Although I’ve never worked a day in my life, I value the idea of work. My parents have always steered me away from work, in order for me to solely focus on school. Ever since joining Early College High School, my free time is limited. Being in both high school and college is extremely time-consuming, which doesn’t give me much of a choice but to focus only on school. Even though I don’t work, I think that there are many advantages in working while going to school. If my situation of being both in high school and college were different, working is something I would definitely attempt to do. Working while going to school helps with time management, budget-spending, and the chance to learn new things at work.

Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
But many low-income students not only have a full-time course schedule, they also have jobs where they work more than 30 hours per week. Approximately one-quarter of college students’ work while attending school and have both a full course-load and a full-time job (Carnevale, Smith, & Melton, 2015). Working helps students with the living costs as well as tuition and can help students learn skill sets that many employers prefer. However, there are problems with having full-time work while going to college.
Tuition costs are continually rising and more and more high school graduate are considering other options to earn their degrees. The most effective route for earning a degree is attending community college before completing a four year degree at a university. I recently had to make this decision myself. In the state of Ohio, community college classes are all transferable to universities (within the same state). Therefore, classes offered at community colleges for a fraction of the cost are guaranteed to be considered equivalent to university courses when considered for a student 's degree. There are three main areas we can see benefits to this method, the price difference, the convenience of taking classes locally, and the long term benefits,
College success has become a most desirable goal. However, many students struggle through college. In fact, according to the Website Ask.com, approximately 15 percent of college students receive a degree. Because I’m willing to earn a degree like many other successful students, I find that college is the stepping stone to my dream goals. I know that college is difficult, but I realize that attaining my dream of a college education will require me to understand the benefits of what I’m learning, to prepare for obstacles, to seek advice, and to create effective and reasonable strategies will help me achieve my goals.
Jayson Boyers stated that "having a college education can make big differences in some people 's lives" (The Huffington Post Newspaper, 2012). People who do college education often get high level and high paying jobs. The main reason for why students feel hesitant to attend college after they graduate from high school is because they worry about the price of schooling and they prefer to have a job instead to make fast money. Although, people who graduated from high school often are only able to receive jobs at fast food restaurants, clothing stores, etc. When people are able to earn more than enough money to have a stable life they are able to be less stress-free and enjoy their lives more. People who often work in retail jobs face the risk of not making enough money to buy food and also pay their rent. The money that people earn in retail jobs takes a very long time to save up in order to go to college. Alternatively, the world is very competitive and people, truthfully, do have trouble succeeding and even surviving day to day. The most recommended thing to do is to go to college after high school and take out a student loan if needed and pay it off when a career job is obtained. Working very hard now equals to a better life, job opportunities afterward, and positive friendships
Throughout my life the lessons I learned from watching my parents have stuck with me. I worked throughout my entire college career, and my junior and senior year I worked full time, not because I needed to but because that is what I wanted to do. I have a very hard time staying idle. I rarely sit still for longer than a couple hours. Today I work full time, go to graduate school part-time and volunteer a 20-30 hours a week for a dog rescue.
In most cases, that part-time job will only pay about half of it. The time a student spends working is not equal to the amount of time spent studying. It is hard for the students to catch up in class and in homework. The more time spent doing homework is less sleeping time, and can really affect a student's ability to get a good grade Additionally, having a job can cause some scheduling conflicts. For instance, a person is who is off the clock ten minutes before the class starts meanwhile your campus is an hour away.
It is very common that many high school students hold part time jobs while going to school. When these teens work, they are able to learn and experience life lessons from ethical and moral work. Knowing that school is aways and should be a priority, students should work while in high school because working helps students be more responsible with their lives, help them practice time managment, and also helps students see and experience the real world.
Statistic shows that you will be more likely to behave in healthier lifestyle such as not smoking if you attend college. And also college students have shown to be less obese within each age group, college-educated adults are less likely than others to be obese. In addition, children living in households with more educated parents are less likely than other children to be obese. All these things are a benefit because the healthier of a lifestyle you will have the longer and better life you will have. Going to college even if you are not majoring in a field related to like health or something college helps you see through a lot of propaganda and things like that. College allows you to think at another level where you will be able to analyze and think to make the better choice. I think that is one of the most important things that college can do for a student to help them think and figure out problems. Thinking and figuring out a problems is a skill that will last with students for the rest of their life and that skill can be applied in in their life and through the work field. Going to college also provide our society with more highly intellectual people. If college wasn’t important than police officer, nurses, and doctors wouldn’t need to go to college. That is not the case here to get these jobs you need to go to college to get these job because
As a matter of fact, there are some good benefits by going to college, “In Tyler Cowen view, “the wage differential between college graduates and high school graduates- the college premium- is growing.” In other words, Cowen believes that should help students understand about college degree is massively high paying and in the end, they won’t regret going to college. The more knowledge a person has, the more benefits the person will gain during the workforce experience. One of the good benefit is to stay strong connection to the
Nowadays in the era of globalization, students are encouraged to have work part-time that will create them to become more experienced in their future, teach them to become more independent and mature in real life. Although the students have enough money to pay their fees and able to accommodate the necessities of life but we totally agree that the working part-time should be encouraged because work part-time can give more benefits to students. According to King and Bannon (2002, p. 2), more than 50 percent of full-time students have jobs and “nearly 46% of all full-time employed students work 25 hours or more.” As students work more, they have less time to become engaged in campus life both inside and outside the classroom. Many students love to have part-time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the students nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the students are working part-time jobs and some have the intention to work. When we are in any fast food restaurant, supermarket or shop, there are must be school students who are working. Besides, students can gain a lot of experiences, students should be encouraged to work part-time because they can learn new skills and learn how to manage their financial properly.
