The island is home to some marvellous cave temples which are thought to have been created between the 5th and 8th centuries and are today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island, originally known as Gharapuri (Place of Caves), derives its name from a massive stone statue of an elephant that is now displayed in the Victoria Gardens in Mumbai. The island was named Elephanta by the Portuguese who found the statue. We recommend you to be in sports rig. You will enjoy trekking experience there. We live in a world brimming with natural spaces. Why are some sacralized, made the home of rituals, and cherished by religious adherents? This chapter focuses on the creation and maintenance of sacred spaces within the natural world. In this case, we have directed our attention to natural spaces that are associated with specific religions, mostly in the form of Hinduism and Native American religions. These spaces elicit strong sacrificial qualities that serve important purposes for their visitors and thus impact the geographic landscape around them. This chapter includes three separate pieces. The first piece, written by Hannah Huggins, analyzes the process by which natural sacred spaces are created and does so with an emphasis on Devils Tower, the Ganges River, and Crater Lake. The second piece, written by Lena Beckhorn, broadly looks at Hinduism and why Hindu sacred spaces are commonly found within nature. The third piece, written by Madison McClish, looks specifically at the Ganges

In the following essay, I will be comparing and contrasting to architectural pieces by the Indians. The first is the Taj Mahal, a building constructed from white marble that took seventeen years to build in honor of Shah Jahan’s wife, Mumtaz Mahal (Z. Haq). This piece of architectural beauty belonged to the Mughal’s, the Muslim emperors in India (Z. Haq). The second is the Great Stupa at Sanchi, a holy, dome shaped structure that covers the body of the Buddha in honor of him and his contributions to Buddhism (Fischer, Julia). Furthermore, this structure was made of ruins, rocks, mud, and covered in bricks (Fischer, Julia). Both pieces of architecture are significant to the Indians, however they do contrast in some ways.
