Is it possible that the Disney film WALL-E could have predict the future for technology and humanity? WALL-E is movie that takes places 700 years in the future. Humans left Earth because of the massive amounts of pollution, and they are on a spaceship called the Axiom. While the humans are aboard the ship they left robots (named Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-class) to cleanup Earth during this 700-year period all the cleanup robots are destroyed except for one. These humans are surrounded and controlled by the technology around them, and the only thing that can save them from their ‘enslavement’ of technology is WALL-E. Scientist are inventing many useful tools for helpful innovating reasons, but some other tools may be unnecessary. Scientist maybe inventing different tools, but the high demand for technology means a high demand for natural resources (for example, fossils fuels waters, and minerals) (Natural Resources). A high demand for natural resources can cause a shortage in supply and can lead to these resources vanishing completely. “Smithsonian” online magazine surveyed people and said that “in 10 years’ robots will be caregivers to people”. With the “future advances in technology people will use it more and that will make them depend on it like drug”, says Seteve Slate. (Slate, Addiction) One can only assume that in the future everyone will focus primarily on technology and this can result into isolation and no interaction with people. In comparison to what scientist predicts for the future and WALL-E have similarities like: robots as care givers, limiting natural resources, and potentially losing human interaction. Gattaca and Wall-E fall into unit three, which includes technology, dystopia, and ideology. These films take place in the future where technology has become extremely relevant to the characters everyday lives and it majorly effects society. Over the course of the films, the different aspects of technology, both positive and negative, are portrayed very clearly. While Gattaca and Wall-E have some differences, they both exude the themes of technology and social ethics in a relatively similar manner and conclude that while technology can be helpful, it can also have monstrous social ramifications.
Many years after its release, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner has become one of the most analyzed and debated science fiction films ever produced. The film was a failure during its initial release in 1982, the reviews were negative and it wasn’t even close to being a box office hit; however, after the director’s cut release in 1992 Blade Runner had a rebirth and it became a highly respected science fiction film. Ridley Scott’s inspiration to produce Blade Runner came from Philip K. Dick’s 1969 novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Although the screen writers for Blade Runner mostly just took the main character from Dick’s novel, they added certain key topics that kept a relationship between the two. At the film’s premier Harrison Ford said, “It's a film about whether you can have a meaningful relationship with your toaster.”[1] Despite Ford’s reference the film is very sophisticated in respect its visionary portrayal of the consequences of technology on humanity. A central ethical question that Blade Runner raises as well as in many other popular science fiction novels and films is what the boundaries of humanity are? Blade Runner’s answer is that humanity can expand to occupy many forms and human nature reached the point where genetic engineering, human biology, and digital technology are now an important part of society.
Since the beginning of man, humans have adapted to their environment by creating tools; some of the earliest being stones and sticks to the introduction of the wheel, in which all were purposed to make life more efficient. Yet there are those who believe that some revolutionary innovations have actually hindered humankind more than helped. However, these pessimist are faulty since even mistakes made in the technological world have still led to unexpected breakthroughs and in turn their positive effects outweigh their negative ones. Evidently, advancements in technology are made simply to facilitate the survival of humans therefore it is clearly beneficial to society and its growth.
Technological advancements have always played a big role in the literary progression of mankind. As knowledge is gained, technology has improved, and as technology improved so has the literature. Starting from the Anglo Saxon era, and continuing through the postmodern era. From oral to written stories, to the printing press, to the Industrial Revolution, man’s literature has changed progressively throughout each phase, taking on a different point of view and attaining more understanding. Stanley Kubrick, the director of 2001: A Space Odyssey, understand the concept of technological advances on mankind. And his movie can be considered as a parallel to this concept of advancements.
