Recommended: Jazz music concert experience

The live performance I went to is the West County High School Winter Concert. It started at 7:00 p.m. and ended a little after 8:00 p.m. First the Jazz Band played, then the Concert Choir, then the Concert Band, and finally the Swing Choir sang and danced. The Jazz Band was very good. The first song they played was “Dashing Through the Snow!” arranged by Clark. The second song was “Solitude” by Ellington. The third song was “Splanky” by Hefti. The last song they played was “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” arranged by Lewis. The Concert Choir performed next and sounded very nice. The first song they sang was “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen” arranged by Kern. The second song was “Ding! Dong! Merrily on High” arranged by Burrows. The third song

    The play I went to see was The Music Man performed by the Mesa Encore Theatre at the Mesa Community College. I saw this performance on November 20th. The main performers in this play were Zac Bushman as Harold Hill and Lauren Koeritzer as Marian Paroo. Alongside them, a mix of both adults and children as young as 8 acted in this production. The cast and crew used appropriate clothing to match the time and place. Lights were utilized scarcely, with not much more than spotlights or front and back lights. The set was extravagant, cute, and fitting for the setting and time. Overall, this musical was vibrantly performed and left me with positive impressions regarding presentation and production.

    The live theatrical production I chose to see was 9 to 5 The Musical. The production was performed by Fayetteville Technical Community College’s very own Fine Arts Department. The musical is based on the film released by Fox in 1980. Collin Higgins adapted the film from the book 9 to 5 written by Patricia Resnick. It wasn’t until 2008 that the film was adapted to a theatrical production. The production was originally brought to broadway by Robert Greenbait and Dolly Parton wrote the lyrics and the music for the Musical. The run on broadway was very short but the production later toured in other countries around the around the world.

    The concert began with an incredibly brief introduction from the president of the Rochester Oratorio Society, after which the society performed a piece that is not listed on the program. After hearing the raw talent the choir displayed in their first performance the crowd praised them, and at this time a representative from the city’s mayor office took the stage and presented the society with a proclamation. The proclamation was on behalf of the city offices and expressed thanks for their 70 years of musical performances and education. Afterwards the society performed Norman Dello Joio’s “A Jubilant Song,” which served as a transition for the Houghton College Choir to take the seats of the men’s choral section. The college choir was approximately a third the size of the society choir, but still managed to perform with a lot of talent. The Houghton College Choir performed Kenneth Jennings’ “The Lord is the Everlasting God” and Larry Farrow’s “Give Me Jesus.” After a quick intermission the Rochester Oratorio Society took to the stage to perform Brahm’s Requiem, which is typically performed with an orchestra, but in their rendition a two person piano served as a replacement.     The rest of the trumpet section was also very lively; I felt they carried the main theme in almost every song which certainly kept me interested in the performance. The conductor kept the band on time, and to me they never missed a beat. One could tell they were certainly well rehearsed and truly knew how to use their instruments. A lot of music these days has become focused on generating the catchiest lyrics or chorus, so seeing this jazz ensemble was very refreshing. I was delightfully surprised to see such remarkable music talent at a performance of that size and caliper.

    The cd starts with the song "Strike up the Band " performed by Oscar Peterson. The piece consists of a piano, cello. This song in my opinion sets the mood of the cd. It represents pure jazz music without the vocals. When i close my eyes and listen to this song I picture a club from the 1940's with jazz music and people dancing around. The second song, "Summertime", a very famous jazz piece performed by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, starts with a horn and an orchestra in the back. The lyrics of the song talks about a slaved woman, looking over her workers child. "Summertime" is sort of a lullaby song. Louis Armstrong's performance in this song is very well done; I really enjoyed his vocals. I also noticed the use of violins in this piece. The song ends with a duet with both of the singers together.

    On Wednesday, May 23rd, I attended the College Choir concert in the Reamer Campus Center. The choir performed a variety of songs, ranging from pieces in Latin to traditional American folksongs. Two of the pieces featured solos, and one even featured percussion instruments. Mrs. Elinore Farnum provided piano accompaniment for each of the songs, and performed beautifully. I was extremely impressed by the talented choir members and their ability to sing such a varied range of songs.
