them. The movies where the main character is a perfect human is something we dream to be, not something to relate to. Having a character to relate to helps us get involved in the movie. Martin had a way of making the characters seem real, like they are actually part of society. Raging Bull featured an altogether different type of violence. With it being a boxing movie, the bone-jarring hits were designed for visual effect rather than a shock. We knew there was going to be violence in the movie, so to make it good, he had to make the violence look awesome and hardcore. Goodfellas is more down Scorsese's alley. It focused on the lavish lifestyle of those in organized crime. There was brutality and violence in this film because there had to be, …show more content…
2017). Close up Static shots in the beginning show that Ray Liotta is for sure the main character in the film. Then comes the narration, which makes the audience feel as if they are being spoken to directly. Not only does it makes the audience feel like they are being spoken to, but they feel like they are tracking the thoughts of a certain character. Such as when Henry and Jimmy are walking down the street, and JImmy asks “Do you think Morri tells his wife everything?” Henry replies with “Morrie, Him?” Right here is when the frame freezes and Henry does a voice over. There is also a freeze frame in The Wolf Of Wall Street, with the hectic image of Leonardo Decaprio in a crazy crowd of people. Now it is worth noting that that freeze frames themselves are not what make the scenes good. It is because of the smooth transitions into the next scene from the freeze frame that makes these scenes effective. Some movies try the freeze frame effect and it is nothing but corny, and it is usually annoying, but that is not the case with Scorsese's films. Freeze frames also get a bad reputation because some people claim that it is just a “cover up for lost footage.” The use of freeze frames is another reason why Martin Scorsese's is an Auteur, he makes it work. By speaking to his audience, he is able to create a relationship with them, which in turn keeps them more engaged and interested in the …show more content…
He is arguably the best Auteur in the film industry so far. His attention to detail, and obsession over perfection is what makes him great. He holds himself to such a high standard. Not only can he be considered a cinematic genius, but he knows how to get people to do what he wants. In film, having the vision is only half of the battle. The other half is much more difficult. Think about a group project for school. The quality of the end product is not all in your hands. It is also in the hands of your collaborators, and Martin Scorsese's is a master at getting what he wants out of his assistants. He has always had a love for movies, as he was often slumped up on a couch watching movies because his asthma restricted his activity. After earning his degree from New York University, he started making movies and his career soon took off. After that, he soon became an Auteur, as he put his unique stamp on each and every movie that he made. He is known for being very meticulous while making movies, and his movies often have a gritty violence to them, but in an artistic way. He makes his movies in such a creative and beautiful way, he makes everything look artistic. He is a master when it comes to violence, freeze frames, and other great camera angles. Having said all of the information and insight discussed, he is looked at by many people as the most important Auteur in film
The characters in these films were savvy, secretive and wealthy unlike the gangsters seen in Little Caesar and Scarface: The Shame of the Nation. Brian De Palma’s Scarface (1983) payed homage to the original, and although they follow roughly the same storyline, De Palma’s remake is more reminiscent of The Godfather films than its predecessor. Tony Montana (Al Pacino), the film’s main character, worked his way up from poverty by selling drugs and committing horrifying acts of violence in order to attain the power, wealth and woman he so desired. In his 1983 review of Scarface, Pulitzer prize winner, Roger Ebert states “Al Pacino does not make Montana into a sympathetic character, but he does make him into somebody we can identify with, in a horrified way, if only because of his perfectly understandable motivations” (RogerEbert.com). More than fifty years later, Ebert expresses similar thoughts to those of Robert Warshow, esteemed film critic and author of “The Gangster as a Tragic Hero.” “…We [the audience] gain the double satisfaction of participating vicariously in the gangster’s sadism and then seeing it turned against the gangster himself.” (Warshow) These sentiments are exactly what the censorship of the 1932 version intended to prevent, yet Scarface (1983) did not receive the same scrutiny. Despite the mixed reviews that Howard Hawk’s original Scarface: Shame of the Nation and Brian De Palma’s
Goodfellas is based on the life of Henry Hill, a member of an organized crime family of Italian descent that continues to have strong ties to Italy throughout the movie. As the movie begins, an old car drives down a highway as the bumper and New York license plates are shown. It seems as though the flickering streetlights are representative of the lights of a large city fading in the distance. Two men watch as a short man makes the observation that they need to finish killing a mutilated and bloody guy in the the trunk. Tommy, the short guy, stabs the man with a butcher knife mercilessly in a way that would make most viewers cringe. It becomes clear that this is a movie about street level gangsters in the ‘70s. The protagonist, Henry Hill begins by narrating his life as a teenager, stating that he “always wanted to be a gangster.”
What could be a better summer box office hit than a film about women hitting the road, rebelling against society and undergoing a complete metamorphosis in the process? On the surface, Thelma and Louise comes across as a typical chick flick; yet, its a movie that takes on many lifeforms and interpretations. The most fascinating criticism of the movie is whether or not Thelma and Louise go insane. Thelma and Louise's actions govern the central ideas of the movie: Freedom, women vs men, and an internal metamorphosis precipitated by the open road. These overarching themes offer justification for the women's behavior, thoughts and beliefs and answers the three main questions that offer insight into whether the women go mad: Are the two violent because of their experiences, or are they simply on a “man-hating” journey? Do Thelma and Louise have boundaries? Why did the two drive off the cliff? As the answers to these questions are divulged as the movie progresses, Thelma and Louise become symbols of strong, driven, sane women who discover themselves by removing domineering men from their lives and women who create their own destines.
