificial intelligence that made a breakthrough across all fields of life. In consequence, many research studies and projects regarding robots took place in the last decade. In addition, robots in the society could be one of the essential machines, due to their multitask system which could adjusted to any kind of performance. In general society could use these machines to fill manpower gap in short time with less cost. Therefore, robots can have huge positive effects on different fields of life such as emergency situations, daily chores, and manufacturing industry.
