Some of the people in school shootings are underage or they steal a parent’s weapon. They still have access to these things. In schools, the topics of bullying, drugs, and alcohol are addressed like in programs like D.A.R.E. However, I think it would beneficial to introduce lessons on violence and examining how it can escalate quickly and how school shootings can occur. I think students should get educated about how students truly impact one another and if any one of their friends says something as a joke they should not be taken lightly. In addition, I think it would be beneficial to practice drills on what to do if a school shooting occurred. Schools practice fire drills, intruder drills, hurricane, tornado, but not a shooting drill. I think it would be scary for some people to go through a school shooting drill and I do not think they would really fell comfortable in doing so but to have that would help in preparing student and teachers in what to do incase it occurred. Sometimes the shooter is a student, sometimes it is more than one or it could even be an outside source that is no longer a student or someone who just has an issue. I

...e can finally put some of the missing puzzle pieces together. Such as the motives Adam Lanza had for the shootings, and why he targeted children. Also with a little knowledge about how school shootings/violence is increasing every day. We can see how most of these shootings are always relating about the same motives, bulling. Understanding the characteristics of the shooters and the causes of most school violence/shootings can help us look for signs and hopefully stop the tragedy before it happens. As a future teacher, I know what kind of signs to look for in my students or people in general to help them before an event like the Sandy Hook happens again. Hopefully the government will come to a complete choice about gun laws and we can start to see some kind of different on their end. However, this issue needs to be focused more on for us to start seeing a decrease.
School shootings are some of the most horrific incidents that can take a community by storm. It can be hard to fathom how children can be capable of such horrible acts, such as killing their fellow classmates. Many people have tried to come up with explanations on how these terrible acts have occurred. These explanations have ranged to biological factors to how the way our society views violence. In this essay I will explain how some theories could explain these events and how they can help deter it from happening again.
This essay is going to talk about one of the deadliest school shootings that killed 13 students and injured several. On April 20, 1999 two teens went on a shooting spree killing 13 and wounded several more before turning the guns on to them killing themselves. The columbine shooting one of the worst shootings in U.S history raised a debate on the gun control and school safety. The United States will not soon forget the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut that came just two weeks before Christmas last year. This tragic event resulted in the death of twenty students and eight adults. Although the event shocked the nation, rampage shootings are nothing new. Over the years, many families have lost loved ones to these horrific events. As a result, these mass shootings such as the one that occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary caught public attention leading to a push to find the cause of these events. Out of this research a variety of possible causes came to light consisting of arguments stating that high school bullying, availability of guns, mental illness, violent movies and video games are the cause of mass shootings. However, these researchers and debaters tend to ignore the role of massive media coverage in the increase of copycat shootings in the United States.
As the world recovers from recent school shootings, people wondered why these events have occurred. They are focused on drug use, violent society, video games, bullying, and mental issues to try and explain an unexplainable event. The idea that a person would shoot others for little or no reason gave little relief to the survivors.
It is a sad time in American history when one can easily recount recent school shootings in their own area. This ease stems from a sharp increase in the number of firearms brought into elementary and middle schools across the country, with an intense focus on the issue beginning after the shooting of 20 children from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut. Most school shooters are male, white, and often upper middle class. They are also more, often than not, under some type of mental stress that is causing them to create this type of violence in our communities. In fact, many school shooters are never suspected of doing any harm to their peers and teachers until it is much too late.
The topic ‘Teachers should be armed” interest me so much because I have met a teacher who dealt with a school shooting and he truly believed if teachers were armed the shooting would have never occurred There have been so many cases of shooting inside of schools, innocent people getting hurt and students and even staff members not feeling safe in school. I myself have met a person who had to deal with a deadly tragedy of a shooting inside of Columbine High School watching his own students’ lives end because of 2 boys who thought taking ones live can make theirs better. This changed his whole perspective on why a teacher should be armed ‘’If teachers were armed April 20, 1999 this would have never happened”, he said. This teacher told me if he was armed that day he could have saved students’ lives because he felt helpless when the shooting happened and there was nothing to do about it. Cases like these teachers should be prepared with a weapon in handy. Having teachers armed will lower the risk of school shootings.
There have been many horror stories in the news about mass shootings at schools. The public, and even the president of the United States, is asking if anything can be done to prevent these tragedies. There are many theories on why students kill their peers at schools; these range from increased violence in video games and movies to bullying troubles at school. Almost always, the perpetrator suffers from some form of mental illness (Khadaroo). Because of this, motives for these crimes are extremely difficult to discern. Although the theories for the causes of this dilemma are tenuous at best, the effects are very perceptible. Can anything be done to prevent these massacres? School shootings are a complex problem that cannot always be prevented, but there are a number of actions we can take to reduce the frequency and extent of the damage caused. These actions include placing more restrictions on firearms, creating detection programs for shooters, hiring more counselors for unstable students, and placing guards or police in schools. School shootings are a serious problem, and a solution is needed in order to prevent these calamities.
From 1980’s till now, there are has been many school shootings. Many researchers have made many hypotheses as to why these occur. The most tragic shooting took place in Sandy Hook Elementary. 2. I believe that we should prevent shootings from happening in schools because schools are meant to be a safe education environment for students and faculty. Mr. Fox stated that these kids typically just don’t feel good about themselves. He blames the recent spate of school violence on the media and instant popularity arising from intense news coverage after the violence which encouraged a surge of “copycats”. He also discusses the role of violence seen in today’s movies, MTV and video games. Ignoring the warning signs of potential explosive juveniles was also sighted as a reason for this surge in school shootings.
Two students killed and thirteen others left wounded, six schoolmates shot by fellow classmate, 13 people dead and 23 wounded in a High School, Four girls and a teacher are shot to death and 10 people wounded during a false alarm in school…Those were the headlines of all newspapers at one time or another. High School shootings have been occurring throughout the United States. Why is it that a student would come into their school and open fire? Why is it that no one notices the signs before the incident? How is it possible that they were able to bring the firearm into the school? Those are some questions people need answers to, especially those concerned with what will happen next.
There are many different types of school violence. The one that gets the most public attention is school shootings. The term school shooting is basically defined as an act where a student, school staff member, or intruder from the outside commits an act on the school campus. One of the most well known school shootings took place at Columbine High School near Littleton, Colorado. On a Tuesday April 20,1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, students at Columbine High School, took the lives of thirteen other students before taking the lives of their own. When we think of events like this, we have many questions that go through our mind. Thoughts like why did this happen, could it have been prevented, and how did impact the individuals involved just to name a few. There are probably several more thoughts that go through the minds of a nation when we hear about traumatic evens such as a school shooting.
School shootings have been a part of America’s history since 1700’s when four Lenape Indians went into a school in Greencastle, Pa., and killed the teacher and up to as many as 10 children (Epstein, 2012). Since that day school shootings have become almost a regular occurrence. This school year alone, we have already reached eleven shootings (Hefling, 2014). Perhaps, an even more stunning number, since the Sandy Hook shooting in December 2012, just fourteen months ago, America has had an appalling 44 school shootings, totaling a horrific 28 deaths, in just fourteen months (Dimon, 2014). Since that day in December, about 1,500 state gun...
“That could never happen in my school.” This is one of the first thoughts that goes through a students mind when they hear about a school shooting. The fact is though, it can. The major issue lies in the low morality of students and warning signs overlooked by administration.
