Walter Dean Myers’ Monster - Guilty Until Proven Innocent Monster is an example of what Patty Campbell would call a “landmark book.” Texts such as these “encourage readers to interact with the text and with one another by employing a variety of devices, among them ambiguity” (Campbell 1) Because it is told through the eyes of Steve himself, the plot can be difficult to decipher. It is ambiguous whether he is innocent or guilty of being involved with the crime. Steve learned to make things unpredictable from his film teacher Mr. Sawicki who teaches him, “If you make your film predictable, they’ll make up their minds about it long before it’s over” (19). Steve took his teacher’s advice and made this film script entirely unpredictable, even after it is over. His lawyer, O’Brien, says in her closing statement, “What can we trace as to the guilt or innocence of my client, Steve Harmon?” (245) This leaves the jury with an undoubtedly difficult decision, as well as the reader, because there are clues to both guilt and innocence in Steve’s case. What we do know is that many people think Steve is guilty. One of the guards describes the case, “Six days – maybe seven. It’s a motion case. They go through the motions; then they lock them up” (14). The judicial system has many flaws, one of which being that they assume guilt before proof when it comes to people like Steve. The phrase “innocent until proven guilty” does not apply to cases like his. As prosecutor Petrocelli states in reference to people like Steve, “There are also monsters in our communities – people who are willing to steal and to kill, people who disregard the rights of others” (21). O’Brien succinctly sums this up for Steve, “You’re young, you’re Black, and you’re on ... ... middle of paper ... ... to jail. He moved away, and the distance between us seemed to grow bigger and bigger” (280). The reader is left pondering the good character of Steve, the bad friends he spent time with, the doctoring of his testimony, and the information that Steve provided us hinting both at his guilt and at his innocence. We are comfortable with the fact that he has been let free, but has been warned. If he were involved in the crime, at least he may have learned his lesson through his time in prison and on trial. If he were not involved in the crime, at least he is free to start over and move on from the experience. Works Cited Campbell, Patty. “Radical Monster.” The Horn Book Magazine. Boston: Nov/Dec 1999. Nesbitt and the robbery. “The states prosecute most crimes against the person, such as murders , assaults and many crimes against property, such as robberies and theft”(https://www.oas.org/juridico/mla/en/usa/en_usa-int-desc-guide.html). You can be prosecuted in any state for robberies and murders just like what Steve Harmon is put on trial for in the book. As previously mentioned this show that in any state you will be put on trial for robbery and murder. “Therefore, the role of judges in the investigation of criminal offenses is limited”(https://www.oas.org/juridico/mla/en/usa/en_usa-int-desc-guide.html) . They are just saying that judges don't really have any say whenever it comes to the investigation of criminal offenses but they do some extent. Judging by Steven Harmon’s case he is seen as just a young black man of trial for being an accessory to a murder and robbery that’s all the jury needs to know right? But that’s note true they need to look at all the facts of the case and all the facts tell you that Steve Harmon did in fact take part in the murder of Mr. Nesbitt and the robbery of his drug

Half of those jurors, no matter what they said when we questioned them when we picked the jury, believed you were guilty the moment they laid eyes on you. You’re young, you’re black, and you’re on the trail” (Myers 79). This quote helps to show that Steve was completely judged on how he looked. So, in the beginning of the book, Steve thought he was never getting out of jail. This gives the reader an understanding of where Steve is coming from, and why he believes he is a monster.

Victor Frankenstein is innocent. There is no doubt in my mind that Victor Frankenstein is innocent for the murder of Justine, Elizabeth, and William. They were in fact killed by a man named, “The Creature.” He in fact killed the two of them to get revenge on the man who created him. The Creature was angry that everyone thought that he was ugly, and hated to be around him. It all started when Dr. Henry Clerval told Victor Frankenstein not to make the Creature because he would be one that destroys everything. Victor then got Dr. Clerval’s Journal after he had died, and he started to make the Creature. Once the Creature was all assembles and born he was brought to life by Frankenstein. Frankenstein was then afraid of his own creation and fled the lab. The creature then got out and found some clothes and made his way to the country side where he then found his way to the little house in the woods where the De Lacey family lived.
Reality based television has a broad landscape ranging from competitive game-like shows to programs following the daily lives of a group of people. Every major network now has some form of reality programming because the genre’s shows are high in viewership and require low costs for production. The genre is appealing to viewers because it provides them with a first-hand look into the lives of everyday people, which allows them to observe social behavior that helps them determine what is appropriate or not (Tyree, 2011, p. 397). Since the majority of modern reality stars start out as unknowns, frequent viewers of reality programming believed that fame is obtainable if they appear on a popular show (Mendible, 2004). According to Mendible’s evaluation of the genre in the article Humiliation, Subjectivity, and Reality TV, people enjoy reality programs beca...

In 1900, there were 1.75 million child workers in the United States alone, that was 18 percent of all American workers at the time. In southern cotton mills 25 percent of the employees were below the age of fifteen, with half of them being below the age of 3 (History.com). Child Labor is the the use of children in industry or business when considered illegal or inhumane. Child Labor is a social issue that was at its peak during the Industrial Revolution and still occurs today, but has declined drastically over the years due to the unions against it and laws put in affect.
What are monsters? Who are monsters? Clawed brutes, winged terrors, and giant robots are examples that fill popular fiction. In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Philip K. Dick focuses on monsters that are not so easily identified. These monsters have human appearances but lack human feelings; they are defined and ruled by the technology around them, reduced to little more than cogs in the machine. The technology featured in Dick’s post-apocalyptic world is dichotomous and extrapolates from current trends in technology. Technology acts as a medium for connection between people, yet simultaneously isolates them. It is intended as a tool for empowerment, but is used instead for pacification. Through the topic of technology in Androids, Dick echoes bioethicist Leon Kass, who believes that the “technical conquest of his own nature would almost certainly leave mankind utterly enfeebled” (qtd. in Bostrom). In this paper, I will discuss how Philip K. Dick uses technology in Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?, to warn of the danger of such “androidization”, the instrumentation of humans and the loss of individual will and expression.

Child labor is the employment of children, but not all work done by children should be classified as child labor that should be eliminated. Children’s participation in work that does not affect their health and personal development or interfere with their schooling is generally regarded as being something positive. The term “child labor” is defined as work that deprives children of their childhood, interferes with their ability to attend regular school, and that is mentally, physically, socially or morally dangerous and harmful.
The term ‘child labor’ is used to define any work that is mentally, physically and morally harmful to children, and interferes with their education (ILO). Children have been used as a labor force throughout most of our history. After decades of struggle aimed to combat the massive employment of child labor, the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989 ratified that children have the right to develop harmoniously their personality in a loving family environment. Moreover, it recognized the right of the children to be protected from exploitation, and any form of labor that jeopardizes their physical, mental and moral well-being. However, child labor is still eagerly diffuse in developing countries,
Child Labor has been around for a long time. Child Labor is the use of children in industry of business, especially when illegal or considered inhumane. Child Labor harms children and/or keeps them from school and from their childhood. Multiple children that are over the age of eight already have jobs. Children are already treated as adults by the age of thirteen and some already have children of their own. Child Labor is bad for society and younger children because children are losing their childhood and aren’t getting an education like other children are. It’s difficult to know how many children under the age of fifteen. Most kids that are involved in child labor are forced to do it and if they refuse they are beaten and sometimes hung because they will refuse to work. It is very dangerous and unsuitable for kids to work. Kids can be easily stressed if they are beaten. Parents sell their kids to horrible people and make them do awful things.
