As in the early years indigenous people had their live built up until Anglo Americans stole from the Indians. They did in fact take away their culture, values and way of life. Not only did they take that away, they also took away their privilege they killed and destroyed hundreds of their people and for what? So that European can expand their way of living. Although, westward expansion created opportunities for settlers to acquire land, they were also wondering whether slavery would be allowed into the new states such as Native Americans. Additionally, as settlers spread westward, Indigenous people were pushed off their lands and violently suppressed. These people and their heirs, were earmarked by race, language, and culture. They were not incorporated as full and equal citizens. “Instead, they were consistently discriminated against as a people, and forged by expanding American capitalism into a distinct oppressed nationality.” According to Carrigan once they were established into their new home they were kicked out of their own land and targeted as low class. “Chicanos suffer the highest unemployment, the lowest per capita income, the worst education, the highest functional illiteracy rate, the highest death rate, occupy the most dilapidated and overcrowded housing, and have less political representation in local, state, or national government than any other nationality in the population of the Southwest and perhaps in the nation.” Even today Chicanos suffer, it still exit in today’s society discriminated and bully among others. The time has changed with Chicanos education and unemployment has increased their numbers. For many of us immigrated we are trying our best to graduated college and receive a better lifestyle then our ancestors. As a result, we have to break the silence and defend ourselves because we are human and we should deserve same equally as anyone else.
