Vinny and Joe-Boy are both characters in a story called ‘’The Ravine’’. They are 15, boys, and best friends from Hawaii. They are going to a ravine to swim and jump off a precipice were a boy named Butchie died one week and a day ago. Vinny and Joe-Boy are in many ways similar, yet they are still very different. Vinny was weak, just letting everyone make his decisions for him. His friends wanted him to go to the ravine, but he didn’t want to. He didn’t know what to do. His mom said he couldn’t go to the ravine but his dad said he could. He didn’t want his friends to think he was scared or a big baby. So he went. Vinny was afraid, if his mom ever found out that he went, he would have wished he was never born! I think he is afraid …show more content…
Joe-Boy jumped from a fifty foot precipice, he said ‘’watch how a man does it’’ to Vinny. Joe-Boy didn’t even worry about what might happen. That would have to take some real guts because I know I would never have be able it. Even though he is brave, he can be a real bully to Vinny. Joe-Boy was saying that Vinny was going to swim down and touch the dead boys face. That is so disgusting and mean. That is all that I have to say about Joe-Boy. These are some similarities about the two. Both Vinny and Joe-Boy are boys. In the story, it refers to Starlene as Joe-Boy’s girlfriend and it refers to everyone else as a boy. The story doesn’t say they are boys but that’s what I can assume. Joe-Boy and Vinny are Hawaiian. Again, the story says that Starlene is the only haole. Now both Vinny and Joe-Boy went up the trail. Vinny didn’t jump, he just went up the trail. It’s just Joe-Boy that jumped from the precipice. Vinny is scared at first, but at the end he is brave. Joe-Boy is brave through the whole thing, but they are still similar and in many ways. Vinny is a coward, he can be very easily persuaded. Joe-Boy is brave and a bully. Even though Joe-Boy isn’t the nicest and Vinny doesn’t care for it, they are still best friends. Although Joe-Boy was controlling at the beginning, Vinny finds that standing up to his friends brings him

Through the character of Joe, Gary Crew demonstrates the themes of conflict and peace faced through racial discrimination, racism and social exclusion. Joe Carney is represented as a black Aboriginal teenager who left his country town to come down and take an apprenticeship in the city, as white people would describe him as a mixed blood. He had experienced many hardships throughout his life such as being discriminated against and bullied at Wolanga Primary School by his fellow classmates and his teacher. Joe quotes “I had been pushed, chased, punched… My shirt ...
The boys had to overcome hardships. From family issues to financial problems, the boys had to overcome many hard times. On page forty-three paragraph four and paragraph seven is where Joe Rantz is left by his family, “Thula wants you to stay here. We’re going to Seattle now. In chapter one we are introduced to our narrator, Ponyboy. Ponyboy is raised by his two older brothers Darry and Soda. They’re all apart of a gang called the “greasers” which is joined by Dally, Johnny, Two-bit, and Steve. There is another group called “ socs” which stands for socials, and everyone in that group is very wealthy. One day Ponyboy got jumped by a socs group, but luckily Darry was there to help before anything too serious happened. The first element of literature is characterization. Ponyboy is a keen observer, trying to make sense of the complexities of those around him. At the beginning of the story, he stops and spends several pages giving us brief character description on Steve, Two-Bit, Dally, and Johnny. This is also known as direct characterization. He tells us that Steve is "cocky and smart" ( Hinton 9). Two-Bit can 't stop joking around and goes to school for "kicks" (Hinton 10) rather than to learn. Dallas, he says, is "tougher, colder, meaner" ( Hinton 10) than the rest of them.
Throughout the film there are two main characters. These two characters are Irish brothers that share a deep sense of their Catholic religion. Their names are Murphy and Connor McManus. Murphy and Connor are two normal men who are put in an extraordinary situation. Connor risks his own life to save the life of his brother. The situation starts out with a bar fight with two Russian mafia members. The Russians lose the fight with the two brothers; the next morning they come after the McManus brothers for revenge. Murphy and Connor kill the two men in self defense and go to the police station. While in the holding cell, they are given a message from a “spiritual force” to rid the world of evil men. The two brothers mutter “kill all that is evil, so all that is good may flourish”(The Boondock Saints) From that moment they devote themselves to a battle between good and evil. Another important character is David Della Rocco, also known as the “Funny Man” or just Rocco. Rocco is a package boy for the Yakaveta family which is involved in the Italian mafia. The head of the Yakaveta family is “Papa” Joe Yakaveta. Papa sets up Rocco in a situation to have him killed; Rocco finds out about papa's plans and decides to join forces with Murphy and Connor in killing evil people. The killings are mainly focused towards men with mafia affiliations. So Rocco tells the McManus brothers who to ki...
Ponyboy and Johnny met up with Dally under a streetlight. They all went to buy Cokes. They ended up stealing some Kools as well. He was afraid in the story because when Ponyboy got jumped by the Socs at the park he was getting his head drowned he was afraid he was gonna die so he pulled out his knife he always carries with him and stabbed Bob right in the head who is part of the Socs. Johnny is a good friend by doing that because if he would of had stabbed Bob Ponyboy would have probably died but he was also afraid because he was scared he was gonna die or get really hurt. “ Johnny never walked by himself after that and always had the knife with him.” (2) Hinton.
