“The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”  Constructed Response

    In the short story, “ The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty” written by James Thurber, it describes a man who while in the midst of everyday life, floats off into daydream that often cause him more trouble than it is worth. His wife, Mrs. Mitty, on the surface does not seem like a well-rounded character. It always seems her life’s mission is to demean Walter and to always use her overbearing nature to nag him. However, there may be more to this character than what meets the eye. I believe that Mrs. Mitty is actually a well-rounded character in the fact that she only acts the way she does only for her husband and his well-being.

One example of this is when they are driving to a hair salon, and after Mrs. Mitty gets out, Walter almost gets into several serious accidents because he is stuck in fantasyland while operating a moving vehicle. This can be proven in the text when it states, “...and he had driven onto a red light, he took them off again. ‘Pick it up, brother!’ snapped a cop as the light changed, and Mitty hastily pulled on his gloves and lurched ahead. He drove around the streets aimlessly for a time, and then drove past the hospital on his way to the parking lot”(Thurber 2 3). Mitty is just nagging Walter and does not really respect him at all. However they would be wrong. In a part of the short story it states, “Something struck his shoulder. ‘I’ve been looking all over this hotel for you,’ said Mrs. Mitty. ‘Why do you have to hide in this old chair? How did you expect me to find you”(Thurber 7 8)? This might look to some as she is nagging him of where he was and why he was not in plain sight, but she is actually very worried about him. She knows of his daydreams, however does not know exactly of what her husband is daydreaming about. This worries her, and how he almost has several accidents in the streets, and cannot remember simple things because of them, she worries his mental health is extremely fragile.