While the movie is more action based, Asimov’s books are focused on human-robot relations. In a lot of Asimov’s robot stories, rarely any robot breaks the three laws. The biggest connection between the movie and the books are the leading characters like Dr. Susan Calvin and Dr. Alfred Lanning. The “I, Robot” book is a complete history of robots told through Dr. Calvin’s eyes and the movie is just a part of this huge history. Although the plot of the movie isn’t a part of the book, it surly speaks the words and ideas of Isaac Asimov and I think that if he were alive, he would very much appreciate the movie and his acknowledgment and respect in the world of robotics.
This class of robots was produced to clean up the environmental damage that was left behind by humans, who were forced to leave earth aboard a luxury spaceship because it was no longer inhabitable. After 700 years, Wall-E has outlasted his fellow robots and is the only remaining functioning robot left on earth, and yet Wall-E continues his duty of cleaning up the garbage left behind by the massive consumerism of previous human races. Wall-E is finally visited by the robot Eve: Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator, who was created by the human race to determine when Earth would regain its habitability. While humans are continuing their convenient consumer driven lives aboard the luxury spaceship through the use of grooming bots, cleaning bots, beauty bots, and any type of bot meant to eliminate trivial human behavior, they send robots such as Eve down to earth to determine when they will be able to return to the planet. However, once it is clear that life can sustain itself again on Earth’s surface, Auto which is short for autopilot, who is the robotic captain of the ship decides that returning to Earth would alter this way of life that BnL has worked so hard to create.
In the film Wall-E we are introduced to a distant and future world. In this future world a single company, Buy’n’Large, controls all consumer goods. Humans have consumed and waisted to the point of Earth becoming one giant landfill. The environment becomes so damaged that the earth is deemed uninhabitable, and all plant life ceases to grow. Humans abandon Earth, and their responsibilities, and leave robots behind to clean up their mess while they “go on a cruise”. Technology is has been perfected in this future world and the entire population lives in a fully automated spaceship called the Axiom. Well, it may be different from what is being told in movies or conspiracists; instead of robots rebelling from their human overloads, it seems that humans and robots will share the planet. The robots will not be simple-minded nor be slaves, but rather humans with robotic bodies. The essay “You, Robot?” by David Leech Anderson, describes what current scientists are doing to achieve a point in science where humans can download his or her brain onto a robot and continue to live his or her life. It may seem something out of a science-fiction novel, but remember that cars were once a fantasy turned reality.

Robots are over-taking us. Or are being taken over by robots? There have been many robots developed to make life easier. Robotics has had some positive effects in the performance of certain jobs. It can help us complete difficult jobs that use materials that are not safe for humans to handle such as radioactive materials. A single robot can do heavy tasks that would require 10 people to complete. However, this savings in time and money for companies could result in loss of hours and wages for employees.

Though it has taken 150 million years to reach current day, the intellectual journey was not gradual in a linear sense. If one was to plot significant events occurring throughout human existence, Mankind’s ability to construct new ideas follows a logarithmic path, and is rapidly approaching an asymptote, or technological singularity. This singularity event has scientists both supporting and rejecting the concept of an imaginative plateau; the largest topic discussed is Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). When this technological singularity is reached, it is hypothesized that man’s greatest creation, an artificial sapient being, will supersede human brain capacity. According to some, this event will lead to the extermination of mankind as humans are deemed obsolete. Yet others are projecting a mergence between A.I. and Humanity, a gradual conversion of man and machine. Will the projected apex of our technical evolution be a gradual or abrupt end of mankind?
Today there are many technological advancement to enhance our daily activities, whether it be as simple as an Ipod for entertainment purposes or as vital as an artificial heart for the survival of a human live, science and technology is the reason for its existence.
Our minds have created many remarkable things, however the best invention we ever created is the computer. The computer has helped us in many ways by saving time, giving accurate and precise results, also in many other things. but that does not mean that we should rely on the computer to do everything we can work with the computer to help us improve and at the same time improve the computer too. A lot of people believe that robots will behave like humans someday and will be walking on the earth just like us. There should be a limit for everything so that our world would remain peaceful and stable. At the end, we control the computers and they should not control us.
