In the article “ Classes Without Walls ” it talks about how distance learning and how it could be an advantage or disadvantage to college students. Distance learning is a form of education which is mostly online or using technology to learn from a class. The assignments to write papers, post replies to talk about a topic and do a test and quizzes online. Most of the time class work are alone activity to make it easier. Online classes are built for the students to work at their own pace. There are much negative and a positive reason this class could benefit you or couldn 't. I am the worst multi-tasker because I get overwhelmed if there is more than I can handle and can not do more than one thing at a time. It would be nice to try out a distance learning class, but I know that staying on one task with a bunch of distraction will affect me. There are a bunch of different website and social media sites that people tend to go on instead of doing homework.Another reason the distance learning classes would be bad for people is because some people don 't study and if they don 't know an answer for a home test they could possibly look up the answers to get a better score, this could lead to them not actually knowing how to do anything in that class ,but how to look up the answers. I also think that online school is not a good for of learning because it is easier to work around other than rather than at home. Working with other can help you get a better intake on how they figure things out, to find a simple way of doing problems and also get help if needed. I enjoy interacting with classmates and meeting new people. I also enjoy going up to teacher just incase I have any problem with homework or understanding any new material. There are many negative and positves intakes about theses classes. Some of the positive reason that these class could benefit people are because some people have children or have busy work hour and will like to further their education. Another reason that distance learning is a good choice for people is because it works with flexible time periods and can work on your own pace. A negative reason for going to distance learning could be that one could feel as if they are isolated and not really communicating with much with your teachers and peers unless needed to.I belive that it all depends on how people take it because if they find a good one that will take credits torward their gpa they should go for
However, when a student takes an online class the student and professor are at a disadvantage of building an interpersonal relationship. For example, a professor is unable to read the nonverbal cues of a struggling student through a computer screen or is unable to tell if a student is experiencing a true emergency. Just as, a student is unable to read their professors nonverbal cues that a particular chapter or assignment is vital to passing the course. I have taken classes on campus and online classes for three semesters now and have learned that regardless of class format a student needs to be dedicated, structured, self-motivated and not afraid to ask questions. A disadvantage of taking an online class is if a web portal is not working properly.
In his article, “Can You Be Education from a Distance?”, James Barszcz effectively weighs the pros and cons of online education compared to the traditional method, while effectively supporting his position with factual information and statistics. While distance education proves to be convenient for students, Barszcz asserts that it eliminates valuable experiences necessary in order to get the most out of the material being learned.
I prefer online classes instead of face to face. Being a single mom online classes are much easier for me because I can do my assignments when my girls are sleeping.
There are many advantages to online learning, it affects the way people can learn. According to “Effects of Technology on Classrooms and Students”, “students have a greater willingness to write or work on computational skills”. “They say student like the immediate results of having online learning.” Another advantage is that students can learn at their own pace. With learning at their own pace they will be able to actually know the information well. If, they are in a regular classroom setting they may no...
...t miss out on a lot, they miss out on getting to know your classmates that could help you in the long run, it helps on social skills and being able to put yourself out there in front of others. Also being able to show your professor that you are passionate at what you want to do in life and that you’re great at it is a great feeling and if your professor knows that most of them are willing to help you achieve that goal. With getting your masters online you sit down for a couple of hours and get the work you have due done without really having than in class experience. If you’re trying to make a better life for yourself why take away all the benefits that come along with taking your masters in a in-class setting?
Most of the time, a student cannot learn at their own pace of the subject because the teacher has a schedule and other students so that student can easily fall behind or not feel as if they are learning. Also, if a student misses a class due to an illness or some other sort of reason they will get behind in classes, while with online class the student can still work while sick or the class will not move on without them. Some schools do not offer some classes that students wish to take. For example, some schools may not present a language class that the pupil wishes to take but online they have a better chance of being able to take that
Not all students can adapt to virtual learning, as students have to be good readers and the online program may lack the auditory support found in traditional classes. They also must be self-motivated and organized so as to keep track of their work and assignment due dates. Students wishing to take classes that require direct instruction and use of materials not available at home, such as science classes requiring lab work or cooking classes, may have to enroll in classes elsewhere. There has also been some concern “that students who are enrolled full-time in online public schools may suffer from a lack of opportunities for socialization, and consequently may fail to develop important social skills” (Sivin-Kachala & Bialo, 2009, p. 2). There are both pros and cons to virtual learning.
