Greatness can be defined in many ways. Some scholars today define it by a particular person’s ability to better other human beings lives while others would define it by the magnitude of their personal achievements. No matter how greatness is defined Alexander fulfills both definitions. Alexander the Great truly earned his title both by performing seemingly impossible military feats and his ability to bring about economic prosperity to everyone is his great empire. He was able to build the greatest empire that the world has ever seen. Although he lived a short life, he lived one full of seemingly impossible accomplishments. After Alexander had conquered the Persian Empire and wiped out the Persian nobles he rounded up the wealth within the Persian royal treasury and put it to good use, improving the lives of those in his empire. Alexander used the money he collected from the Persian treasury to build new roads and harbors, as well as new cities. The creation of a stronger infrastructure within his empire lays the foundation for the next reason that Alexander was great. He was able to not only grow old markets by strengthening the infrastructure of his ever growing empire; he was able to make new ones. With the creation of new roads and harbors he was able to connect people thousands of miles away and make luxury goods such as silk, all the way from China, more accessible to people increase. By introducing new routes of travel and new goods to different areas of the world he was able to make the economies flourish. This new influx of wealth into different areas of his empire brought prosperity to everyone. The most noticeable, and honorable reason that Alexander was great were his qualities as a general.
