Darwin played a significant role in the war prior to the bombing and was considered a vital Australian defence base, (Australian War Memorial). As an important town in Northern Australia, it was isolated from other major cities, so heavily relied on sea transport. In the 1930s when the war was beginning to develop, Australia began to build Darwin up as a military base, using it to send forces to help defend the Dutch East Indies. The port and airfield were improved, along with coastal defences on the beaches. As it was in such a strategic position, the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) built bases near the town. They also established maintenance facilities, munitions storage and improved communications. Within the two months before the bombing, especially when Singapore fell, the civilians of Darwin were evacuated including women, children, the sick and elderly.
The Dandenong ranges is located in the east of Melbourne. Sherbrooke forest (located in the Dandenong Ranges) is a tall, woodland forest (wet sclerophyll forest) with a height of 60-80m and a crown cover of 30%. Sites in the National park are the ‘Hardy Gully Nature trail’ (a cool rainforest with massive eucalypt trees), ‘Margret Lester walk’ (a walk suitable for wheelchair users), ‘Coles Ridge Track’ (a wet forest) and a Picnic Ground (where you can experience native bird feeding). Some biotic features include many species of bird and a wide range of flora and fauna, such as mountain ash and tree ferns, which dominate the forest. These are reasons why families would have an interest in the park. Also Indigenous Australians would have interests in the park as they were original owners of the land and a lot of the history of the Dandenongs was created because of them. Parks Victoria have a role in managing the park and providing places where the flora and fauna are protected.

However, during this period of time exhibitions were held in Sydney and Melbourne for long periods of time which helped to raise awareness and funds. The Australian War Museum officially opened on Anzac Day in 1922 in the Exhibition building in Melbourne. Large crowds were attracted to this museum and they were all positive about it and it received enthusiasm and compliments by both the public and the press. The exhibition was open until 1925 when it moved to Sydney until 1935.
