Visual Impairment Outline

I. Intro- Visual impairment is when a person has sight loss that cannot be fully corrected using glasses or contact lenses. Many people will have some type of visual problem at some point in their lives. For example some may not be able to see objects far away or others may have problems reading small print.
A. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) believe visual impairment is the functional limitation of the eye or the vision system. 1. These things lead to: -Loss of visual acuity and inability of the person to see o objects as clearly as a healthy person -Loss of visual field meaning inability of an individual to see as wide an area as …show more content…

It is possible to develop with conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, genetic or developmental abnormalities
C. Adults who are visually impaired may struggle with fulfilling employment and day to day activities
IV. How are children affected-
A. Some babies have congenital blindness- means they are visually blind at birth. Causes could be transmission of infections such as German measles during pregnancy
B. Children with partial or complete impairment are often developmentally delayed especially in gross and fine motor skills.
V. How many people does Visual Impairment affect?
A. American Foundation for the Blind estimates that 10 million people in the United States are visually impaired. This study includes those with partial vision loss as well. B. Some people are not completely blind and are considered legally blind.
1. Example a legally blind person would have to stand 20 feet away from an object to see it the way as the average person standing 200 feet away from it.
VI. Treatment or Assistance
A. Some conditions may be treated with eyeglasses, contact lenses, and eye drops or other medicines
B. Some cases cause for surgery which consists of replacing the damage or clouded lens with an artificial

    Vision is something many people take for granted every day. Society only deals with the matter of being blind if they are the less fortunate ones. According to the Braille Institute, "every seven minutes a person in the United States loses their sight, often as part of the aging process" (1). Only two percent of legally blind people use a guide dog and thirty-five percent use a white cane. Blindness can be caused from various different types of things including (in order) age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related cataracts. (Braille 1). However being blind does not mean a person is in total darkness. Some people can see lights and the shapes of objects, but the most import thing is for family and friends to provide hope and encouragement.
