Voodoo In Haitian Culture

When most people hear the word voodoo they visualize very scary, gruesome things because of the images portrayed by books and movies we’ve read or seen. Voodoo is not a secret mystery practiced in someone’s basement. It has roots as old as Africa with millions of followers today. To some people voodoo is a legal religion and is in many ways a positive magic. West Indies voodoo folk religion is a negative magic for several reasons.

Voodoo originated in the West Indies country of Haiti during the French Colonial Period, and it is still widely practiced in Haiti today. The word 'Voodoo' derives from the word 'vodu' in the Fon language of Dahomey, which means 'spirit', 'god'. The Haitian slaves were captured from many different tribes throughout …show more content…

Though it says voodoo is accepted by the Catholic Church other religions such as Christianity it is not. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 KJV says “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.” Meaning you must never sacrifice your sons or daughters by burning them alive, practice black magic, be a fortuneteller, witch, or sorcerer, cast spells, ask ghosts or spirits for help, or consult the dead. Whoever does these things is disgusting to the Lord, which voodoo does all of those things. Also Isaiah 8:19 KJV says “And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?” Meaning someone may say to you, “Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead. With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? The most impressive bit of information that I will keep with me is to be less judgmental of others; “people who practice voodoo believe in the same God as Christianity, but they also believe in communicating with other spirits, who serve various roles in healing, casting spells, and more” (Boudreaux, 2015a, p. 110). As a golden rule, I know that I should not be judgmental of others anyway, but I am human and am prone to quickly create stereotypes in my mind.
