7. I’m not quite sure what topic I want to write about for my senior thesis but will revolve around American politics, I have been considering a few specific areas including foreign policy, voter suppression, as well as constitutional interpretation. I’m not sure where I want to go yet but for voter suppression specifically in the 2016 election as many states had enacted tougher voting laws and I would be interested in working with Dr. Nadine Koch from the political science department as she is really the one that was giving me ideas, and this one I remember very clearly, along with a professor from the History Department Dr. Dawn Dennis as she teaches many courses on race and American history. For foreign policy, specifically middle eastern

The United States of America has engaged in the battle known as political polarization since before its foundation in 1776. From the uprising against the powerful British nation to the political issues of today, Americans continue to debate about proper ideology and attempt to choose a side that closely aligns with their personal beliefs. From decade to decade, Americans struggle to determine a proper course of action regarding the country as a whole and will often become divided on important issues. Conflicts between supporters of slavery and abolitionists, between agriculturalists and industrialists, and between industrial workers and capitalists have fueled the divide. At the Congressional level there tends to be a more prevalent display of polarization and is often the blame of Congress’ inefficiency. James Madison intentionally designed Congress to be inefficient by instating a bicameral legislation. Ambition would counter ambition and prevent majority tyranny. George Washington advised against political parties that would contribute to polarization and misrepresentation in his Farewell Address of 1796. Washington warns, “One of the expedients of party to acquire influence within particular districts is to misrepresent the opinions and aims of other districts.” Today, the struggle to increase power between political parties results in techniques to gain even the smallest marginal gains. To truly understand political polarization, we must examine data collected through a variety of means, the effects of rapidly changing technology, and observe what techniques are used to create such a polarized political system.

According to Daniel Elazer, there are three separate manifestations of the American political culture. Daniel states that there wasn’t just one political culture that there was three, these being moralistic, individualistic, and traditionalistic. Daniel states that each individual state has a culture type of the three that were named above. He shows that the southern states are more of the traditionalistic type. Elazer goes on to explain that migration in the 19th century gave pattern to the dominant cultures, and that migration was happening from east to west. As these people migrated throughout the United States not only did they move to get a new life or so to say a fresh start, these people also took their values with them. Dominant culture
3. Why your research is important and how it contributes to the field of African and African American Studies/Literature. In African American Studies/Literature I walked in thinking that I could be told nothing about African American culture or history because I’m African American. In some ways I knew that racism existed, but I learned how it has been subtle in controlling the way we think. We have learned that colonization has not ended and that in many ways we are still being oppressed.
In the midst of one of the most controversial presidential elections in history, both political parties are struggling to prove that their candidate is the best choice. Clinton and Trump’s disapproval ratings are very low, but one has to ask, is there really a lesser evil to choose from? While Clinton has had her own fair share of past discrepancies, Trump’s track record proves much more troublesome. Donald Trump has proven to be an untrustworthy presidential candidate because of his misogynistic actions, his racial bias, and his corrupt business history.
As a political science major Washington DC or something related to it usually comes out in classes. It has been a personal dream to go visit, but it has become a recent aspiration to go and work there. In any field, it can be difficult to get a job to jumpstart one’s career. The “real world” is known as after college for most people. For the post college reality, I have been trying to make it as painless as possible, but at the same time have it reach its full potential success wise.

The idea of political culture is found within the state’s history. The history of the state is impacted by the people settled in the region, religious backgrounds, and geography. The history of the state influences the attitudes and beliefs that people hold regarding their political system. Daniel Elazar theorized a connection between the states’ history and attitude towards government by explaining differences in government between states. Every state is different with some common ground. Elazar’s theory divides states into three types: moralistic, traditionalistic and individualistic. The state’s constitution defines the powers of government with political culture bias. Because of the state constitution, the political culture influences the power and limitations of governors, legislative, and judiciaries.
America is polarized, even though the author believes that polarization is only occurring within political circles. Although the author, shows this, it is hard to believe due to the current political climate in America. With many articles coming out, detailing either political party misdeeds, it has been shown that the majority of parties may not care for their constituents anymore. This polarization is starting to become a hot issue due to everything going on today. Polarization within the general population of the United States is rising due to current political sentiment.
I am very interested in African American history. So I looked up ‘African American Conflicts and Compromise’. I find it a little bit fun to learn about my ancestors and everything they have been through. There were many of suggestions online on which topic I should choose but I found that the Compromise of 1850 also created some conflicts. I was also interested in this topic because it had turned out that Henry Clay had written this paper, which is a person who my class had just learned about.
At the beginning of unit one students were asked to elect five topics they would be compelled to write. I choose Police Corruption; New Domestic Violence Laws will change Victim’s Life Style; Juvenile Delinquency, Victims’ Rights; and Social
The present study explores the relation between voter demographics and personal values to the values held by political candidates who may not promote the same values as a voter's in-group. More specifically, we're looking at Christians' internal responses to voting for a candidate that does not hold Christian values. We hypothesize that Christians will change which values are important for a candidate to have when the candidate does not hold the same values as Christians, but does hold the same political party as the participant. We expect there not to be a value change when a candidate does not hold the same values as Christians and does not hold the same political party as the participant. After running a MANOVA, we found that our hypothesis was not supported. However, there was a significant difference between political parties on religious values, such that Republicans held higher religious values than Democrats. This research is beneficial because it helps us to understand voting behaviors.
