The source I have selected for my research paper is an article published by The Chicago Daily Tribune on September 4, 1912 entitled “Real Progressivism.” The article described Progressive movement as an idea of genuine human betterment, carrier of measures, national, state and municipal, for the protection of the health and efficiency of people, as well as conservation of people’s health and strength. One main goal of the Progressive movement was to end corruption in government by revealing and undermining corrupted political machines and their bosses and making policies that are relevant to direct democracy. The article outlined some of the major weaknesses of the country during the year of 1912, and mentioned few examples of American
life conditions that require improvement and some progress. The article has sensationalized the wasteful practices of businesses as well as businessmen who profited from illegal and unfair business practices. The question of the land policy was also discussed, and the attitude of the article was quite negative toward the fallacies and illogical theories that were in use before the rise of the progressivism. The Tribune’s possible solution to the social dilemma of the American community is to involve the Progressive Party in developing proper machinery through which only Progressives would implement more logical policies. The ultimate goal of those policies is to allow departments of health care, health services, and national insurance to function in order to improve the lives of the people. The following statement is my thesis for the research paper: Although progressivism tried to end widespread corruption during the 1900’s, there are relentless dilemmas that can be found in some of its reforms such as corrupted politicians who did not really believed in direct democracy, long work hours, and poor structure of intellectual exercise and education that were established during the Progressive Era. I will argue that the Chicago Daily Tribune’s article overestimates the effectiveness and efficiency of the Progressive Party while denying its disadvantages. I have always been interested in the topic of the Progressive movement, from my knowledge it was very influential in American history from the year of 1900 to 1920, and I wanted to know why it was so significant during this specific time. I am eager to learn more about the Progressive movement, more specifically about its weak sides. I would like to research more on why and what motivated so–called muckrakers criticizing and sensationalizing issues on big businessmen, how some of the reforms failed due to progressivism and how progressivism has failed in fighting for equal rights for minority races.
Cities and industry grew in growth on the first of January in 1900 which created an influx of the high classes. Andrew Carnegie is a factory owner who was about to sell his steel company, but ended up becoming one of the richest man in the world. However, there was an underside of this whole excitement to earn money and the hope of the American dream. Average earnings were less than $500 a year, but in the unskilled southern workers earned an average of $300 a year. The work hours were 60 hours a week, wages were strained, and horrible child labor. The question is what was the most important problems in America during the early 1900s that needed to be addressed by The Progressive Movement. There are three main reasons: the struggling child labor, women’s voting rights, and

In the late 1800’s a group of Americans decided that something needed to be done about the decline of moral and ethical values in most Americans. These people called themselves the progressives and started one of the most comprehensive reform movements in the United States to this day. Progressivism became so widespread that by the end of World War I, anyone who didn’t agree with Progressive ideals was labeled a communist. The Progressives had four major goals that they wished to accomplish. These four goals were to democratize America, to Americanize America, the humanization of capitalism and rationalization of the economy. Each goal dealt with a different aspect of America’s society that the Progressives thought needed help. The way these goals were accomplished was to get laws passed that would reform the practices of many Americans. Progressives held that in order to bring American back to its old time, rural values people would need to attend church more.
The term Progressivism implies a philosophy that promotes change/reform in the current political, economic, and social aspects of society while conservatism stresses gradual change in society but promotes tradition rather than change. The Progressive movement from 1901 to 1917 worked to improve aspects of society that grew out of problems which occurred during the Industrial Age. The goals of the "Progressives" were to stop monopolies, corruption, inefficiency and social injustices. Both progressive acts and amendments were being passed to deal with social ills, corruption in politics and corporate America. The period from 1901-1917 was more a victory for liberalism, mainly "modern liberalism", than a triumph of conservatism due to the fact that multiple reform movements were occurring in this era changing political, economic, and social aspects in society to protect the rights of the common man.
In the beginning of the twentieth century, the economy was booming, new technology flourished. The rapid industrialization brought achievement to the United States, however, it also caused several social problems. Wealth and power were concentrated in the hands of a few, and poverty and political corruption were widespread. As people became aware of these problems, a new reform group was created. Unlike populism, which had been a group of farmers grown desperate as the economy submerged into depression, the new reform movement arose from the educated middle class. These people were known as the progressives. The Progressive Movement was a movement that aimed at solving political, economic, and social problems. The Progressives were people from the middle class who had confidence that they could achieve social progress through political reform. The Progressives sought after changes and improvements in the society through laws and other federal actions.

After looking closely at all four documents, the Progressive Era ended child labor, improved working conditions, and brought victory to women suffrage. Goals of the movement and people who took part in it have also been highlighted. It is concluded that Progressivism movement was effective and changing American values and lifestyles.
Reform provides permanent programs to avoid another depression and to protect citizens against an economic disaster. The Progressive Movement which targeted urban complications, there was a massive disparity between the wealthy and the poor and the goal was to bring equality into the nation. The movement aimed towards removing corruption and including American citizens into the political process. Additionally, to encourage the government to solve the social issues that were occurring in the late 1800’s and early 20th century, all while balancing impartial treatment into the economic matters.
Where did some of modern America's issues originate from? The answer to that is the Progressive Era. The Legislation of that era laid all of the groundwork for today, and much of it is still in public debate today. Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson, three of the presidents from that era, all played roles in the groundwork. These presidents passed acts, tariffs, and amendments that are still with us, and debated today.

Reformers known as Progressives attempted to undo the problems caused by industrialization. The Progressive movement sought to end the influence of large corporations, provide more rights and benefits to workers, and end the control possessed by party leaders. At the national level, Progressivism centered on defeating the power of large businesses. The Progressive Era was a period in American history in which improving working conditions, exposing corruption, improving the way of life, expanding democracy, and making reforms were the objectives at hand. With the emergence of the Progressive Era, two important figures gradually emerged as well.
During the Progressive Era, occurring from 1890 until 1920, progressives attempted to make many changes at a national level and were characterized by support for economic, social, and political reforms. By realizing the rapid industrial growth, poor class, and immigration, progressive’s goals were to relieve these issues and create laws that gave the common people more power. Progressive reformers gave significance to issues of black rights and also to women suffrage, however these issues had proved to be forgotten by Woodrow Wilson, whom of which was the president during this time. Although the reformers were not successful with these two issues, they seemed to be successful in improving much of the other negativity that had occurred during this era including the working conditions of the meat industry, child labor laws, and by changing the competition from large companies. In the end, all of these proved that the reformers turned out to be very successful in bringing reform to a national level. Along with these issues that the progressives tried to stop competition, they also fought many groups that tried to eliminate social classes along the way. Progressives were able to be successful in restoring economic competition, making the government more efficient, and stemming the tide of socialism.

The Progressive Era brought a lot of changes to the United States, some were good and made a positive impact, others negative. Prohibition is one of the things that came from the Progressive Era that was in the middle and could be positive or negative. How you feel about it really depends on your personal feeling towards alcohol and the effects of drunkenness on society. For me I feel like there were other ways to cut back on the drunkenness of that time. I understand that the reasoning for attempting to outlaw the production, distribution and sale in alcohol but at the end the people still found way to get there hands on it.
The Industrial Revolution created many problems that needed to need to be solved. Poor working conditions, corruption, long drinking hours and discrimination were part of the problem. The Progressive Movement was created to solve these unfair rules and policies. The Movement fixed the problems of Industrialization by reforming laws.
