Walt Disney once said, “All of our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” One man’s dream changed the world. Walt Disney is known worldwide for his ingenuity and creativity. He is also recognized for one of the biggest corporations worldwide. So what has made him stand out? All through Walt’s life, he worked hard to rise above his circumstances, determined never to give up, and above all to never stop dreaming. Walt Disney is among the top most successful businessmen of his time because of the ventures he made, the work he established, and his legacy that lives on.

Early on, Walt Disney was working so hard he was having some trouble sleeping, so he took some sleeping pills to help him sleep. His wife, Lilly was unable to wake him up one morning and she called the doctor who prescribed a long trip for rest and relaxation. Walt wanted each of the dwarfs in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” to be a distinct individual. The solution was to create names for them that would reflect their personalities. Walt Disney created the American fantasy from thoughts pulled out of the far reaches of his imagination. He was a man who had never let go of his inner child. Walter Elias Disney was born on December 5th, 1901, in Chicago. He was the fourth of five children, having three brothers, Herbert, Raymond, and Roy, when he was born. In 1903, parents Elias and Flora added a daughter, Ruth, to the family. Elias worried about big-city life, so the Disney family moved to a farm near Marceline, Missouri, in 1906 (Jaffe 7). Walt’s job on the farm was to take care of the animals, many of which would inspire his famous characters later in life (“Walt Disney”). Walt Disney arrived in California in the summer of 1923 with a lot of hopes but little else. He had made a cartoon in Kansas City about a little girl in a cartoon world, called Alice’s Wonderland, and he decided that he could use it as his “pilot” film to sell a series of these “Alice Comedies” to a distributor. Soon after arriving in California, he was successful. A distributor in New York, M. J. Winkler, contracted to distribute the “Alice Comedies” on October 16, 1923, and this date became the start of the Disney company. Originally known as the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio, with Walt Disney and his brother, Roy, as equal partners, the company soon changed its name, at Roy’s suggestion, to the Walt Disney Studio.
