On July, 2nd 1962, Sam Walton realized a dream when he opened the first Walmart location in Rogers, Arkansas (Rowell, 2016). The concept behind the store was simple, “The Lowest Prices Anytime, Anywhere” (“Our History”, 2016). Within the first ten years of opening its first location, Walmart had become an incorporated company, opened 23 additional locations, and was publicly traded on the NYSE (“Our History,” 2016).

The strength in sustainability is that it includes renewable energy and a focus on people and the environment. Walmart states that “ten years ago Walmart set out in earnest to find a more sustainable approach to our retail business. We set long-term goals to operate with 100 percent renewable energy, to create zero waste in our own operations and to sell products that sustain people and the environment” (Walmart, 2016). Walmart has transparency of political engagement, Walmart makes all the information from WALPAC about federal contributions accessible to the public on the FCC website. Their governance is strong because Walmart Established a Compensation, Nomination and Governance Committee (CNGC) to oversee the tools necessary for the board to be effective. They compare themselves to other companies to ensure they are maintaining effective governance processes. The Board committee is set up in a way that complies with the laws of Sarbanes–Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX), in that they have an independent auditor. Customer relations is another strength of Walmart’s CSR policy. Walmart has invested billions each year into programs for training associates to help make the customer experience more enjoyable. There is only a small portion of the CSR that mentions bribery and/or corruption, we feel this is a weakness because Walmart has had some very public scandals involving bribery, most recently in getting their Mexico stores built. The weakness of not addressing the disadvantage their suppliers have because of Walmart policies. K. Evans states, “Wal-Mart subjects its suppliers to strict regulations on product quality and employee working conditions, for example, which add production time and increase overhead for the suppliers. Their competitors, meanwhile, can operate at lower costs and turn out products more quickly” (Evans). We found the lack of emphasis on employees to be a weakness in the CSR because there is no mention of employees being able to earn shares in the company, or any opportunity for advancement. Lastly, when we were reading through the Global Report we realized that it mostly focused on North American operations and fails to address the operations they have in other parts of the world. Just nine years from that, Wal-Mart's annual sales exceeded one billion dollars. In 1988, Wal-Mart super centers opened across the country. In a merely three years from that, Wal-Mart opened their own store in Mexico City, Mexico; making Wal-Mart an international corporation. Not even sixty years has past, and yet, Wal-Mart is over-powering our country.
According to Smithson, Walmart can expand its markets to new and emerging markets especially in the third world countries, which can significantly increase its revenues. Secondly, the company can reform is employment practices and improve the quality standard and in doing so, attract more customers and improve its brand image. On the other hand, the company faces threats such as the rising healthy lifestyle trend I that the company in most cases does not provide customers with healthy goods. At the same time, the company can capitalize on this aspect and increase its revenues. Aggressive competition from other discount retailers such as Target creates a great threat to the company (Smithson, 2015).

Walmart is a company that can be seen from many different perspectives. Due to its vast size; it can be easy to identify its faults and environmental issues surrounding the company. However, they are well aware of these problems and criticisms and have made many efforts towards issues around the world. The motivation and desire Walmart have to improve the world we live in today can be seen through their treatment of employees, suppliers as well as their efforts towards the environment and other humanitarian issues. Given this, there is still endless resources on the web proving the company to be one of a negative burden on society.
Today Wal-mart has a higher GDP than the entire country of Switzerland, but don’t worry they’re pretty neutral about it. But there has also been news about how they treat there employees. In 2004 an article was released entitled Everyday Low Wages: The Hidden Price We All Pay for Wal-Mart, and soon after Washington got involved. The bad publicity took a toll on Wal-mart and in fact is still today, Maryland passed a law in January, 2006, that said larger employers, such as Wal-mart, must spend at least 8% of their payroll on health benefits for their employees, and now many other states have followed suit. The bad publicity also made it so 8% of customers shop elsewhere because of what they’ve heard, this has caused lower expected sales around the holidays during 2004, and 2005. Some things they’ve done is in 2006 they paid employees on average 9.36 dollars, while other major retailers like Target and Sears pay on average 11.08 dollars. While this can be easily denied by Wal-mart, another way they have gained bad publicity is from something called off-the-clock work. After relocating to Rogers, Arkansas in the early 1950s, Sam Walton’s ‘Ben Franklin’ became ‘Walton’s 5 & 10’. By 1962, Walton found himself the chain owner of 11 different Walton’s stores across Arkansas. He then decided to rename the chain ‘Wal-Mart’, after himself. On October 31, 1969, after further expansion across the state, the chain was incorporated as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Three years later, Wal-Mart was approved and listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is in the discount, variety stores industry. It was founded in 1945, Bentonville in Arkansas which is also the headquarters of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart operates locally as well as worldwide. It operated 1209 discount stores, 1980 super centers, and 567 Sam’s Club by January 31, 2006. It has also extended its operations to many international countries. It runs its retail stores in two forms: Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart Stores. The Sam’s Club sells assorted product lines such as hardwares, electronics, jewelry, and to mention a few. The corporate social responsibility is a commitment by a business to contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life for employees and their families’ as-well as contributing to the society. Walmart is a well-known company that offers customers the items they want and need at a low cost, with nearly 4,000 stores in the United States. According to the Fortune 500, Walmart was ranked number 1 in 2015. Just like any other superstore Walmart needs to continue the use of social responsibility by recreating a relationship between business and the community especially if they want to dominate the competition in 2016. The use of sustainability, strategic philanthropy, causing market, shared values, stakeholders and global perspective will help readers understand the purpose of social responsibilities in the corporate world.
On the whole the behavior of Wal-Mart remained disappointing in the after math of the two discussed incidents. Their action and statements have severely damaged their legitimacy. Wal-Mart has not attributed any funds to avoid such incidents in future, as shown in their annual reports. Not any new agreement regarding CSR has been signed by the Wal-Mart to ensure the workers safety. On the other hand the Primark has realized the importance of CSR and took steps to improve their legitimacy. Overall, there is an observed trend in the industrialists to start following and ensuring safety measures. The cooperation has also increased between the stake holders to protect the CSR, so that to enhance the legitimacy.
