Investing in space exploration missions may just be the key to ensuring the future survival of the human race. From mining resources to solving the problem of overpopulation, there are many benefits to space exploration. However, there are also challenges when it comes to just simply putting people up in space. While the environment outside of Earth’s atmosphere is fraught the danger, the lack of gravity itself can have an adverse effect on the human body. We are constantly putting our bone and muscles to work even if we aren’t actively taking the time to exercise. The gravity on Earth plays a key role in the development of our bones and muscles so as such, a weightless environment can be detrimental to our bodies. The lack of gravity means we that we don’t need to use certain parts of our bodies to move around or even to keep ourselves upright. A long term lack of muscle utilization can cause those muscles to decline and eventually weaken. In much the same fashion as a soldier spending long periods of time on the battlefield and having to face the challenge of returning to a life of normalcy once their combat tour is over, an astronaut may face challenges of having to mentally re-adjust to a normal life after coming home from a long-term space mission. Seeing the Earth from the cosmos and feeling disconnected may still linger even if that person longed for such a return. To them, everyday life might seem so minuscule and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things since that’s how it might have looked from space. Even if they are literally back on Earth, their mind might have been affected so much so from seeing our planet in space that the life they had and the person they were might have been lost in space
This can be seen in the text where Ross writes, “Space travel is hard physically; in addition, being isolated for a long period of time can be tough mentally” (Ross). It can be hard because people’s bodies would go through so many different changes. It could be hard mentally because Ross says, “So what happens to the body in space? For starters, muscles weaken and bones grow brittle” (Ross). Overtime, it might be enough to kill humans or make them so weak they couldn’t walk.

The book Packing for Mars by Mary Roach is mainly about the science behind how much a human body can take in space. Even though that seems expensive, NASA only uses about 0.5% of the Federal Budget. Space exploration should continue because of the advances it has given to society and the future. It has advanced technology, it provides future generations with necessary knowledge, it can help us with foreign relations, the crewed missions are more scientifically beneficial, and it increases availability for jobs.

This creates a very irregular pattern and the mind finds it hard to adapt. This results in lack of judgement, an inability to think straight and general irritation. A normal lifestyle is what helps you feel good: good hygiene, good food, nice hobbies, and visiting friends. In space, many of these things are not possible, which results in astronauts feeling worse and worse about themselves.
Space travel has it’s pros and cons. Many people have argued on why space exploration is a terrible idea, but others have disagreed on that. Jeffrey Kluger’s article “The perfectly Sane Case for Life in Space” shows some very extreme and pretty subtle ideas about space. Kluger goes into his article about living in space and shows that many astronauts have actually done it for over a year or a little under a year but he does say that after prolonged living in space the people that come back are usually fatigued or heavily plagued with sickness or sore muscles and bones. This is one of the major factors making people not want to take prolonged trips in space as well as it is holding back the use of space hotels and military installations in space. While in space these individuals are perfectly fine and in good health making most people that are for life in space think that if you go up there, then you stay up there as its a permanent choice otherwise you are possibly plagued with sickness and despair for the rest of your life if you come back down to earth.
Humans can expect to face some major challenges on an expedition to Mars. It has been proven that humanity can travel in space for over two years. Cumulatively, Sergei Constantinovich Krikalev, a Russian cosmonaut, has spent over eight-hundred and three days in Earth orbit (Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, 2005). The expedition to Mars would require the crew to endure a six month journey to the planet, a year of living on the planet, and a six months journey back to Earth. Russian cosmonaut, Valery V. Polyakoz, clocking in at four-hundred and thirty-eight days for just one stay in Earth orbit, shows humanity is capable of a twelve month round trip to Mars (Schwirtz, 2009). Earth's orbit has provided some benefits to space exploration, like the magnetic field from cosmic radiation, and the proximity to Earth if an emergency were to arise (Jones, 2009). The further humans travel away from Earth the greater the risks become. The major risks to human health on a flight to Mars, living on Mars, and returning to Earth are: radiation exposure, biological problems induced by weightlessness, spacecraft malfunctions, and psychological problems brought on by isolation.
