Why do people lose hope when things do not go their way? In the story Jayber

Crow by Wendell Berry the story tells about a man named Jayber Crow who is in love with

someone who does not love him back. He spent a long time trying to understand how it could

be. Jayber is going down a road of heartbreak and loss because he loses his barbershop, family

and his home. Jayber is a very depressive state. Jayber has a heart murmur and he feels like he

cannot fight for his country. Jayber goes through so much in his life dealing with love he has for

Mattie. Love loss and hope has made Jayber have a rough life.

oh yes; i do “you love her enought to be a faithful husband to her think

what you’re saying now. You’te proposing ti be the faithful husband of a women who is already

married to an unfaithful husband? Yes thats why if she has an unfaithful husband, then she needs

a faithful one’’ [pg#242] This just goes to show you much Jayber really and truly loves Mattie if

he is married to her in his mind. Even through she is married he still love her as if they have been

togather their whole life. Jayber love for mattie seem to be forever.


Jayber is in a place where he think their is no hope. He tries and tries to overcome his

This statement shows that if you hurt or been throught enough that things can come to the

light and you will know what you are truly put here to do. People lose what they had to ispier

them. That can really and truly hurt them. Jatber still has hope through all he:s went throught the

loving of mattiehe had hope for her. The lose of his parents he still had hope.


Jayber is trying to overcome his fear of loss. It seems Jayber is taking many hits espectionly

Jayber not being able to go to the army and fight for his country. Like he always wanted to and

thet really brought jayber to the end of the road. With in taking those losses Jayber has found

himself in a place where he has but himself in a box. Lossing the barbershop hurt Jayber, that

barbershop gave the men and young men of that town a place to come even if they wasn’t getting

a haircut. Jayber has loss so much like the life of his parents and his ‘I rember sitting in my

mothers lap in the rocking chair beside the kitchen stove and the sound of her voice singing in
