Weinberg's A Designer Universe
The phenomenon of the creation of the universe has baffled many for some time. The question of whether or not a designer/God put together this most intricate world in a personal quest or project leaves many in great debate. Was life brought about by some evolutionary feat? Or, in opposition, did an intelligent being create life with perfection in mind? Both questions can be answered in many different ways. Steven Weinberg, writer of A Designer Universe, offers his thoughts, through abduction, regarding the likelihood of a designer creating the universe.
Such an abduction, in which Weinberg expresses his opinion, relies on premises or declarative statements that the conclusion proves most unsurprising, or to the best explanation. An example of such an argument would be: (premises) A trunk provides support, Branches and leaves make up it’s body, leaves change color with the seasons…(conclusion) “It” must be a tree. The conclusion makes the premises most unsurprising. One would guess that if “It” must be a tree, all of the premises would exist.
Weinberg offers two excellent arguments against the Design Theory. This theory suggests that if a “designer” created the universe it would thus be perfect. In particular, I will explain William Paley's view supporting the design argument and Bertrand Russell's view against the design argument. After a presentation of the differing views, I will then evaluate the arguments to show that William Paley has a stronger argument.

William Paley and David Hume’s argument over God’s existence is known as the teleological argument, or the argument of design. Arguments from design are arguments concerning God or some type of creator’s existence based on the ideas of order or purpose in the universe. Hume takes on the approach of arguing against the argument of design, while Paley argues for it. Although Hume and Paley both provide very strong arguments, a conclusion will be drawn at the end to distinguish which philosopher holds a stronger position. Throughout this essay I will be examining arguments with reference to their work from Paley’s “The Watch and the Watchmaker” and Hume’s “The Critique of the Teleological Argument”.
After Sir Charles Darwin had introduced his original theory about the origins of species and evolution, humanity’s faith in God that remained undisputed for hundreds of years had reeled. The former unity fractured into the evolutionists, who believed that life as we see it today had developed from smaller and more primitive organisms, and creationists, who kept believing that life in all its diversity was created by a higher entity. Each side introduced substantial arguments to support their claims, but at the same time the counter-arguments of each opponent are also credible. This is the debate of Intelligent Design (ID) and Evolution. The main debating question of many scholars being, "Is the universe self-contained or does it require something beyond itself to explain its existence and internal function?".
The existence of God or rather an intelligent being with define abilities has been a contentious issue of discussion since time immemorial. There are as many people advocating for divinity in the creation of the universe as there are people doubting the existence of this Supreme Being with unique and really frightening capabilities who designed and created the universe. Among the chief advocates of the thought of the existence of God and perfect order in the creation of the universe is William Paley. William Paley brings forth among the best arguments ever brought forward advocating for the existence of God and the nature in which the universe is bordered as sufficient evidence of the existence of this divine being responsible for the materialization of the universe and its exact design. William Paley begins his argument by talking about a scenario, which involves him walking along a path. “During his walk he hits his leg on a rock but pays very little attention to the rock” (Paley, 2000, p.12). This is because at the back if his mind he knows that the rock has been there for a very long time verging on forever. William Paley creates an alternate scenario with him walking down the same path. In this alternate scenario he just so happens to hit his leg on a watch. The reaction to the watch is very different from the reaction to the rock. William Paley says that this disparity to the watch in comparison to the rock is caused by purpose. Thus William Paley introduces the concept of telos. Telos means purpose. It is a term that refers to the exact purpose of a given object in the universe and exactly how this purpose relates to the object as well as the level of perfection and prowess to which this object in question fulfill...
If there is anyone that impacted the art world the most it would be Giotto, but one would ask why Giotto is relevant when discussing Renaissance work. The answer is, if it was not for Giotto’s ingeniousness no one knows how long it would have taken artists to figure out linear or atmospheric perspective. The Greeks themselves with all of their breakthroughs in art couldn’t figure out what it is this man figured out. It is because of Giotto that artists were able to raise their work to a higher level of realism. One would think that realism would be important, especially during a time when humanism seems to be the driving force of art.

The parents and other close relatives start the stereotyping first. If a couple is having a girl, they will paint the baby’s room pink, purple or some other feminine color. However, a boy’s room would most likely be blue, green, red, or something more masculine. The couple is already stereotyping their baby based on gender before he or she is already born. Colors have become popular symbols for genders. For example, I work at the Hy-Vee bakery, and I often get told that a customer wants their cake to have boy or girl colors.
