War Heroes: Lynch, Walker, And Violette Szabo

War is an ugly scar that humanity reopens time and time again, it brings out the worst in people, and makes kind-hearted souls develop into a shell of their former self. That being said, there are still traits that defy the cold reality of war, and shine through to develop the persona of a war hero: honor, bravery, and humility. Jessica Lynch, Mary Edwards Walker, and Violette Szabo are three great examples of war heroes who never turned to the cold reality of war, and always remained hopeful up until the end. Honor, defined as ‘adherence to what is right or to a conventional standard of conduct’, is seen as a noble trait to have; one that can pan out what a character strives for. Her nobility to face the scourge war brings was immense, as she had to be belittled and doubted her entire stay, all for conditions that were heinous, which were described in a letter she herself wrote, stating that, “blood and mud are everywhere, and the tents offer little shelter”. Walker’s ability to have grit and keep a compassionate heart shows an impeccable sign of bravery. Szabo, however, showed quite possibly the biggest feat of bravery, when she sacrificed herself for her comrade; “She urged Dufour to escape while she covered him.. Dufour was able to successfully hide, but Szabo was captured,”. Knowing she would more than likely die, Szabo showed courage and dignity, encouraging her ally to flee instead of trying to escape. Szabo, along with the other two women, had to face fear-inducing situations, knowing it could result in injury, or worse, a grim death, and chose to fight for what they believed in.
