Violent Video games and other media such as tv, movies, and music are very influential to children and teens. What children or teens view is what they act or what they go by. When they see a lot of it; it starts to become as a normal behavior or act for them. As they start to do the same as what they see they begin to see nothing wrong with what they’re doing. It’s as it was said before these players of violent video games lose empathy. Children exposed to violence at a young age have a high tendency of developing aggressive behavior than those who are not exposed. Most people that play violent video games can come across short-term effects and long-term effects as video games (2010) inform. The short term effects include learning how to aggress, an increase in aggressive behavior, thinking in an aggressive way, and increase in aggressive emotions. Media violence researchers do believe that the last three happen often very quickly. Now, how do they learn to be aggressive even if it’s wrong at the time? Well, what violent video games do is want you to comprehend that there’s an objective. For example, the characters in the game want to get somewhere or want something so they have to do whatever it takes to get what they want. That’s the concept that’s also understood when playing these games. So when a child or teen wants something they will do whatever it takes to get it and not in a positively
Children today are exposed to more graphic violence in video games compared to any past generations. This is because the media finds that making a profit, surpasses the lives of the adolescents that play these games. However, over time two sets of views formed from the violence in video games. James D. Sauer, is a graduate of the School of Physiology. In his article, “Violent Video Games: The Effects of Narrative Context and Reward Structure on In-Game and Postgame Aggression,” Sauer, describes how adolescents gain forms of aggression and violence after playing certain games.
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.
Media plays a vital role in the behavior of people. Many boys, teens, and adults play video games for hours everyday. This has an evident effect on the way they act. In The Mask You Live In, Dr. Philip Zimbardo explains, “The ones that are most addictive are the most violent where your job is to destroy the enemy. To dominate.” From the start of boyhood, boys are taught that it is acceptable to be violent. They think that aggression and domination are a normal way of life. No wonder why men can be so violent. This is normal to them. The media is extremely influential on the demeanor of people, especially young kids. Even more, Ashly Burch describes in the documentary that the typical character in a game is extremely violent. This influences the players in that they want to be like the character. This character is their role model and therefore influences boys to use force. For this reason, young boys should be taught be understanding and show kindness in place of violence and
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.
Since the time that video games have come out there has been many researches and experiments to publish their effects on the players of the games. Several psychosocial characteristics, such as hostility, anger, and being diagnosed with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or Asperger syndrome, are suggested to be related to violent video games. The ones that are getting harmed most by these games are the children and young teens. These Violent games affect children’s minds in many harmful ways. There has been a research that has shown that some violent video games can result in the mental disorder known as schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that makes it hard to tell the difference between what is real and what is not real. It also makes it hard to think clearly, have normal emotional responses and also act correctly in social situations. Video games make it difficult for younger kids to understand the difference in real life and the game. There was a boy who went to daycare, he was 8 years old and very into video games. One morning he shot his mother as she laid in her bed. After doing so he called his grandmother and told her “something is wrong with mommy she’s not get...
All of the sources for this essay contain findings from the experiments that deal with violent video games’ effects on adolescents. The first article, Gabrielle Unsworth’s The effect of playing violent video games on adolescents: Should parents be quaking in their boots?, concurs the types of effects of violent video games on adolescents’ aggression, and that these participants show the different levels of angers during the experiment. The second and third articles, Krcmar’s Retaliatory aggression and the effects of point of view and blood in violent video games and Nicholas Carnagey’s The Effects of Reward and Punishment in Violent Video Games on Aggressive Affect, Cognition, and Behavior, are related to each other since they both have similar results that violent video games increase adolescents’ aggressive cognitions. Have you ever wondered if violent video games can cause aggression in children? Thousands of children all over the world engage in violent video games for a large amount of time during their day. A study in the medical journal Pediatrics discusses how a group of 181 Japanese students from the ages 12 to 15, and 364 U.S. children from the ages 9 to 12 were tested in order to observe the effects of violent video games. It was recorded that the children who were more subjected to the violent video games were more aggressive than their complements who did not participate in the games. (Moeller) The children who played the games also ended up controlling numerous situations inadequately; this involves pushing or shoving for what they wanted, or yelling at each other. It is tolerable to have faith in that this is a standard stereotype for children at this age; however, children are becoming more and more out of control and belligerent. Research has also found that, controlling for prior aggression, children who played more violent video games during the beginning of the school year showed more aggression than other children later in the school year

The games that cause the most fear are ones that give the players the opportunity to select their own weapon and decide what violent adventures they long to experience. A well known fact is that repetition increases the learning process. For example, when students are studying for a test they will incorporate the use of flashcards. Using the flashcards exposes the child to the information repeatedly until it is memorized. While playing these games, the player learns the patterns of games through repetition. By doing this they are unconsciously learning to act in the same way as the game. In March of 2014, the Center for Study of Violence at Iowa State participated in a study where they followed over 3,000 children over a three year period who played video games. Since the experiment was carried out over a long period of time, it was easy to spot out the effect of the games on the test subjects. The report discovered that the boys who played the hostile games had an increased amount of recorded aggressive behaviors, and although the girls in the experiment played less violent games than the boys, they still displayed violent behaviors (Gentile, 2014).
