City Year’s core values are important factors that every Corps Member should uphold. I believe that these ten values help Corps Members accomplish goals and guide us to help students succeed in school. The first core value is, service to a cause greater self. In my opinion, I feel that each Corps Member is constantly performing this value. Anyone that works for City Year is dedicating their time in order to help the students meet their academic goals and to help the communities grow. The second value that is implemented in the service we perform in schools is, students first, collaboration always. When working in City Year, students should be the main priority. In order to help the students, Corps Members work with teachers, school administrators, …show more content…
The fourth value is social justice for all. This value is fostered in City Year by decreasing the achievement gap and working everyday to promote educational equality. No matter what race, socioeconomic status, or religious background, students should be able to succeed in school. The fifth value that is implemented in the service we perform in schools is, Level Five leadership. The five qualities that are important to have when working with students, faculty, and other people from City Year are: humility, will, boldness, courage, and perseverance. The sixth value that is applied in City Year is having empathy. In order to work well with others or to gain their trust, empathy is needed. Empathy helps people understand others and build a strong rapport with others. The seventh value that is needed to integrate others is inclusivity. Each person brings something completely different to the group, for that reason everyone should be welcomed and have a chance to be actively involved in everything. The eighth value that is important to implement in City Year is …show more content…
The reason why I believe empathy is an important quality to have when working with others is because you get a chance to look at something through someone else’s perspective. When working with others or just listening to someone’s problems, empathy is needed in order to understand what a person is going through and gaining the person’s trust. When others see that you can feel the same way as him or her, they begin to open up. I noticed a big change when I began to empathize with others, not only did they feel comfortable being around me but they were able to talk to me about issues in their life. By having empathy and being there for the students, I learned that having empathy with students would help me to earn their trust and be able to help them with their
Value statements are being developed in schools which are used in their policies and their code of ethics. Many of these values reflect a broader value of restorative justice, which includes respect, truthfulness, dependability, self-control, self-discipline, acceptance, responsibility and accountability.
According to Arianna Huffington in the article “Empathy: What We Need Now”, during hardships and instability of society, empathy is needed to find solutions to those issues. Huffington writes about how empathy is needed in our country in order to produce a positive social change. She begins by giving an example of a movement that Martin Luther King created and how empathy was a part of this movement. King as well spoke of how empathy is the sign of living. To become involved in the situations of humanity in order to improve it, displays that empathy is the core of a human’s existence. After reading this article, I do agree with Huffington about how individuals need to fully understand and put themselves within the situation to fully comprehend the issue to solve.
Empathy is used to create change in the world by reaching out to the emotions of people and attending to them. It is used to help others learn and decide on matters that would not be reasonable without feelings attached to them. Empathy helps bring together communities that would have long ago drifted apart, but instead welcomed all who were different. Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This attribute of human-beings really allows us to not only attend to situations as if they were our own, but it allows us to feel most of what others feel because humans are very much alike in some ways. In many of the articles and novels that we have read this quarter, characters from different pieces of context have portrayed empathy whether it was toward
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. Compassion and empathy inspire change in a society whether it be changing individual’s usual way of thinking, uniting, or accepting those who are different. Individuals can use their compassion for something to cause a change in someone else’s thought of that thing. Several people have used empathy to bring others feelings together. People can also use empathy to show others to have acceptance towards ones who may not be like themselves.

I began by tutoring at the Boys and Girls Club (BGC) and eventually became a teacher at the boys and girls club. The focus of my continued volunteer work was to enrich the children’s after school experience whether they needed help with homework or busy work. During my volunteer work the issue that stuck out in my mid continuously was social class or classism. The BGC emphasizes many different issues and points such as “creating aspirations for the future,” “Helping youth become responsible, caring citizens and acquire skills for participating in the democratic process is the main thrust of these programs and also to develop leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning, decision-making.” BGC encourages kids to engage in healthy and positive behavior as well as to help the youth build and discover creativity in the arts “Club programs help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills.” (bgca.org)
I currently work as a home-based ABA Therapist. I provide early intervention services for children between the ages of one and five who are diagnosed with Autism. I truly believe that working with individuals with disabilities is a calling. My long-term goal is to become a school counselor. There are various skills that are required to be an effective counselor. However, the first trait that came to my mind that I possess is empathy. Counselors help students through stressful pivotal times of their lives. I feel as though I have a natural ability to feel what other people are feeling. Empathy provides the opportunity for students to feel understood. Frequently, while working as an ABA therapist, I enter a family’s life soon after receiving
There was a situation which could have ended poorly for me if I didn’t have examples of empathy. Two of my best friends, Nicole and Kenzie, were in a fight when I found caught myself in middle trying not to cause drama. We had all attended a graduation party soon after their fight and I was spending more time with Nicole than Kenzie. Later that day, I received a text for Kenzie saying “Why were you acting so weird to me today?” Instead of telling her that I enjoyed being with Nicole and causing a scene, I showed empathy. I told her there was no weirdness but most importantly I told her I was sorry she felt that way. There was a miscommunication between us but I showed her compassion during an emotional and sensitive time. In A Walk to Remember, Landon misinterpreted Jamie but shows compassion towards her in the end. Just like Kenzie and I, there was a miscommunication between the two characters. To resolve both issues, there would need to be conversing. In both scenarios, it caused a better relationship among them and less tension. The one difference between them is that in the book it caused a romantic relationship. “She smiled at me and I smiled at her and all I could do was wonder how I'd ever fallen in love with a girl like Jamie Sullivan.”
