Violence in the family unit is not new to mankind. As far back as history goes, there has been violence within the families. Cultures of all kinds tell the people what is acceptable and what is not, within the society’s guidelines. All around the world there is violence of different variations. Abuse has long lasting effects on the victim and the world. Violence is the act of committing harm to another person physically, sexually or psychologically, (Gosselin 2013). The victims of violence in history have often been women and children. It has not been limited to just women and children but violence within the family unit is likely abuse of the women and children. It still continues but the view in society is that it is wrong. The laws in place are to protect the victim from the abuser. There are many different programs to help the abused women and children to get the support and have their needs met when leaving a household of violence. Programs like women’s shelters in large cities do not allow males. The women’s shelters have the needs to provide a safe environment, at least for a few hours or days, in order to get the help that the women and children need. Domestic violence laws are harsh and are stronger against the abuse of children. The issue is getting the women to file charges against the abuser. Often in domestic violence situations, the female believes that she deserves the abuse or that she cannot survive on her own with the abuser. While this is not true, it is often the female’s reality. Filing charges against the abuser would cut the ties that are needed in her mind. Education of what help can be given and that the situation of abuse is not acceptable, is what helps these women to have the strength to leave an abusive …show more content…

Physical abuse is often the most seen violence of a person but there is also sexual, psychological, and neglect. Sexual abuse can be classified as sexual assault, incest, molestation of minors, and other variations of sexual abuse. The effects of sexual abuse can last years beyond the actual event or events. The psychological part of sexual abuse can take years of healing. But even with healing, it is never forgotten. Psychological abuse is not limited to the sexual parts. Being psychologically abused in all forms is dangerous to the victim. A person’s self-worth is questioned, which can lead to suicide. Psychological abuse has lasting side effects that can continue through generations of children. Neglect is a type of abuse that is seen a lot in children. Parents will not want the child and that child becomes a problem, not a joy. Feeding and caring for another person is selfless and often in neglect situations, basic human needs like food and water are not given to the child. The child can be abandoned and leave to die, locked in a room and provide only minimal amounts of food and water, or leaving a child at home for hours or days at a time to fend for themselves.
