Malibu Boat’s, which is located in Loudon, Tennessee, has been a manufacturer in recreational towboats, since 1982. Six friends, who all loved and practically lived for waterskiing, decided they wanted to start building their own ski boats in a small shop in Merced, California. Robert Alkema started up the new organization and chose the company’s name, “Malibu Boats”. At his age he was still young enough where he thought there were no obstacles that could get in his way and didn't think his plan could ever fail him. During the first year of operation, Malibu only built two boats per week using a single-hull design on each boat. Under Alkema’s management the company, each employee was entitled to their own opinion on what should or should not go on Malibu’s boats. Due to that he let them prove their point on their thoughts and each employee at the time got to basically design their own boat at the time and then they would vote if it was good enough to put on the production line to be made. At that point in time there were still only about ten people working for the company. By 1984, Malibu had repaid its initial loan on the company and was starting to build over 400 boats a year. Alkema had the company making a profit in just over two years. Since Malibu was completely debt free, the company was able to work outside the original limitations of the boat building industry. “The Boat”, narrated by a Mid-western university professor, Alistar MacLeod, is a short story concerning a family and their different perspectives on freedom vs. tradition. The mother pushes the son to embrace more of a traditional lifestyle by taking over the fathers fishing business, while on the other hand the father pushes the son to live more autonomously in an unconstrained manner. “The Boat” focuses on the father and how his personality influences the son’s choice on how to live and how to make decisions that will ultimately affect his life. In Alistair MacLeod’s, “The Boat”, MacLeod suggest that although dreams and desires give people purpose, the nobility of accepting a life of discontentment out weighs the selfishness of following ones own true desires. In the story, the father is obligated to provide for his family as well as to continue the fishing tradition that was inherited from his own father. The industry started a major growth phase in the late 1960s and early 1970s achieving more than 2,100 percent growth. The early goal of the cruise industry was to develop a mass market since cruising was until then an activity for the elite. A way to achieve this was through economies of scale as larger ships were able to accommodate more customers as well as to create additional opportunities for onboard sources of revenue. The global growth rate of the cruise industry has been enduring and stable, at around 7% per year in spite of economic cycles of growth and recession. For instance, the financial crisis of 2008-2009 has not impacted the demand for cruises. This underlines that the industry has been so far fundamentally supply based; the ships are built and the customers are found to fill them through various marketing and discounting strategies.
Throughout time, the progression and evolution of snowboarding has increased greatly. It has gone from non existence in the late 1970’s, to one of the most watched action sports in a matter of thirty-five years. The upward takeoff and popularity of snowboarding relies on two people, Jake Burton and Shaun White. Jake Burton back in 1977 had the vision for what snowboarding would be, but Shaun White had what it took to manifest that vision. Evidence has shown that time brings change in sports, history has repeated itself with snowboarding, this history reflects the time & changes that has occurred in America.
Through out his tenure at Sunbeam,Al Dunlap’s advocated profit by firing many employees and shutting down many factories.If we look at it in the short term ,this approach seems very attractive as it brings in quick short term gains.In the long term ,however, such a decision would not ensure the sustainability of the company. Profitability and responsibility can and should be combined in an ideal world, however it is clear that they are at least partially contradictory. Shareholder pressure should not force a company to make short-term decisions that might be detrimental to the long-term profitability of the company.
Bjorn Ericksen and his team have embarked on a long and expensive project designed to help them win the next Whitbread World Sailboat Race. Using the above proposed plan, the team should be well prepared to design, build and sail their vessel to victory. Although they are certain to experience setbacks, problems and delays, having a priority matrix, a project network, and a Gantt chart will provide a solid plan that will easily keep their project on track. Once they have finished the race and reviewed their performance, defending their championship will become next year's objective.
A tone readers clearly find in “The Open Boat” by Stephen Crane, is loneliness. That particular tone is easily seen when; a group of four men are in a ten foot dinghy with nothing to either their north, south, east, or west except the water around their position. “The men seem to recognize that they are helpless in the face of nature. Their lives could be lost at any moment by the most common of natural phenomena: a wave, a current, the wind, a shark, or even simple starvation and exposure. The men are at the mercy of mere chance.” (Open Boat). With that specific thought out in the open, an adventure for the readers is finding the mysterious special tone behind the short story. But the always-present twinkle in Fred's eye was ever so slightly diminished today, and I knew why: he feared that his intuition might be mistaken and that I might not, after all, take to today's activity. His concern was compounded by weather; it was far from ideal for this, my first sail. Why was it so important to him that I like sailing anyway?
A second strategy that has been rejected is one concerned with the consumer awareness of SGC. Currently, SGC is only advertising to travel agencies. Coupled with segmentation, SGC’s current advertising strategy has hurt SGC in the sense that consumer awareness is considerably low. Only a small portion of the population even knows that Sea Goddess exists. SGC is only targeting those who travel frequently. They may want to target the portion of the population that wants to travel, but is unsure of where to go or what to do. In order for SGC to reach the consumer, new efforts must be made in the advertising plan. Mere travel agency recommendations are not going to be enough to keep SGC alive in the marketplace. Other vehicles are going to be necessary to spread SGC’s message about the luxuries and benefits of this extraordinary cruise.
