Introduction
Leading organizations have recognized that sustainability is important for long-term profitability and they start paying attention to this issue. Sustainability performance is often used interchangeably with corporate social responsibility (CSR) (Epstein, 2008). Society and sustainability are interconnected and the society has certain expectations in terms of appropriate business behavior. Wal-Mart faces a massive challenge in balancing low process with various social concerns. It is obvious that Wal-Mart’s environmental footprint is huge. “It is the largest private electricity user in the United States and it has the second largest fleet of trucks” (p24). It should set high standards of behavior for all employees and have in place effective system for monitoring, evaluating and reporting any ethical violations.
Governance: Wal-Mart mission and vision should be clearly written, widely understood and openly communicated to all employees. These mission and vision should reflect the sustainability strategy and performance indicators to be developed and monitored. Wal-Mart’s board and management should know the impact of Wal-Mart’s products and services on its customers. The board and management are committed to enforce the sustainability programs and develop systems such as audit of performance that encourage employees to act in compliance and consistent with those programs.
Transparency: Wal-Mart must provide timely disclosure of information about its products and services to its customers and its plans to have sustainable products as per their sustainability programs.
Business Relation: Wal-Mart shall encourage long-term relationship with its suppliers, distributers and customers not only because of price and quality but also on social, ethical and environmental