There are also many conveniences and benefits to taking an online class over a traditional, face-to-face class. Many students benefit logistically, financially, and from the course structure itself. Online classes provide the student with more opportunities to be successful in their coursework. Online courses can be completed based on the student's own schedule, provide for faster and less nervous interactions with instructors, and in many cases, are more educationally beneficial setting alternatives to traditional, face-to-face classes. In fact, Sixty-seven percent of academic professionals evaluated online courses as equivalent to as or better than face-to-face courses (Lytle).
For the students who do have a busy life, they might find it harder to attend a traditional classroom, so they have the option of taking online classes and making the classes fit around their time schedule. Another concern that some students might have is communication. Some students might not need to have a teacher in front of them and teach the course material to them, whereas some students might need the teacher teaching it to them.... ... middle of paper ...
I have never really been a traditional learner. Since around 1st grade I was in accelerated classes with 7th and 8th graders, and I loved the feeling of being in a more mature place of learning. I think being around people much older my whole life, being on my actual academic level seems slow and easy to me. This past year, I thought the solution to this would be to do online school full time, however I've come to miss the feeling of an actual classroom setting because I want to be a teacher in the future. Being in a class room setting and interacting with teachers furthers my career goals because I feel like I'm constantly gaining information on what I do and do not want to do as a teacher.
Online education, while offering clear advantages such as supporting a self-paced learning experience by allowing learning on an on-demand basis rather than a strict class schedule, also has significant drawbacks. Students in an online only course may struggle with structure and content without hands-on instruction, which can help motivate students who otherwise may be distracted or have difficulty working independently. The traditional structure of classroom education is effective, but also comes with a set of obstacles, particularly for nontraditional students. The best way to bridge this gap is hybrid education, which combines technology and personal interaction to support efficiency and self-paced learning while keeping students motivated, social, and connected to their professors and their peers through face to face interactions. While this newer learning model is still under investigation, there is evidence to prove that hybrid courses can lead to academic success.
According to Idea, online classes come in forms of quizzes, recordings of lectures, complete online books, etc. and can be accessed from anywhere at any time. Someone who is willing to put in the effort can get a degree without having to set foot on campus. Despite the flaws that come with online education such as the lack of physical interaction, Taso Lagos, the author of the article, "Pro: Are Online Courses Good for Higher Education," believes that online classes are for the better and provide different outlets than traditional school. He starts off by mentioning how the University of Washington is going to revolutionize the way they teach by partnering up with a higher group to give out free online classes.
As the economy has changed in the last ten years so has the schools budgets and they are looking for ways to keep costs down. There is much evidence that distance education can be more cost effective than traditional education. Everyone can save a substantial amount of money by going with an online education because schools would not need facilities and equipment. Schools would also save money by not needing to provide services and programs to students. Students would save by not needing to drive to and from school, buy school supplies, and they can earn a degree in half the time than a traditional school setting.
Furthermore, some may suggest that online learning is benefiting our students in society. There has been a breakthrough in time and geographical limitations of education via online courses (Ho, 2009). Online education is cost-effective, efficient, and easily accessible (Schmeeckle, 2003). Online classes are used for individual and independent learning in which the student can learn at their own pace (Gonzalez, 2009). Not only is online education beneficial for breaking down barriers, online education has the potential to help students learn material more efficiently. Students are more likely to seek help from their instructors when the material is taught online (Whipp & Lorentz, 2009). Computer use in statistical classes could help decrease math anxiety (Gundy, Morton, Liu, & Kline, 2006). In a study that measured online students’ ability to achieve the same efficiency of course material as face-to-face students, at least 98% of students reported that they had, so one may be lead to believe that online learning is just as efficient as face-to-face courses (Liebowitz, 2003). With all of the positive aspects of online education, one may wonder why there is any debate as to whether or not online education is beneficial for
Those who disagree with me think that online learning allows a student to learn at their own pace. Students are able to take the time to understand and figure out problems with the resources that are provided. The convenience of learning in an environment that is conducive to that particular students learning is provided by the student. If the student feels comfortable they are more apt
