Was Charles Darwin right or wrong? Scientists have been arguing over this matter for years. I maintain that his theory was indeed correct. As Jerry Coyne said “Darwin’s theory that all of life was the product of evolution, and that the evolutionary process was driven largely by natural selection, has been called the greatest idea that anyone ever had. But it is more than just a good theory, or even a beautiful one. It also happens to be true.”
Evolution by natural selection is Darwin’s most popular theory. His theory advocates that individuals show variation which is the result of differences in genes. He noticed that the songbirds on different islands were essentially related although they differed in their size, claws etc from island to island. He concluded that it was a result of the islands being distant from the mainland conducing variation. He studied many more plants and animals and after approximately 30 years of researching, he suggested his theory of evolution by natural selection.
When Darwin’s book called On the Origin of Species, where he explained his theory of evolution by natural selection, was published in the 19th century, it caused controversy mainly because his hypothesis conflicted with the religious views about the creation of the world. People believed that he insulted God and his almighty powers. Moreover, at the time scientists did not know anything about genes or variation because the science wasn’t advanced and due to these, his theory was not acknowledged.
Most evidence regarding evolution comes from fossil records, which are remains of plants or animals found in sedimentary, since they show how much an organism has changed. Even so, some fossils have been destroyed by the movements of earth and some organisms do not fossilise well. Other evidence referring to evolution link to chemical and anatomical similarities of life-forms, diffusion of related species, and mutation in organisms.
