UMBC’s upset of Virginia is one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history. At the spectrum center in Charlotte, North Carolina on March 16th UMBC became the first and only team to ever beat a number one seed in the tournament. UMBC shot over 50% on three point shots which is one of the biggest reasons why they won. UMBC did not just barely get by Virginia. The team beat the Virginia Cavaliers 74-54. At the start of the game nobody would have thought that the team from Maryland would make history that night. Going into that game Virginia was the number one team in the whole country. One of the key factors in the game was the play of senior guard guard Jairus Lyles. Lyles led the Retrievers with 28 points. He also added on three assists
In basketball, the National Championship game is the dream of every kid that plays basketball in college. NC State’s basketball team wasn’t well known in 1983. Jim Valvano was the coach and he knew he had a great group of kids. When they won the ACC tournament against the great Ralph Sampson and Virginia, people thought that the win was just luck and they probably wouldn’t make last when they got into the tournament. Throughout the tournament, NC State kept surviving and advancing. In Johnathan Hock’s documentary “Survive and Advance”, Hock uses stock footage of the games that were played during the tournament, different points of view from the players, and the sequence of the documentary to prove that NC State’s basketball team were the underdogs during the whole tournament; however they were able to win despite their adversity
One reason they will not make it without Terrell is because he was the primary scorer for the team and he was the guy that would hit clutch free throws at the end of games. According to the book, “Terrell averaged 28.9 points per game while shooting 47% along with a 92% free throw percentage” (Feinstein 306). Terrell was the only reason that the team could score as much as they could and he was clearly the superstar of the team. Aside from that, Terrell is also one of the best high school basketball players throughout the nation. In the book, it says, “His stats are the best out of the country and he is carrying the team to a great record with highlight plays” (Feinstein 294). Clearly, Terrell energizes the team to get better and he is leading by example so that others on the team can play like him. A final reason that they would not have won is because Terrell motivates other players to shoot more and he gives other players better shots off double teams. When Terrell was double teamed, he would “always find the open guy and hit them right on stride for the easy layup (Feinstein 332). Even though Terrell was not the best passer on the team, he was still able to rack up assists because he would find the open guy
In continuing her career, she made the Varsity team her Freshmen year and continued to play all four years. As a freshman she averaged 15 points per game and was named Freshmen of the year. As a sophomore, she averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds. As a Junior, Latoya averaged 22 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. She also led the team and the nation in scoring.
Jim Valvano, otherwise known as “Jimmy V”, was a college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. This paper will cover Jimmy and define his true leadership qualities. Jimmy was an icon in the sports world not only for his coaching ability. He taught the world that leaders need a vision, leaders need to connect with their followers, and that leaders learn from their followers. Jimmy defied the rules and transformed his players into exceptionally good players and even better people. He taught more than basketball to his players and reached outside of his coaching arena to touch the lives of people across the world.
The University of Dayton Men’s Basketball Program. There have been many historical moments with the University of Dayton Flyers Men’s Basketball team, but Mark Weaver recalls the one that meant most to him. It took place on March 24, 1967, in Louisville’s Freedom Hall for the Final Four of the NCAA (National College Athletic Association) tournament against the highly favored North Carolina Tar Heels (Collett 228). This was the third straight NCAA tournament appearance for the Flyers, but their first ever Final Four (Collett 228). It turned out that the Flyers smashed North Carolina, seventy-six to sixty-two.

...a hook shot, cut the deficit to four points with three minutes remaining and Pryor's free throw chopped it to 48-45.

There are 12240 students at Duke University, and every year 12 out of those 12240 are put on a mission. The expectations are far above the ground, these 12 men and their coaching staff are called the Duke University Blue Devils basketball team. Year after year their mission is to bring home an NCAA basketball national championship trophy. Three of 84 teams at Duke University have reached their goal by winning a national championship.
Entering my final season of AAU basketball I knew I had set myself up for a roller coaster of emotions, whether it was from the night of my first practice, the weekend of my first tournament, or my first time on the road with my new team. This was because a lot was on the line this season, and I strived to make this season my best, and most enjoyable. This is mostly because this was the final year getting the opportunity to put on my red and black jersey every tournament. It was my last season traveling around the country with my teammates every weekend with one goal, to win, and it was my last season to improve my skills all around, in an attempt to further my basketball career into college. During the first few practices I was nervous for how the season would go because I noticed my coach was a lot harder on me than he was to my teammates and I did not know how to take that at first.I was not used to to his coaching style of being loud, in your face, and tough, or his emphasis on "perfection" because on my past teams I was used to being the best person on the team, and my coach rarely had negative criticism for me, so I took his intense coaching style terribly.
...line and will do anything in their power to defeat their rival. These games help boost the popularity of the sport of college football. Over the years, the increasing television exposure of the games and social media have given the fans almost instant access to all things college football. This has helped the sport become more and more widespread. Hopefully, the many repeating themes of rivalry games will continue to impress and amaze the fans of the game and allow the game to grow even further. While many of these games have historical implications or are related geographically, many times it just simply comes down to that we don’t like them and they don’t like us. Nevertheless, there are some things that will always be the same. The past will be remembered, the teams will focus on making the most out of the present in hope of making more history making events.
Coaching style is only one of the factors that set Coach K apart from Coach Williams. In addition, Coach K’s offense and defense coaching style is higher ranked. Duke Basketball is known year after year for its outstanding defense. Coach K says, “A winning basketball team makes the opponent react to them, whether they are on offense or defense. Our philosophy is to attack on defense. Don’t be afraid of making a mental or physical mistake on defense. The only mistake you can make it not playing hard” (Coaching Basketball). At the end of the day all defense really comes down to is effort. Which team is going to “go the extra mile” and go after the loose balls, rebounds, and consistently encourage their teammates. The Blue Devils always have those
Pop Warner is a nonprofit organization that provides activities such as American football for children of the ages of 5-16. However, most youth usually play the sport when it’s offered in junior high or high school, limiting their knowledge of the sport itself. Therefore, youth from the ages of 5-12 should join Pop warner football, rather than wait till their early teenage years to play for the following reasons: To get more familiar/learn about the sport, learn how to run routes, and build up a football IQ.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have been presented the opportunity to include a jersey patch partnership with a business of their choosing. Jersey patch deals can’t just simply be sold, there needs to be a relationship between the brand and the team. The jersey patch provides a chance to further increase corporate partnerships, become more involved with a business in the community, and increase team revenue. The Oklahoma City Thunder have narrowed their candidates for the patch to Sonic Drive-In, Paycom, and Southwest Airlines. Out of these possible candidates, I believe Sonic Drive-In would best aligns with the Oklahoma City Thunder. A partnership between Sonic and the Thunder can be beneficial to both partners in their pursuit to community commitment and brand growth. I believe Sonic Drive-In is best for many reasons. First, their corporate headquarters are in Oklahoma City (just down the street from (Chesapeake Energy Arena) which would show they are committed to local business. Second, this could create more activation opportunity nationally, while staying committed to a locally-based company. Lastly, Sonic provides an opportunity to place a high bid for the patch since Sonic has large revenue stream, which could contribute as more revenue for
