Why do people lose hope when things do not go their way? In the story Jayber
Crow by Wendell Berry the story tells about a man named Jayber Crow who is in love with
someone who does not love him back. He spent a long time trying to understand how it could
be. Jayber is going down a road of heartbreak and loss because he loses his barbershop, family
and his home. Jayber is a very depressive state. Jayber has a heart murmur and he feels like he
cannot fight for his country. Jayber goes through so much in his life dealing with love he has for
Mattie. Love loss and hope has made Jayber have a rough life.

oh yes; i do “you love her enought to be a faithful husband to her think
what you’re saying now. You’te proposing ti be the faithful husband of a women who is already
married to an unfaithful husband? Yes thats why if she has an unfaithful husband, then she needs
a faithful one’’ [pg#242] This just goes to show you much Jayber really and truly loves Mattie if
he is married to her in his mind. Even through she is married he still love her as if they have been
togather their whole life. Jayber love for mattie seem to be forever.
Jayber is in a place where he think their is no hope. He tries and tries to overcome his
fears of the things jayber has been through. During this time jayber get by and get

This statement shows that if you hurt or been throught enough that things can come to the
light and you will know what you are truly put here to do. People lose what they had to ispier

Jayber is trying to overcome his fear of loss. It seems Jayber is taking many hits espectionly
Jayber not being able to go to the army and fight for his country. Like he always wanted to and
thet really brought jayber to the end of the road. With in taking those losses Jayber has found
himself in a place where he has but himself in a box. Lossing the barbershop hurt Jayber, that
barbershop gave the men and young men of that town a place to come even if they wasn’t getting
a haircut. Jayber has loss so much like the life of his parents and his ‘I rember sitting in my

He went to cut Athey hair and shave his facial hair when needed. The love her had for her was unexplainable and unjustifable , she was the person he really want. “ You and I will be forever, just don’t nobody knows.” Jayber had a feeling that Mattie and him will always be married in his head but that was only his imagination. He had always wanted to be with her since they were little kids, he fell in love with her walking home from school having a conversation. Mattie look at Jayber as a friend who she can depend on, but Jayber did not see it that way. “ Mattie was a grown woman in love, and they had to let her go, with their blessings, enduring what could not be helped.” This shows that Mattie was in love with Troy even though he did mess up, and she still loves him, but Jayber will always love her. Jayber is so indeterminate in love with her, he went to shave Athey whenever she needs him to, when Athey got sick real bad and could not do it himself. Jayber cared for the people he knew, so he did what they wanted him

Jonas decides to leave and change the lives of his people so that they can experience the truth. “The Giver rubbed Jonas’s hunched shoulders… We’ll make a plan” (155). Their plan involves leaving sameness and heading to Elsewhere, where Jonas knows the memories can be released to the people. He has a connection with Gabe, a special child who has experienced the memories, unlike the rest of the community. Jonas has a strong love for Gabe, and he longs to give him a better life. “We’re almost there, Gabriel” (178). Even with a sprained ankle, Jonas keeps pushing forward because he wants everyone to experience what The Giver has given him. He wants them to have a life where the truth is exposed. His determination allows him to make a change for a greater future in his community. This proves that Jonas has the strength to change his community for the
