Walmart I selected Walmart for my Global Fortune 500 essay. I choose Walmart because it is a company that appears in almost every part of the world. I thought it would be interesting to learn about a company that I go to at least once a week, for everything I need. Walmart operates more than 11,000 physical stores in 28 countries, and has e-commerce websites in eleven different countries. In 2016, Walmart brought in $27.7 trillion in revenue, and $1.5 trillion in profits. They have been on the Global 500 lists for the last 23 years. Walmart is a very broad company that operates in 28 countries including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, and many more. At the age of twenty-four he joined the military, and a year later married a woman named Helen Robson. His service ended in 1945, and from then on, Sam and Helen moved around a lot while Sam learned some early retailing experience. In 1950, they moved to Bentonville where Sam open his first store; Walton’s 5 & 10 on the downtown square. Encouraged by the success of his store, Sam opened the first Walmart in 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas. Sam believed a successful business could be built around offering lower prices and great service. His company exceeded all expectations, and in 1970 he went public which helped finance the expanding of his business. He brought innovative approaches and technology to the retail stores. He also brought new store formats including Sams Club, Walmart Supercenters and even expanded the company to Mexico. His commitment and values that helped people, businesses, and the country succeed, earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The medal was awarded by George W. Bush in 1992. The company has constant training on global ethics education. Walmart believes that everyone should be able to save money with lower prices. The company strives hard to make sure that every customer of theirs can go to a store, or the online website, and order whatever it is you need; at a low reasonable cost. Many years ago, Walmart made three goals they wanted to complete: operate with 100% renewable energy, to create zero waste, and to buy and sell products that do not harm our environment at all. Being environmental friendly is important to Walmart. In 2016, Walmart was the first retailor to set an emissions-reduction plan which aimed to reduce emissions created by their own production by eighteen percent by 2025, and work with their supplies to lower their emissions by one gigaton between 2015-2030. To achieve this they use clean, affordable, renewable energy, improve energy efficiency in the facilities, improve refrigeration systems in the facilities, and continue to maximum the efficiency of their trucking fleet. By the end of 2017, Walmart will have 360 onsite solar installations throughout the United States. Walmart is also solar in India and South Africa, and has been widely recognized by the EPA as being a leader in onsite renewable energy.
