Research Paper (Water Quality in Your State)
I will be writing my research paper on the subject of “Water Quality in Your State” which is Nevada with a concentration on the water quality in the Las Vegas region. I will present the importance of water, its source in Nevada, the pros and con on the water quality in the state of Nevada and analyze both sides in detail. The quality of water in Nevada is a very important subject. All life on planet Earth has some connection to water. Whether it being drinking water for survival, eating animals who depend on water, or using water in some way to grow. All life on this planet has some connection to it.
Humans depend on water for survival and it is a very important part of our daily lives.

“Hard Water” has naturally occurring minerals in it, which is composed of nontoxic minerals that are dissolved in the water. “Hard Water” is primarily calcium and magnesium, which is why it leaves white residue on your showerheads and faucets (Southern Nevada Water Authority”Hard Water”). One of the cons of the water quality in Nevada is that majority of all the water used in Nevada is gathered form rivers and lakes. Since Nevada is an arid climate, it is naturally lacking water. Not only do Nevadans have to worry about the water level of there primary sources of water, but they must worry about organisms living in those sources of water. These organisms can contaminate water and make it harder to cleanse them out, they can clog the water treatment filters that water treatment centers use. Lake Mead is one such primary water sources in Nevada that has both water quality and level problems (Karla Lant). Another con to Nevada’s drinking water is that water can sometimes be more corrosive than the materials that help them circulate through the water systems, which leads to elevated levels of lead and copper in the water. Older chrome and brass pipes can contain lead in them which when corroded is how the lead is introduced into the water (Nevada Division of Environmental Protection). Corrosion happens for many types of reasons which include pH of the water, oxygen in the water, the chemicals in the water, temperature, and velocity at which the water is traveling (Smith-Boughan Mechanical Services). The Bureau of Safe Drinking Water (NDEP) oversees the overall protection of the public when it comes to safe drinking water, which includes lead, copper and other contaminates (Nevada Division of Environmental Protection). There are 598 public water systems according to the State and Federal regulations data. When a water

About 80% of the State’s surveyed freshwater rivers and streams have good water quality that fully supports aquatic life uses, 17% have fair water quality that partially supports aquatic life uses, and 3% have poor water quality that does not support aquatic life uses. Ten percent of the surveyed rivers do not fully support swimming. The major sources of impairment are agriculture (responsible for 53% of the impaired river miles), urban runoff (responsible for 16%), and construction (responsible for 13%). These sources generate siltation, bacteria, and organic wastes that deplete disssolved opxygen.
Such is the condition of Texas waterways. The surging population in Texas, the numerous pharma, chemical and oil industries, landowners, farmers and other residents have been recklessly using water. Water is a limited resource and our best efforts in recycling, reusing and conserving water have not yielded the desired results. Climatic changes over the past few decades may have resulted in unpredictable rainfall in Texas. It is important to conserve water without polluting it. It is shocking to know that the drinking water has traces of arsenic, cyanide, nitrates, asbestos and mercury and lead. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Geological Survey after conducting studies have shown that water samples containing growth hormones, various antibiotics,birth control drugs, and many other chemicals end up in ground water. The Trinity River is highly polluted with bacteria from sewage. The high water pollution in Texas State by various sources causes environmental hazards and life threatening diseases like cancer and nerve damage; thus the government and community should intensify their efforts to reduce pollution and make drinking water safe.
I chose to look up the topic of water pollution. I discovered this topic by going through the themes of the sci-fi books we are currently reading. In the book Feed, by M.T. Anderson, one of the themes was environmental impact on humans so I based it off of that. This topic has always been something that I was curious about because I always wondered how water pollution affected fish. Not only does water pollution affect fish, but it also affects a lot of people. The water pollution of the Mississippi halts people from doing recreational activities like water skiing, tubing, and fishing. Drinking water is essential and indispensable to life itself possible on the face of the earth, it is much more than a well, a resource, a commodity, drinking water is specifically a human right of first order and an element essential national sovereignty itself and, most likely, whoever controls the water control the economy and life in the not so distant future.
Water is a very important resource we use and need. Clean and safe drinking water is scarce though. There are many places in the world that don’t even have clean water and then there are some countries like America that have plenty and yet take it for granted.

In this piece, similarities and differences between two authors’ point of view on the topic of safe drinking water will be analyzed. The two texts, both provide information about water pollution. The authors of For the World’s Poor, Drinking Water Can Kill and After Pollution in Flint, Some Find Tap Water’s Benefits Hard to Swallow, however similar and different point of view about the topic clean drinking water.
Water Quality is a way used to measure the quality of water in an area based on sampling. The water quality in the UHS creek was excellent. Humans can negatively impact water quality by dumping waste from factories in to rivers. As many industries are located along rivers, it makes them a convenient place for them to dump their waste, polluting the water. Another way humans can effect water quality is from storm water runoff. When it rains, the water travels down into ditches which can lead to streams, and on the way down the water picks up harmful chemicals in our cities that make their way into food chains.

Freshwater in the world makes up only a small portion of the water on the planet. While the percentage of water in the world is nearly 70%, only 2.5% is consumable. Even further, only 1% is easily accessible to basic human needs. According to National Geographic, “by 2025, an estimated 1.8 billion people will live in areas plagued by water scarcity, with two-thirds of the world's population living in water-stressed regions as a result of use, growth, and climate change.” With this current trend, water will become more immersed in environmental, economic, political, and social changes.