Grand Theft Auto 5 is a game that was released in 2013 by Rockstar games. It was one of the most popular games released that year. While it is recognised in advertising that sex sells, in the world of video games it is violence that sells. The violent themes of Grand Theft Auto 5 include assaults, killings and torture and these are made realistic by the flawless graphics. Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most controversial games to have ever been released because even though it has a rating classification of R18+ it makes its way into the hands of many younger players via parents, siblings or friends. There are serious concerns that exposure to these violent themes will have effects on developing brains. Grand Theft Auto 5 and games like it actually cause violent behaviour, desensitises users to acts of violence, it causes some users to view the world as a scary and violent place and possibly most concerning is the fact that exposure to violence in games gives users the appetite for viewing further violence.
Think about your favorite movie. When watching that movie, was there anything about the style of the movie that makes it your favorite? Have you ever thought about why that movie is just so darn good? The answer is because of the the Auteur. An Auteur is the artists behind the movie. They have and individual style and control over all elements of production, which make their movies exclusively unique. If you could put a finger on who the director of a movie is without even seeing the whole film, then the person that made the movie is most likely an auteur director. They have a unique stamp on each of their movies. This essay will be covering Martin Scorsese, you will soon find out that he is one of the best auteur directors in the film industry. This paper will include, but is not limited to two of his movies, Good Fellas, and The Wolf of Wall Street. We will also cover the details on what makes Martin Scorsese's movies unique, such as the common themes, recurring motifs, and filming practices found in their work. Then on
When the news reports a shooting, I start to panic and worry for the victims involved. I don’t typically start to wonder about how long the shooter was active and for how many minutes, so when reading the FBI Active Shooter report I was shocked to have found out most shooting happen within minutes. The report states “In 64 incidents where the duration of the incidents could be ascertained, 44 (69.0%) of 64 incidents ended in 5 minutes or less, with 23 ending in 2 minutes or less.” Leaving many civilians in dangerous situations because by the time a law enforcement officers arrives the shooting will stereotypically be over. I find this fact very unsettling because civilians rely on law enforcement officers to keep them safe, but not even law

The Kite Runner addresses the grim reality faced by children in Afghanistan. Ongoing violence has resulted in many cases of death in children or their parents, turning the children into orphans. The Encyclopedia of Children and Childhood observes that the size of orphan populations is affected by societal marriage practices, as well as environmental concerns such as war, famine, or epidemics (Brunet). Violence has greatly lowered the quality of life for children in Afghanistan, especially in regards to healthcare and education. The country has an extensive number of child victims each year due to the constant fighting. Hosseini includes this tragic aspect of life “[Farid] lost his two youngest girls a few years earlier in a land mine blast just outside Jalalabad, the same explosion that had severed toes from his feet and three fingers from his left hand” (Hosseini 230). Such conditions described in The Kite Runner continue in modern Afghanistan. When children in the actual Kabul Orphanage were interviewed, sixteen year-old Nurullah said “Conditions are not at all good
After Scorsese’s father asking him a question about a character, a young Martin raised his fingers to make an impression of him shooting a gun. This image is one of the most memorable images in Scorsese’s film Taxi Driver, where we see Robert De Niro repeating the same image pointing to his temples. This image is shown at the height of the film. When Scorsese got a television at home, no more did he have to leave his house to engross himself in the most recent movie best seller. Already we can see Scorsese’s love of filmmaking from an extremely young
The force of reality that plays a factor on a person is what drives decisions that are ultimately made and the results that follow. Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan are films in which genres play a big role in what is directed, but the things that make the film so valuable to the eye are the stories being told, how those stories are shot, and the performances by the actors and actresses that give us the sense of reality and surrealism.
The movie “Good Fellas” is the ideal definition of what the Italian mob use to look like and the operations of organized crime. The movie is based upon a true story and portrayed the daily lifestyles of what we perceive real gangsters to have lived. There are various myths and stories of what actually went on during the early Mafia days with organized crime, but this movie does an excellent job at exemplifying what we believe to have happened. The mafia family portrayed in the movie was filled with both Sicilians and Irish men; the Sicilians were the only members who could be “made”.
Patriotism is a complex and complicated concept. Sure we all feel that inexplicable love for our land. The same love motivates us to fight until our last breath to whoever attacks her, but who dictates which is the best way to defend ones country? How should a person show his devotion and unconditional support to his motherland? What would happen if ones way is not the same as that of others? The most important thing for me is being true to ourselves; fighting for whatever it is we believe is correct. No matter how different our opinions can be regarding the defense of our country, no one should have the right to impose their way using violence. As we saw in the documentary “Two Days in October,” police should not have treated students who were passively protesting like criminals.
The setting of “ Lord of the Flies “ is important because it takes Ralph, Piggy, and the other boys in that island outside of the very society of which the novel critiques. Only by taking the boys from the imperfect society and placing them in a paradise, like the biblical Eden, can the author assert that such flaws as violence and intolerance are natural, not societally born; however, this does not explain the evidence that they can be and often are societally influenced. The boys had still been raised for several years in that society, and by different parents with certain positive attributes and also imperfections. In order to truly prove the natural quality of violence in them, they would have to be untouched by society from birth, which
Martin Scorsese had many favorite filmmakers but the most influential upon him were Satyajit Ray, Ingmar Bergman, Michelangeo Antonioni, and Federico Fellini. Black Narcissus was a film that greatly inspired Martin and he implemented many of their unique techniques into his filmmaking.
The use of violence within literature typically causes much dispute and controversy, and critics often accuse authors of romanticizing such atrocities, and Anthony Burgess’s A Clockwork Orange was not spared of any criticism that often claimed that his work further desensitized an entire generation from the brutality of violence. This infamous novel takes place in a bleak, totalitarian society, and the protagonist Alex often spends his nights committing ‘ultra-violence’ with his droogs, and is eventually arrested for murder, and forced to deal with constant dehumanization by the State, as a result of his aversion therapy through the Ludovico Technique. This classical conditioning was an act of violence that the government attempted to use to
