Every night, students come home from school with an overwhelming amount of homework. Not only is it stressful, it devours a good amount of free time. On top of that, after staying up late studying and writing essays, we have to wake up extremely early. It’s exhausting and by the time the weekend rolls around we’re relieved. These details like waking up too early or getting too much homework determines how we are as a student and our future. Here at P.C.C.S. we do exactly this; we stay up working on homework and then we wake up sometimes as early as 5 a.m. It’s a huge step in the wrong direction.
To start off, too much homework can be a huge time consuming monster. With what some students do after school, there simply isn’t enough time to
do homework and get enough sleep. “For high schoolers, two hours appears optimal. As with middle-schoolers, give teens more than two hours a night and academic success flatlines” (Crawford, “Does homework really work?”). After a certain amount of homework, students don’t want to try anymore and resort to other ways to get it done. Reducing amounts of homework will prevent finding ways around doing homework while also allowing us to absorb what the homework is actually trying to teach. It’s absolutely miserable for A.P. and honors students because some have to make sure that every single detail is perfect while also doing a huge amount of homework. “This kind of busy work, by its very nature, discourages learning and instead promotes doing homework simply to get points,” (Parker, “Stanford research shows pitfalls of homework”). When you have more than 2 hours of homework, it completely defeats the purpose of it being there in the first place. You might as well just get rid of homework entirely, which is preferable. If we’re going to keep homework we need to reduce it to 2 hours at most. Not only is it a waste of time for students, it’s a waste of time for teachers and a huge waste of paper.

79% of American middle school and high school students take part regularly in at least one after-school extracurricular activity. Many students participate in sports that can take up to 4 hours of their time, daily. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school students will be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste.

Many students who feel the pressure to succeed at the high school level have an unhealthy amount of stress. Students who feel this have been cheating, pulling all nighters, becoming depressed, and seeking relief in drug use, and self mutilation. On average in a recent study at Illinois high school students spend 3.07 hours of homework each night on just homework not including extra curricular activities(Jerushapope,2). Also in this high school students reported getting 6.8 hours of sleep each night, but 34.6% reported getting 6 or fewer hours of sleep(Jerushapope,2). Most high school students spend 2 hours of extra curricular activity each night thats not including homework so after those activities you have to come home and do homework and then you will not have a lot of time to sleep. Also most kids do not get a lot of time to spend with their parents during the weeknights. When in the course of life events, their comes a time in a student’s life where he/she can no longer manage all their homework assignments given to them by their teacher. As a student gets older they begin to have a harder time in concentrating in their school needs. This becomes worse if one is involved in any academic or athletic programs after or before school.

Teachers assign questions for say 1 to 5 and one thinks to themselves, “ Oh that’s not too bad” until they flip through the textbook only to find each sections goes from A-Z. Picture this a typical, hard-working student. Each day one receives multiple assignments to complete for homework. The student is involved in several extracurricular activities so they doesn’t have much extra time. After sport practice, they head home, bury their head in books, and begins to study.
We all know the downfall of homework: the frustration and exhaustion, family conflict, time loss, and decreasing interest in learning. The most common word for students in high school: homework. Overwhelmed every day by loads of homework given to them by their 6 teachers, some 7 teachers. Teenagers at the high school level see this more than at the junior high level. Bombarded by homework day after day, no time to do anything else. Homework leaves students with less sleep, fewer things to do, and takes time away from their family.
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. All students recognize this brand of homework; homework that doesn’t teach the material and is completed only for the sake of being completed. The infamous term “busywork” comes to mind. Teachers in high schools dole out paper after paper of unnecessary busywork, which is frustratingly tedious and incredibly time-consuming. Copying sentences word for word from a long-winded textbook, completing redundant activities that reiterate again and again the same skill, rushing through mandatory study guide after mandatory study guide, that is a true curse. I know this from painful experience.