Another reason that individuals engage in these helping behaviors is that they have Empathy for others. The term Empathy refers to a persons ability to understand the needs and feelings of other people because they share in those feelings. And for sometime Empathy has been considered a significant factor in promoting positive behavior towards others.
...tion needed to succeed in the school. In experimental studies, urban schools that use service learning as a curriculum guideline have seen attendance and test scores rise while behavior issues subside. Laws, such as No Child Left Behind, that threaten failing schools with punitive penalties if test scores do not meet a standard are fueling the growing pandemic that is the failing urban schools of the United States. It must be understood that education in the public school system cannot be solved with an old fashioned cookie cutter approach; not all schools should be treated the same. The fact is all schools are unique because they are filled with individuals stemming from their own unique cultural background. Motivation and personalization is key; by tapping into their interests and lifestyle, teachers can bridge the gap between success and repeated failure.
The dictionary definition of Empathy is the psychological identification with or vicarious experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and attitudes of others. Simply put, empathy is the ability to step into someone else’s shoes, be aware of their feelings and understand their needs. In the workplace, empathy can show a deep respect for co-workers and show that you care, as opposed to just going by rules and regulations. An empathic leadership style can make everyone feel like a team and increase productivity, morale and loyalty. Empathy is a powerful tool in the leadership belt of a well-liked and respected executive (Pressley, 2012).
Parents and community members want to know that their contributions towards the campus are valued and appreciated. Many times we take for granted those events occurring around us. It is crucial we express gratitude towards those people investing in increasing student achievement. Stakeholders want to feel accepted and worthy in their contributions to the campus. In addition, communities are made up of different types of culture, race and income status making the culture diverse which may act as a barrier in creating a positive atmosphere. Yet, this type of misunderstanding can be avoided by simply asking questions in a respectful manner. School leaders must make parent and community involvement a priority, valuing and accepting each other’s differences. “Schools provide wonderful opportunities to bring together students, families, educators and other community members to build the collaborative partnerships that promote quality educational, recreational, and social opportunities for all citizens” (Lechtenberger and Mullins, 2004, p. 21). Schools, parents and community members must work together to support all students in a learning environment to ensure every student is a successful lifetime
My core educational values define what I believe is necessary tools students need to be successful. Such values are provided by the community of people (educators, parents, business partners) who touch the students’ lives. I value knowledge because without awareness of specific content, students are not able to truly feel a part of society. I value development of skills in order for students to apply their knowledge. When skills are applied, students demonstrate their knowledge and ability to function in our current world. I value critical thinking in our students so they can extend their knowledge and skills to solve complex problems benefitting our present and future. I value citizenship and feel that education has a responsibility to model and nurture character qualities in our students. Educating students is raising them equipped with tools that will enable them to function as contributing participants in a productive society. Knowledge, skills, critical thinking, and citizenship are educational values at the core of developing a student ready for the world’s challenges.
Indeed, lack of empathy actually results in poor behaviours. This is when people behave abrasively or arrogantly with others with whom they do not empathise. Peter Drucker rightly said “Good manners are the lubricating oil of organisations.” And empathy is the source of such good manners. The leader who lacks empathy cannot realistically expect to understand the needs of people and develop them. People who lack this skill also miss political overtones in the environment which makes empathy an especially useful skill for people who work very closely with the
Empathy also assists me to be helpful to my workmates. If I put their feelings at heart, I will manage to assist them when need be. They could have problems not only at the work place but also in their social life. This may be a hindrance to their productivity at work. In this case I can step in on their behalf. By being helpful to my patien...
